I own a 2001 Ford Taurus with a 6-cylinder engine. The check engine light is on, and the diagnostic code reading is P0442. Additionally, my fuel gauge has been consistently inaccurate—sometimes showing full when the tank is nearly empty or vice versa. A mechanic suggested I may need a new fuel pump sending unit. Is this repair expensive? Does it require professional work? Currently, I fill up based on mileage to avoid running out of gas. The check engine light indicating 'almost empty' still doesn't correlate with actual fuel levels, so I know when I'm nearly out—however, the gauge behavior is unreliable and concerning.
