2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi P2098 and P2096 Codes: Causes and Fixes Aftermarket Upgrades

Hi everyone, I'm looking for help with my 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi. Since day one of ownership, I've been experiencing persistent P2098 and P2096 diagnostic trouble codes. I've already replaced all O2 sensors, installed a new wiring harness, changed spark plugs, repaired vacuum leaks, and had the truck professionally tuned due to significant aftermarket modifications. The issue is that after any maintenance or repair, the check engine light turns off but returns within 50 miles of driving. The truck runs smoothly under normal conditions, but during heavy traffic, the engine overheats. I've also installed larger injectors, long-tube headers, an X-pipe with catalytic converters, a cold air intake, and a larger throttle body—plus a 180°F thermostat. Despite these upgrades and extensive work, the P2096 (Bank 1 Lean) and P2098 (Bank 2 Lean) codes keep reappearing. I'm concerned about whether the modifications are interfering with emissions control or sensor readings. Any insights into what could be causing this recurring issue? Is a remap or recalibration needed for these aftermarket parts?

First potential cause: your aftermarket engine upgrades. Consider reaching out to the manufacturers of your modifications—many offer online technical support. Stock components are recommended for street-driven vehicles. For off-road or high-performance use, a bi-directional ECU scanner is essential. A remap or reprogramming of the ECU may be necessary to ensure compatibility and proper sensor feedback.

I purchased this truck from a dealership and had it tuned by a professional using a power tuner. It runs exceptionally well—no drivability issues—except that the engine gets hot when idling in traffic. Originally, I saw both Bank 1 and Bank 2 lean codes. Could there be an issue with airflow or temperature sensing due to the modifications? Any thoughts on how to diagnose this specifically?

Has anyone else experienced similar P2096/P2098 issues after installing aftermarket headers, cold air intakes, and larger injectors on a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi? Any known fixes or diagnostic steps?
