2002 VW Beetle Turbo S Repeated P1116 Code: O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Open Bank 1 Sensor 1

Model: 02 Beetle Fault Code: P1116 Posted: 2008-03-05 09:23

My 2002 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo S (82,000 miles, my wife's car) has recently started showing intermittent P1116 fault codes. The code indicates 'O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Open - Bank 1 Sensor 1'. I replaced both oxygen sensors last year, and the vehicle ran fine until about two weeks ago. Since then, the P1116 error appears intermittently — clearing the code resolves it for a day or two before it returns. Given this pattern, does the recurring P1116 suggest that the front O2 sensor (before the catalytic converter) is failing? Or could there be an issue with wiring or connections?

Check the wiring harness leading to the O2 sensor. The most likely causes are either a faulty sensor or damaged wiring. Also, did you install OEM Volkswagen oxygen sensors or generic aftermarket parts? This can significantly affect performance and code reliability.

Were the original oxygen sensors replaced with high-quality, vehicle-specific models? The initial replacement was prompted by O2 sensor alerts — could this have been a misdiagnosis or an early sign of underlying issues?

I suspect the issue might be related to the electrical connection. After resetting the code, it hasn't returned in the past four days. The initial replacement was due to O2-related alerts. Thanks for all the helpful input!
