2004 Lancer P0340 Fault: No Start After Cam Sensor Replacement

Model: 04 Lancer Fault Code: P0340 Posted: 2012-01-11 09:55

I own a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer with a 2.0L engine. While driving, the vehicle suddenly stalled and will not restart. I refilled the fuel tank but still cannot start it. Using an OBD2 scan tool, I received fault code P0340 — indicating a camshaft position sensor issue. I replaced the camshaft position sensor, but the car still won't start and the P0340 code persists. This is a critical issue as I need the vehicle back urgently. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Could the timing belt have broken? That might explain why the engine isn't starting and the cam sensor is showing a fault.

I'll check this when I get home. After reviewing some technical resources, a broken timing belt seems like a plausible cause. I'll update once I've inspected the vehicle.

Confirmed — the camshaft is not turning. This strongly suggests a broken timing belt. Is this a 2004 Lancer with an interference engine design?

The timing belt has indeed broken. When I attempted to manually rotate the camshaft, I felt valve contact — confirming an interference motor. What should I do now? Does this require removing the cylinder head for inspection and repair?

Yes, in my opinion, removing the engine head is the most reliable solution to assess and fix the damage caused by the broken belt.
