2006 Jeep Wrangler P0462 Fuel Level Sensor Issue: Diagnosis and Wiring Troubleshooting
Hello, I'm experiencing a recurring P0462 fault code on my 2006 Jeep Wrangler. The fuel gauge intermittently shows 'full' or 'empty,' sometimes fluctuating between the two, and occasionally the float arm appears to move erratically. I've used my OBD2 scanner to clear the code twice, and during both instances, the gauge functioned correctly for about 30 minutes. However, after restarting the vehicle, the fault returns every time. The fuel tank must be dropped to access the sending unit — a process I'd prefer to avoid unless absolutely necessary. My concern is whether there's a simpler solution before committing to tank removal. Could this be related to wiring damage, loose connections, or an electrical interference issue? Given that my Jeep is frequently used off-road, I suspect possible wire abrasion or pinching. Any insights into diagnosing the P0462 without dropping the fuel tank would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill Fleming
Have you replaced the fuel pump? Non-OEM or DIY pumps can cause intermittent issues. Always consider using an OEM unit. A wiring fault is likely — especially in off-road vehicles where wires may be pinched, frayed, or damaged from rough terrain. Check any visible sections of the harness for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion.
