2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7L Engine Won't Start with P0725 Code - Diagnosis and Fix

Model: 02 dodge ram 1500 Fault Code: P0725 Posted: 2007-07-19 04:45

My 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 4.7L V8 engine won't start. The engine does not turn over, even though I've installed a brand new battery. There's no clicking sound from the starter—just complete silence when attempting to start. The check engine light is on, and an AutoZone scanner reads fault code P0725: 'Engine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction'. I recently replaced the crankshaft position sensor last month, but this issue persists. The truck has only 20,000 miles on it and was purchased new in 2002. I'm concerned about what might be causing this, especially since a starter failure at 20k miles seems unusual. I'd like to understand: What exactly is the P0725 code? Where is the engine speed sensor located—on the engine block or near the transmission? And how can I diagnose and fix both the starting issue and the check engine light? Any guidance on troubleshooting this step-by-step would be greatly appreciated.

Always prioritize getting the vehicle started before focusing on diagnostic codes. Does the starter solenoid click when you turn the key? Check for power at the solenoid trigger wire to confirm if there's a wiring issue.

The starter does click, but the engine doesn't turn over. Where exactly is the solenoid located on the vehicle?

It's located on the starter assembly itself. A faulty starter can prevent the engine from turning. I've replaced several starters at the dealership—always recommend getting a full, high-quality starter with a solid warranty. Make sure it matches your truck’s model and year.

Thanks! I know the solenoid is on the starter. But where exactly is it located relative to the engine? Is it under the engine, about the size of a soda can with 'DENSO' printed on it? And how does this relate to the P0725 code?

P0725 = Engine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Have you got access to a service manual for your vehicle? Jeff is right—get the truck running before diving into codes. Once it starts, you can better diagnose what's causing the issue. Good luck and feel free to update us on progress.

Yes, that’s definitely the starter! To be safe, buy a new one that matches your truck’s exact model—make sure it's compatible with your 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7L engine.

Thanks, Jeff and Mohawk! I don’t have a shop manual anymore—I stopped buying them years ago. But given the issues I'm facing with this truck, I might just need to invest in one. I’m going to replace the starter as recommended—but is it really unusual for a starter to fail at 20,000 miles?

I’ve seen a few starters fail early—usually due to off-road use and mud buildup. That might explain some cases, but it's still rare at 20k miles.

Hey Jeff—you won’t believe this! I removed the starter and took it to O'Reilly's. The counter tech tested it with a diagnostic tool and said it passed all tests. I reinstalled it at home, and just before I was about to hit the engine with a hammer, I turned the key on—and it started instantly! Took it for a drive—no check engine light, no errors, no malfunctions. Thanks so much for everyone’s help!

So what caused the intermittent starting issue originally?

Anonymous 2007-07-24 08:03

Likely a bad or dirty electrical connection that was resolved during reinstallation. I had a similar experience with a boat’s power trim motor last year—after cleaning and reconnecting, it worked perfectly. Consider getting a service manual and at least a code reader—it can save you time and money in the long run.

Jeff, I don’t know what caused the intermittent issue—but Mohawk’s point about a loose or dirty connection makes sense. I haven't had any problems since reinstalling the starter.
