Soared? Really?

Mac-Tyson 2026-02-25 01:12

4.3% rise in price on average compared to a 3.6% decrease in price to other EV’s. Soared was the language used in the original article but not sure if that counts as soaring compared to usual market trends.

Negan-Cliffhanger 2026-02-25 01:13

Used Tesla prices have SOURED since Elon gave Nazi salutes in January 2025.

totpot 2026-02-25 01:18

This is where the data comes from: https://www.iseecars.com/ev-market-study Looking at it, it looks more like the K shaped economy at work. People who can’t afford cheap cars can’t afford cheap EVs and are pushing prices down. People who can afford premium cars are still snapping up premium EVs, pushing prices up.

totpot 2026-02-25 01:19

The 3.6% decrease excludes the Taycan for no reason whatsoever

Slimebag44 2026-02-25 01:22

Come to Canada. Used Tesla have de soared. lol. Plenty of Nazi cars here for sale.

JTxFII 2026-02-25 01:36

Tried to trade mine in, the dealer literally laughed at me. Not even joking. I was trading in a different vehicle and tried to get him to take the Tesla instead. He laughed and said best bet is to try selling privately.

ircsmith 2026-02-25 01:38

LOL. Is that why my 3 is worth $1000 less than it was last month, according to Carvana? Never owned a car that tanked like this one.

budrow21 2026-02-25 01:45

>The two used EVs with the largest rise in prices were Tesla's luxury [Model S and X vehicles](https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-discontinues-model-s-and-x-autonomy-robotaxi-2026-1?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=yahoo.com). Musk announced in January that both models would be discontinued in the coming months to make room for the company's Optimus robot. Seems like an important part of the story. Did they weight it by sales/listings? Or do the low volume models have as much impact as the high volume models? Lots of ways to play with the numbers.

Icy_Car803 2026-02-25 01:53

Also, people have short memories about DoGE, the Nazi salute, manipulating elections, labor violations…

musket2018 2026-02-25 01:56

You should look up the definition of soar

2manyhobby 2026-02-25 02:25

People are starting to figure out that FSD is good for people with disabilities.

1o0o010101001 2026-02-25 02:37

And why the fuck are idiots buying discontinued models .. they should be tanking first

IcyHowl4540 2026-02-25 02:49

The article doesn't even believe it's own math. A net loss of 5% value. From a source linked in the article for last year's stats: "The average price of a used Tesla fell more than 10% in March compared to the same period last year" [https://www.businessinsider.com/used-tesla-prices-collapsing-owners-sell-up-elon-musk-2025-4](https://www.businessinsider.com/used-tesla-prices-collapsing-owners-sell-up-elon-musk-2025-4) From the article itself for this year's stats: "The average price of a used Tesla has climbed 4.3% since the end of the $7,500 tax credit for new electric vehicles in September." [https://www.aol.com/articles/used-tesla-prices-soared-since-114334484.html](https://www.aol.com/articles/used-tesla-prices-soared-since-114334484.html) Author is the same both times, so did the values crater, or did they soar? Well, considering used value is down 5%, I'd lean towards them not soaring.

Phosistication 2026-02-25 02:56

Not in California. People can’t give them away

ProdigalSheep 2026-02-25 03:06

Is this only true if you believe the numbers coming out of Tesla? Elon Musk fired the people responsible for reporting those numbers, and put himself in charge of reporting revenue. I wouldn’t believe any numbers coming from Tesla, but I don’t know if that’s where these numbers come from.

BobZupprentice 2026-02-25 03:27

Had a lease return this month. Tesla wanted 30k for the basic model 3, no upgrades. We laughed and laughed and returned it early.

BringBackUsenet 2026-02-25 03:29

Who wants cars that will wear out in a few years?

BringBackUsenet 2026-02-25 03:31

By killing them off?

Still-Chemistry-cook 2026-02-25 03:47

Discontinued Model S and X went up. You’re being disingenuous.

TheYungSheikh 2026-02-25 04:22

Must be super cherry-picked data. In my country they a disgustingly cheap.

dmilesai 2026-02-25 05:12

I’ve been getting offered $15,000 for my used Model X. There are a lot of miles on it, but I still can’t believe I paid $120,000 for this car. I’m going back to Lexus and never looking back

this_dust 2026-02-25 05:29

Or if it soared after the nosedive around the sieg heil timeframe. Could be more a return.

readit145 2026-02-25 05:42

Tesla goes up like .5% and headlines read “Tesla smashing the market!!” And it goes down like 20% in a day and headlines read “good time to buy Tesla!” Shits a classic at this point.

one-wandering-mind 2026-02-25 07:02

Current prices for used Tesla model y are about 20-30 percent higher than the Hyundai ionic 5. The ionic 5 is consistently rated better. So unless there is some massive price fixing, consumers are voting with their money and still will pay more for teslas. I'm surprised this still persists despite people not liking musk. There are a lot of cheap evs coming off leas this year and used prices are expected to fall even further. Who knows which will fall further.

krazy_dayz 2026-02-25 07:28

Experts predict over 300,000 EVs will return to dealers, causing used EV prices to drop, potentially making them the best automotive bargain in two decades. [Carpro](https://www.carpro.com/blog/youre-extended-forecast-flash-flooding-of-used-evs#:~:text=If%20you%20have%20an%20electric,end%20of%20the%20lease%20term.)

iftlatlw 2026-02-25 09:12

Hey they haven't soared and b why don't you let some competition in from China and learn what real EV cars feel like.

Edwardv054 2026-02-25 11:09

Like I would ever buy a Tesla.

N0thingRllyMattress 2026-02-25 11:28

I’ve owned a lot of cars and the model 3 was the worst depreciating car I’ve ever owned. Like others in this thread it was a nightmare to get decent trade in and get out of it. Probably got a trade in value from 12 dealers before getting a decent trade in value. I just looked right now and my same year/model is worth 1/3 of what it was new. Don’t do it.

WonderChemical5089 2026-02-25 12:22

Are these soared prices in the room with us ?

morgan423 2026-02-25 13:18

Tons of Teslas are coming off of leases this year. Tons of EVs in general, actually. If you want a used EV and can hold off a bit, wait til mid to late year to buy.

hypespud 2026-02-25 14:53

Holy shit at that devaluation Sorry you had to go through that 😔

practicaloppossum 2026-02-26 00:37

Hard to tell where they got that number from. The linked AOL article is a cut-n-paste from Business Insider, and they reference Cox Automotive, but the 4.3% doesn't appear there. In any event, the rise isn't all that surprising. All new Teslas got $7500 more expensive when the tax credit ended, which could make a used one more desirable. And a 4.3% rise is only something like $1200 (per Cox, used Tesla average $31500 so doing the math in my head).

Tall-Memory-6021 2026-02-26 01:14

and then everyone clapped

SophonParticle 2026-02-26 02:38

Not in any listings in my area. They’re cheap and getting cheaper by the week.

mtaw 2026-02-26 02:46

Yeah, this is a fairly meaningless stat. It says the average price of Teslas in general sold by iSeeCars went up by that 4.3%. First that's a small enough change that it may be statistically meaningless. Even if it's taken as meaningful, it's not necessarily good news for Tesla. It also reports that the now-discontinued S and X models saw the largest increases. (for all we know, that alone might make up the overall increase) That would seem counterintuitive but there are two sides to the equation - It could be that a bunch of jittery S and X owners are selling off their vehicles earlier than they otherwise would and lowering the average age (and thus asking price), but that the selloff isn't big enough to crater the price. Supply and demand. Or it could be an actual increase in demand from Tesla fanboys who want one of those and see the opportunity disappearing. Either way it's at most a temporary blip, because discontinued car models don't appreciate in value in the wake of going off the market, unless it's some rare collector car. They just don't.

EverythingMustGo95 2026-02-26 14:37

“It's also a relief for Tesla owners, who have seen their resale values collapse in recent years. Used Tesla prices have been in freefall since 2022 and hit new lows last year amid backlash over CEO Elon Musk gutting government spending through his role at DOGE, which he has since left.” … Congrats on “soaring” 4.3%, led by 2 models being dropped by Tesla.

No_Pumpkin6952 2026-02-26 20:54

I would love to have Chinese EVs sold in the US!!!

ethiopian_kid 2026-02-26 21:42

5% isn’t nothing when we are talking about tens of thousands

sorka95032 2026-02-28 00:37

In December, kbb priced my 2024 MSP UR with 24K miles at $64K dealer trade-in. Today that same estimate has jumped to $74K with 26K miles.

sorka95032 2026-02-28 00:41

Because there's nothing even close to a 2 second to 60 mph car for $110K on the planet. The ZR1X is nearly double and only before doubling again due to dealer markups. The nearest competitor is the Sapphire but endless software issues seem to be keeping folks away from the brand.

1o0o010101001 2026-02-28 01:28

Just get a base lucid for 60k .. they are begging you to take it. It’s better in every way except software. The interior space is s-class big, the interior is not cheap plastic .. fit finish is superb

sorka95032 2026-02-28 03:19

Agreed but bad software is a deal breaker and it's been like this for years.

1o0o010101001 2026-02-28 04:00

Yeah but you can get a rivian tri motor or a Porsche taycan or Cayenne electric .. they are sick cars

sorka95032 2026-02-28 07:28

OK, I'll bite. How do you get any new lucid for $60k? Lowest base price i see on anything is $79k.

sorka95032 2026-02-28 07:30

Again, Tayacan Turbo S starts at $209k. Rivian isn't in the same ballpark in performance.

Leasing is not the same as buying and  according to others in the thread, that end of year deal no longer exists.

RedSix2447 2026-02-28 13:34

Yet trade in values are still shite.

Fair_Bike_8667 2026-02-28 19:31

You couldn't give me a Tesla.

Icy-person666 2026-03-01 01:45

I suspect it is people buying them up for parts. With support already being terrible I could see some folks or business like body shops picking up cars for future part outs. What to me could be the more interesting part is someone getting into aftermarket parts and modifications. I could also see the Tesla folks try and sue over property concerns but it probably won't be more than a threat as it would open up the company to legal "discovery" into defective parts, instaltion and service.

Gildardo1583 2026-03-02 02:59

I'm currently in the market for a used EV. Teslas are the cheap EV option. HAHA. Not buying a nazi car though.

darthracing 2026-03-03 05:25

Carvana offered me $5200 today for my 2014 MS - my kid is using $2K free supercharge/yr on it, so we’ll keep Elon paying until it breaks

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 05:11

I would though.

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 05:17

At least make it cheap enough for me to buy bruh

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 05:18

If its cheap enough I would buy it

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 05:20

God I hope so. I want to buy a used one real bad

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 05:40

How?

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 05:41

Also the biggest motivator is money. Once they see a significant amount of dollar bills they'll ignore those things. Happens every single time with these companies

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 05:43

I actually don't see it that amount of devaluation online. It's an anecdote online so I don't take it seriously. Data usually speaks for itself in the end.

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 05:44

For some models though. A lot of them are getting from leases and it's lowering prices. Hope its enough so I can buy one.

Fair_Bike_8667 2026-03-06 23:47

LOL. The resale on them are awful.

JairoHyro 2026-03-06 23:56

They do have awful resale values but in my family we usually ride until they die. Was gonna drive mine til death but got totaled by someone who was texting and driving :(

Fair_Bike_8667 2026-03-07 02:34

Sorry to hear that. I never touch my phone while behind the wheel.
