I own a 2002 Chevrolet ZR2 4x4 pickup with a 4.3L V6 engine and automatic transmission. Recently, the vehicle has developed a rough idle, and the check engine light is on. The diagnostic trouble codes read P300 (engine misfire) and P440 (EVAP emission system fault). I'm looking for guidance on where to start troubleshooting these issues. Any insights into possible causes or recommended steps would be greatly appreciated.

Simple and affordable checks include inspecting spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Are you experiencing poor fuel economy? If so, note whether city mileage is below 18 mpg or highway mileage under 22 mpg.

I initially suspected an EGR issue, but my vehicle doesn't have one. I ordered a complete tune-up kit yesterday and plan to install it today to see if that resolves the problem.

After testing today, I identified both the misfire and hesitation issues. The cause was faulty ignition wires and ash buildup on the #6 spark plug. I replaced the spark plugs with AC Delco units and installed AutoZone Lifetime ignition wires. Since then, both the misfire and top-end hesitation have completely disappeared.
