1991 Buick Century Engine Dies Suddenly with Trouble Code 62 and 72: Transaxle Gear Switch Issue

Model: 1991 Buick Century Fault Code: P0620 Posted: 2016-04-09 22:43

My 1991 Buick Century is running fine while driving on the highway, but suddenly died while in motion. The vehicle now shows no spark and has trouble code 62 (Transaxle Gear Position Switch Circuit Fault). It also displays code 72, though I only expected codes up to 66. I'm wondering if this gear switch issue is directly related to the engine not starting or losing fire. Could the transaxle sensor be causing a loss of ignition or fuel delivery? Any insight into whether this fault affects engine startability would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect a 3.3L V6 engine—providing the 8th character of your VIN will help confirm the exact engine configuration. Also, check for spark at multiple plugs to rule out ignition system failure.

Check for spark at several plugs. Inspect the distributor cap and rotor—look for damage, corrosion, or carbon tracking. Ensure the rotor spins when cranking. If you're comfortable with it, use a digital multimeter (DVOM) to verify system voltages and ground connections. Start with a KOEO test: is there 12 volts at the ignition coil?
