'03 Dodge Durango knocking with trouble code P0172

2003 Dodge Durango 4.7l V8 80k When I started the Durango today, there was a knocking noise (kinda sounds like a noisy valve) coming from the engine and I noticed a considerable loss of power. It was still drivable but did not have the pickup as before. I hooked up my OBD-II reader and it gave me code P0172. Checked info on that code and listed a few possible causes (MAF Sensor, FI, Vacuum leak...) but hoping to narrow it down. The knocking noise makes me suspect a bad FI (cylinder 1) but would like some input. Any suggestions or comments appreciated. Thanks

the code is RICH and for bank 1 not necessarily cylinder 1... a scanner would help but we can do BASICS. always easier said than done- removing the plugs for inspection may yeild a clue- the wet black plug would be suspect, we could check all bank 1 plugs foe firing, finally a compression test BUT I suspect a plug will show the rich cylinder. keep it stock be sure to use OEM if replacing parts
