It was non-existent to start with because he sold the carbon credits - he got paid to let someone else pollute with the Tesla benefits. If he really cared, he wouldn't have sold the credits.

OMG, but what about the mission! \_\_\_\_ Tesla vehicles haven't had all that much climate benefit if we're being honest. 10% of global CO2 emissions comes from passenger automobiles... (I'm not sure if that figure considers some of the more potent greenhouse gases) There are now about 1.5-1.7 billion automobiles in use worldwide. 60-70 million of those are EVs, so about 1.43-1.63 billion still use gas. Tesla has sold about 9 million total vehicles in their 23 years of existence. Assuming they're all still on the roads, all vehicles had equivalent emissions, and Tesla production and use created zero total emissions, then Tesla has replaced a whopping 0.53% - 0.6% of all gas passenger vehicle emissions... reducing global emissions by 0.053% - 0.06%, leaving 99.94%-99.947% of total global CO2 emissions... But, 1. Teslas do generate emissions during production and use, and do cause natural carbon sink destruction. On average, an EV may reduce a comparable gas car's lifetime emissions by 50-80% depending on manufacturing processes, size, type of batteries, type of motors, and source of energy to charge them. 2. Not all vehicles have equal emissions, and Teslas by and large have replaced small to midsize sedans and 2 row CUVs. Some of the most efficient vehicles in use. They haven't replaced many large SUVs, vans, or pickup trucks, which can have double the emissions of smaller vehicles. It's hard to say what impact Tesla's battery storage sales have had on emissions reduction, or their limited solar cell sales, but given that they've made up a fairly small amount of Tesla's total revenue, I imagine it's also a pretty tiny impact. Home battery storage, for instance, doesn't necessarily reduce grid energy use by much given that some homeowners use it more for the whole house battery backup functionality. If we wanted to rapidly cut global emissions, then EVs are about the slowest and most inefficient way to go about it... given that most EVs these days are built based on the assumption that all cars must be useable in the worst case scenarios... for road trips... requiring they all have huge batteries for long range trips. For day to day commuting, most owners will only use about 10-20% of the battery capacity, lugging the other 80%-90% of the cells around with them each and every day where they're mostly wasted. It's not so much that lugging around huge battery packs makes the cars significantly less efficient, due to regenerative braking, but rather that the 80%-90% of cells could have been used elsewhere to far more efficiently reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a daily basis. For example, using the cells in semi trucks that fully cycle the batteries once, twice, maybe even three times a day, versus a personal vehicle owner who may only fully cycle their packs once every 5-10 days. Sure, it's beneficial for people to buy EVs given the alternative; gas cars... but in general, they have minimal impact. If Musk cared about he environment, he'd have worked on initiatives to reduce the world's use of cars in general, reduced the intake of beef and other meats, reduced the amount of non-essential flying people do (for vacations), and reduced the amount of products and energy society consumes.

And EVs killed all the most efficient city cars in Europe under the fleet averaging rule. The whole much "more environmentally friendly compared to an equivalent car" eco-pitch may be true, but that's not what has happened with sub 1 tonne 1.0l city cars being replaced by 2+tonne 500hp equivalent EVs across Europe. A great example was that the UK's highest selling car for years was the Ford Fiesta. This then swapped to the Model Y and Ford cancelled the Fiesta. How those two can possibly be classed as equivalent is beyond me.

That's when I first realized Elon's environmentalism was a total fraud. Before that I thought he was at least a well intentioned piece of shit. Only got worse from there. The fact that he went after Bill Gates for shorting Tesla like it was an act of eco-terrorism or something was especially galling.
