P0016 Fault in 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 4.3L Engine: Diagnosis and Fix

Model: 05 Silverado 4.3 Fault Code: P0016 Posted: 2017-05-01 15:26

I have replaced both the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors on my 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 4.3L engine. The truck runs smoothly and performs well, but the check engine light remains on, preventing me from passing emissions testing. Despite these replacements, the P0016 code persists. I'm looking for help identifying potential root causes that could be causing this issue even after sensor replacement.

Are there any additional diagnostic trouble codes present? This is likely a timing correlation or offset issue — the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors are not agreeing on Top Dead Center (TDC). This is commonly referred to as 'sync' in engine diagnostics. Your OBD2 scanner can display the degree of misalignment. Some background information may be helpful: - Have you removed the distributor? - Did you attempt to set timing by manually adjusting the distributor? Potential causes include: - A loose or missing distributor hold-down bolt - A loose camshaft position (CMP) sensor causing signal variance - An incorrectly installed distributor — even one tooth off in advance or retard positions - A loose rotor on the distributor shaft - Excessive free play in the timing chain and gear assembly For a visual guide, check this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qidf5Jy-7II
