2005 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L P0016 Code: Cam & Crank Sensor Sync Issue and Stutter at 350-4000 RPM
My 2005 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0L engine and automatic transmission is displaying the P0016 diagnostic trouble code. The code indicates a mismatch between the camshaft position (Cam Pos.) and crankshaft position (Crank Pos.) sensors. I've already replaced both sensors as well as all four oxygen (O2) sensors, but the P0016 code persists. Additionally, when driving above 3500 RPM, the vehicle stutters noticeably—almost like it's hitting a rev limiter. This behavior is concerning and has not been resolved by standard sensor replacements. I'm seeking advice on how to properly diagnose and fix this issue. Any insights or solutions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
The P0016 code specifically indicates a timing mismatch between the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, not necessarily that the sensors themselves are faulty. Did you replace only the individual cam sensor or the entire drive assembly containing the cam sensor? Have you attempted rotating the drive assembly to manually adjust the timing alignment?
