P0420 Fault on 2001 Toyota Sienna: Causes and Solutions
I'm experiencing a P042-2 diagnostic trouble code on my 2001 Toyota Sienna, specifically indicating Bank 1 catalytic converter efficiency is below the expected threshold. The code appears only after 3 to 5 consecutive starts, particularly when driving in urban traffic. It does not trigger during long-distance highway drives. The engine runs smoothly under all conditions, which suggests no major mechanical issues. I'm wondering whether this points to a faulty oxygen sensor located after the catalytic converter or a failing catalytic converter itself.
The issue is likely due to a faulty catalytic converter. On highways, where engine temperatures are high and the converter reaches optimal operating temperature, no DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) appears because the converter functions properly. However, during short urban drives, the converter doesn't get hot enough to meet efficiency standards, triggering the P0420 code. A replacement catalytic converter is recommended.
