2006 Mazda 3 P0446 Code Appears Only When Idling at Low RPMs

Model: 06 Mazda 3 Fault Code: P0446 Posted: 2017-04-29 07:34

I've noticed that my 2006 Mazda 3 consistently triggers the P0446 OBD2 diagnostic code when idling for five minutes or more, typically at normal idle RPMs. The issue only appears during prolonged idling—whether in park or neutral—and I can predict it will show up after a specific duration. Currently, it's listed as a pending code and has never transitioned to an active fault. I'd like to resolve this completely so my car runs without any error codes. An update: I recently installed a Short Ram Intake, which seems to affect idle behavior. The vehicle now tends to hold idle RPMs around 1000 instead of the normal range. Interestingly, when idling at or above 1000 RPM, the P0446 code does not appear—suggesting that the issue may be related to airflow or sensor readings during low-RPM operation. I'm looking for any insights into what could be causing this specific behavior and how to diagnose it effectively.

https://www.obd-codes.com/p044-6\nThe term 'CIRCUIT' in the P0446 code suggests a possible issue with the valve control wiring—check fuses, connectors, and resistance of the solenoid. For Mazda models, note that the LDP (Lift Valve Device) is likely responsible for the valve operation. A proper wiring diagram and test light are essential to verify continuity and identify any faults in this system.
