My wife's 2005 PT Cruiser has been sitting for a week after a camping trip. When we tried to start it, the car won't crank properly despite showing a P0301 diagnostic code. The engine cranks over smoothly and battery voltage reads at 12.4 volts—indicating power is present—but it seems like only one cylinder is firing. The vehicle has 80,000 miles on it. I'm wondering if the fuel pressure should be around 35-45 psi for this model, or if there could be a timing belt issue due to the cold weather and extended idle time. Since the car was left unattended during a rainy period at home, I suspect moisture might have affected components like spark plug wires. I found the root cause: during our vacation, it rained at home. The car had old original spark plug wires that absorbed moisture in cold weather and rain. This led to a cross-fire effect, causing misfires and triggering the P0301 code. After being towed to the shop and exposed to dry conditions without rain, the wires dried out and the engine started normally. A strange but plausible explanation.

Did it actually rain or flood during that week? If so, moisture exposure could be a key factor. Also, ensure diagnostic codes were checked when the car was at the shop—some issues may not show up until conditions change.
