2006 Chevrolet Impala P0011 Code: Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced Fix & Cost Guide

Model: 06 impala Fault Code: P0011 Posted: 2014-02-23 18:24

I own a 2006 Chevrolet Impala that failed emissions testing due to the P0011 diagnostic trouble code. The code indicates 'Camshaft Position-Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance Issue (Bank 1)'. I'm not familiar with what this means technically, nor do I know how to diagnose or repair it—nor what the typical repair cost might be. Can anyone provide detailed information on what causes this issue and step-by-step troubleshooting procedures? Additionally, could you share an estimate of labor and parts costs for fixing the P0011 problem in a 2006 Impala? Thanks in advance for any help.

This is likely a 3.9L V6 engine with a hybrid setup—combining an older valley-mounted single camshaft and modern Variable Cam Timing (VCT) system. The VCT uses oil pressure to adjust camshaft timing. Start by checking oil pressure and level, as low oil can cause improper timing operation. The sensor is located on the front of the cylinder head block, centered directly above the 12 o'clock position of the cam drive gear. Inspect all wiring connections for tightness, damage, or corrosion. Also check the VCT solenoid, which is positioned on the timing cover between the two idler gears—directly in front of the camshaft gear. Ensure the harness there is secure and free from damage; a worn serpentine belt may also pull on wiring and cause intermittent faults. If you need further clarification or diagrams, feel free to ask.
