1995 Chevy G30 5.7L V8 Gas - Overdrive Ratio Error (Code 68) and Related Transmission Codes

Model: 1995 Chevy G30 Fault Code: P0733 Posted: 2015-08-29 10:18

My 1995 Chevrolet G30 with a 5.7L V8 gasoline engine has been sitting idle for an extended period. Prior to storage, it operated normally with no transmission issues—specifically, the 4L80E transmission functioned properly. After restarting the vehicle and driving it again, I noticed that it unexpectedly drops out of overdrive at highway speeds and shifts into second gear (entering limp mode). This behavior persists until the engine is turned off and restarted, after which the vehicle returns to normal operation. The onboard diagnostic system is displaying a Code 68: Overdrive Ratio Error. While I’ve found this code through research, I’m unsure what it means or how to resolve it. There’s no noticeable slippage, grinding, or thuds—only a sudden shift into second gear while cruising at highway speeds. Can anyone explain the significance of this error and recommend steps for diagnosis and repair? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. - Lew

After further investigation (though I'm not a transmission specialist), my research revealed several additional diagnostic codes in addition to the original Code 68 (Overdrive Ratio Error). The vehicle is also showing Codes 73 (Pressure Control Solenoid Fault), 74 (Transmission Input Speed Sensor Error), 或 86 (Low Ratio Error) and 87 (High Ratio Error). This combination of errors seems unusual. Could these be related to the 1-2A or 2-3B solenoids? Are any of these codes indicating a potential failure in the transmission's gear ratio sensing system, possibly due to sensor malfunctions or internal mechanical wear? I'm looking for expert insight on how to interpret this set of errors and what repairs might be necessary.
