P0496 Fault Diagnosis and Fuel Start Issue on 2008 Saturn Vue XE 3.6L

Hello, I own a 2008 Saturn Vue XE with a 3.6L engine and am currently experiencing the OBD2 diagnostic code P0496. I've already replaced the evaporative (EVAP) vent solenoid and performed a vacuum test by disconnecting both the power connector and vacuum line — no suction was detected, indicating the solenoid is functioning properly. Despite this, the P0496 code persists. I’ve been told that the fuel tank pressure sensor might be at fault. Has anyone else experienced this issue on their 2008 Saturn Vue? Additionally, when refueling, the vehicle will not start — I must floor the accelerator several times before it starts. Could the problem stem from a faulty purge valve or vent solenoid? Or is it more likely related to the fuel tank pressure sensor detecting abnormal vacuum flow during non-commanded purges?

Did you replace either the purge valve (on the engine) or the vent valve (on the canister)? When refueling, the car fails to start — this is a known symptom. Please confirm: 1) Does your vehicle frequently experience dual pump kick-off during refueling? 2) Do you ever 'top off' fuel when filling up? The fuel tank pressure sensor acts as a key indicator — it detects unexpected vacuum flow during non-commanded purge events.

I replaced the canister purge valve and removed the entire EVAP system to clean out dust from the filter element. The issue persisted after cleaning.

No matter how much fuel I add — whether a quarter tank or full — I always have to floor the gas pedal several times before the engine starts.

Clarification: The vent valve is located on the canister, while the purge valve is mounted on the engine. These are two separate components. Since P0496 relates to non-commanded purge events, it's essential to distinguish between these valves and address the correct one.

When I first noticed the issue, multiple codes appeared. I replaced the engine-side purge valve (purchased from O'Reilly Auto Parts), reset the MIL, and drove about 50–100 miles — the code returned. The next code was P0469, which led me to replace a canister-mounted vent solenoid. After resetting, the light came back on again with P0469. At that point, I gave up and decided to sell the vehicle. Now I'm trying to fix it — but I have no choice but to get it right this time.

This is why I’m researching forums — could a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor be responsible for triggering P0496? Is that a plausible cause?

P0469 indicates a circuit fault, while P0496 points to a non-commanded purge event. I suspect the control wire of the purge valve may be shorted to ground — this could trigger both codes. Can you use a wiring diagram and digital multimeter (DVOM) to test for continuity or shorts? If so, we can reference specific diagrams together.

Refer to wiring diagram #13, circuit 428: check the D-GN/WH wire for shorts to ground. Try gently tugging or shaking the harness to simulate road vibrations and operating conditions. Measure resistance from purge valve to PCM — if there’s a short to ground, both P0496 and P0449 may be triggered. I’ve inspected the wiring under the car — connections appear secure and not loose. However, the wire runs over the fuel tank, making it difficult to trace or test directly at this time.

Just checked my MIL — now I’m seeing both P0496 and P0449 (vent solenoid fault). This suggests a possible wiring issue affecting multiple components.
