2005 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L P0016 Code: Cam & Crank Sensor Sync Issue and Stutter at 350-4000 RPM

Model: 05 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L Fault Code: P0016 Posted: 2008-11-15 22:32

My 2005 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0L engine and automatic transmission is displaying the P0016 diagnostic trouble code. The code indicates a mismatch between the camshaft position (Cam Pos.) and crankshaft position (Crank Pos.) sensors. I've already replaced both sensors as well as all four oxygen (O2) sensors, but the P0016 code persists. Additionally, when driving above 3500 RPM, the vehicle stutters noticeably—almost like it's hitting a rev limiter. This behavior is concerning and has not been resolved by standard sensor replacements. I'm seeking advice on how to properly diagnose and fix this issue. Any insights or solutions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

The P0016 code specifically indicates a timing mismatch between the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, not necessarily that the sensors themselves are faulty. Did you replace only the individual cam sensor or the entire drive assembly containing the cam sensor? Have you attempted rotating the drive assembly to manually adjust the timing alignment?

Hey, I know this is an older post but I'm experiencing exactly the same issue with my 2005 Jeep Wrangler automatic. Mike—did you ever find a solution to resolve the P0016 code and the high-RPM stuttering?

A failing sensor can trigger a sync-related DTC like P0016, but in many cases, this code points to improper distributor timing. The issue often stems from a seized bushing inside the distributor that prevents proper alignment, or worn cam gears damaging the distributor gear. This problem may also manifest as intermittent low oil pressure warnings. A high-quality scan tool is needed to properly re-sync the engine timing with the distributor, and I recommend using only OEM or dealer-grade parts for the crankshaft sensor and distributor assembly to ensure reliability.

On my 2005 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L, the P0016 code was caused by a worn-out oil pump drive gear—this component also drives the tone ring inside the camshaft sensor housing. A dealer quoted $200 for replacement, but I found that the issue stemmed from premature wear due to a manufacturing defect. I purchased a used, high-quality gear from a salvage yard (from an older 4.0L Jeep) and installed it myself—the P0016 code disappeared. This appears to be a known factory defect that should be addressed by Jeep.
