2003 Hyundai Sonata P0120 Code: Recurring TPS Issue After Restart

Model: 03 Hyundai Sonata Fault Code: P0120 Posted: 2011-06-14 06:54

I'm experiencing a recurring P0120 throttle position sensor (TPS) fault in my 2003 Hyundai Sonata. The car runs smoothly on the first start of the day, even after long drives. However, after shutting off the vehicle and restarting—especially after shopping or refueling—I begin to notice a noticeable lunge and jolt effect after approximately 2.8 miles. This happens repeatedly: every time I drive about 2.8 miles, the P0120 code reactivates. After turning off the car, performing a scan, resetting the system, and restarting, the issue repeats itself on subsequent drives. We've already replaced the TPS with no lasting fix. The problem only occurs during restarts after being off for some time. I'm wondering if this is related to wiring, connector corrosion, or another sensor like the pedal position sensor. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sapper

Inspect the TPS wiring harness and connection for damage, loose pins, or corrosion. Also verify the pedal position sensor is functioning correctly, as a faulty sensor can mimic or trigger P0120 symptoms during restarts.
