>Tesla saw its total volume drop from roughly 326,000 units in 2024 to just over 235,000 in 2025. That is a staggering **27.8% year-over-year decline**. Concerning. >However, this is clearly temporary. Most of Tesla’s growth in Norway in 2025 came from the last two months of the year. That’s due to Norway changing its EV incentives in 2026, **making more expensive EVs, such as Tesla’s, ineligible for some tax incentives**. It resulted in pulling a lot of demand forward into Q4 2025 for Tesla, and consequently, it should make things difficult for the automaker in 2026. Giga Berlin shutdown when?

Far_Addition1210 2026-01-06 19:15

Layoffs?

CallMeSkii 2026-01-06 19:23

At a time when other manufacturers are seeing record sales.

Chemical-Idea-1294 2026-01-06 19:24

And even in Norway they lost market share, while Volkswagen Group, their biggest competitor, gained 15%.

Chris_0288 2026-01-06 19:28

All thanks to Elon being a twat Wonder how finance internally present these results. Waterfall chart with just a big “twat” column.

nplant 2026-01-06 19:28

> But amidst this sea of red ink, there is one incredibly bright green spot that proves the EV transition is far from over Decent article, but what's this supposed to mean? Everyone else's deliveries are going up.

sequoia-3 2026-01-06 19:29

I just looked into a BYD option. Great products. Very affordable compared with Tesla

EarthConservation 2026-01-06 19:30

So their annual sales were down by 153,097 year over year. Europe account for 91,000 units of that. Leaving a 62,097 unit decline for China, the US, Canada, Australia, and all other nations. Short on time, anyone have those numbers? \_\_\_\_ Edit: China: They sold \~657,000 in China in 2024. Domestic sales for December 2025 aren't out yet, but the most they can theoretically have sold domestically in 2025 is 629,026 based on their total December wholesale sales. That would be a decline of about 28,000 vehicles versus 2024. More than likely, a chunk of those December sales were shipped out of China and the decline was larger. USA: I'll have to try and find the full year results for Tesla in the US. However, in December they sold 48,300 ( [https://motorintelligence.com/](https://motorintelligence.com/) ) versus 57,700 in December '24. A decline of 9400 vehicles in that month alone. ( [https://web.archive.org/web/20250128024739/http://motorintelligence.com/](https://web.archive.org/web/20250128024739/http://motorintelligence.com/) ) It's possible that SpaceX and xAI sales helped boost this number. The decline in October was 12,525 sales y/y, and the decline in November was 11,713 sales y/y. ( citations for those are at: [https://www.reddit.com/r/RealTesla/comments/1pe6h10/tesla\_us\_sales\_reach\_new\_2025\_low\_in\_november\_mi/](https://www.reddit.com/r/RealTesla/comments/1pe6h10/tesla_us_sales_reach_new_2025_low_in_november_mi/) ) So.. for Q4... Tesla saw a decline of 33,638 sales in the US. \_\_\_\_ Edit 2: I went through motorintelligence's web history to get the US sales volumes for every month of 2024 and 2025. Results: Month 2024 2025 Diff 1 53830 48500 -5330 2 54045 43650 -10395 3 50467 44835 -5632 4 47300 45875 -1425 5 51635 46150 -5485 6 54208 50237 -3971 7 53002 53816 814 8 53160 55500 2340 9 53077 62834 9757 10 53175 40650 -12525 11 51513 39800 -11713 12 57700 48300 -9400 Total 633112 580147 **-52965** So... Tesla was down 52,965 sales (8.366%) in the US in 2025 vs 2024. This is worse when you consider that their higher margin model S/X/CT sales sucked, and they began offering cheaper "Standard" models of the 3/Y in Q4. They did, however, raise prices on some of their models/trims in 2025 vs 2024, although they've been doing a lot of selective inventory discounting, so it's hard to say whether those price hikes actually experienced sell through at full MSRP. The reason they were able to raise prices on the S/X in 2025 while selling significantly fewer units is because they cut their production of S/X/CT by 40%. That would increase per unit production costs, which are being offset by the price hikes. I also wouldn't put it past Musk to have used SpaceX and xAI to purchase CT's at higher than MSRP to boost their profits.

a neighbour in UK just ordered a Model Y - but his wife first of all refused him to get it, he eventually ordered anyway - but shows the level of hatred to Elon. It is because of him she didn't want him getting one. This is also a guy who bought shares in them 3 years ago near a previous peak - so hes' a longterm believer! and he can afford it easily.

Reality will catch up eventually. Tesla is just another american brand, it’s always just slow deterioration outside the US where it’s all the hype. See Ford, Chrysler, GM et al.

Nascaram 2026-01-06 20:10

Many of the new VWs look amazing

Brokenandburnt 2026-01-06 20:10

richincleve 2026-01-06 20:21

I read that title and expected the article to be about how a bunch of Europeans got ran over due to the car's junky self-driving mode. But this is much better.

New Street Research analyst Ferragu? There’s lots of folks still drinking Elon cult Koolaid ! 😂🤣

habfranco 2026-01-06 20:58

I’m actually surprised they haven’t shut it down yet. There’s no reason their Shanghai gigafactory can’t supply both Europe and Asia, it was sized for much more capacity than their current deliveries. One reason is probably that closing a company in Europe is way more complicated than one might think. There are actually laws here that protect the workers, so they might end up having to sell the whole gigafactory with a huge loss to a competitor, provided that the competitor preserves employment.

I think that same article stated that it's estimated all Tesla factories were operating at around a 70% capacity. I'll see if I can find that source

practicaloppossum 2026-01-07 01:59

You're getting your apples and oranges mixed. Tesla sold 235,000 vehicles total in Europe. Ford hasn't released their numbers yet, but their sales in Europe are around 450,000.

to be fair nearly all of them have done a GODAWFUL job of bringing EVs to market with the exception of Hyundai / Kia

HT1990 2026-01-07 06:32

It’s mostly due to Norway and the massive discounts Tesla offered there including very low cost financing. That combined with ending government benefits in 2026. In Germany their models aren’t even among the top 10 EVs sold this year afaik.

Normal-Selection1537 2026-01-07 06:35

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-07 13:38

My old college roomie is from china, we visit each other once a year - he told BYD quality isn’t great over there, and it’s propped up heavily by the government Tesla there is seen has a high quality brand (I doubt anyone in this sub has ever been to china) Him and his fam all have a Tesla because of it

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-07 13:38

Mr friend bought a china made tesla in Australia - he said everything about it is better than the seal lol

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-07 13:39

The quality of the new refreshes are actually quite excellent, and overall the Tesla, as far as super superior, especially in software and technology to the BMW

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-07 13:39

Looking at global sales - Tesla smashes VW lol

Chi_Chi_laRue 2026-01-07 15:00

Musk should really be put in prison at this point. It’s ridiculous how many people have perished in his pursuit of progress. And he literally has enough money to build fake towns and hire stunt drivers to test his stupid fucking cars but that wouldn’t maximize his profits. To me he’s an incredible asshole and I’d rather freeze to death than get into one of his cars.

Aardappelhuree 2026-01-07 15:21

I also ended up getting one - I don’t like Elon or the US but the car is just a good deal for me.

Donkey_Apple 2026-01-07 15:46

Here in the UK, Tesla model Y and 3 were the best selling EVs in 2025, by a huge margin. So whilst sales are down, they are still over 10,000 units in front of the third best seller.

Personal-Agent7819 2026-01-07 15:51

Thank Elon and Trump for this.

pzerr 2026-01-07 16:07

To be fair, that could be a legitimate business choice. Lots of companies get bloated and that is just bad for the company and for society if you have low efficiency. But it should raise questions when a companies' value is based on growth to be sure. And at 1.5 trillion, Tesla is 90% based on growth.

andrewchron 2026-01-07 16:11

Oh look , another article from electrec hating tesla..., tesla needs a smaller car, whoever was in the market for a large by europe standards sedan-suv (and expensive one) has already bought one. You cannot sustain YoY with such large cars in Europe and especially in a declining economy that also faces increased competition.

Ok-Anteater_6635x 2026-01-07 17:32

Either a smaller car overall or a compact SUV (T-Roc, 2008 or 3008, etc.)

Ok-Anteater_6635x 2026-01-07 17:34

They will provide a platform, everything else will need to be done by the car manufacturer. This is not a FSD competitor.

newaccountzuerich 2026-01-07 18:36

The batteries are assembled by the vendor onsite. Could you imagine the increase in lithium fires if Tesla had control of another technology they're short on knowledge with? The motors are also built internally as a completed assembly, being built by a third party group (similar to how e.g. EPAM or TCS provide warm bodies in seats, the battery builders aren't internal employees, but contractors). Tesla does not have good vertical integration in the core silos, which has been an interesting set of management choices. That choice will bite them when stuff goes sour and there's far less future economic leverage available

RidingtheRoad 2026-01-07 20:40

As every Musk cultist would say.. lol.

PetrovskyKSC 2026-01-07 22:07

They are only a few years removed from being AI-calibrated to identify and run over American tourists

RidingtheRoad 2026-01-07 23:38

Can you tell me why you need to go to China to compare a Tesla to a BYD? Maybe BYD keeps the pov models for the home market, a fairly common practise. Idk, but maybe the cars Tesla sells into the China market are the top end models, also a common practice. Also, maybe your friends feel so much better driving a foreign make. Like people here feel so good driving a Mercedes or BMW even though they weren't that much better than the top-level cars made locally (when we did have a car manufacturing business in Australia) There is a marked difference in favour of BYD here in Australia.

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-07 23:55

The car is at Tesla sells in. China are the exact same we get here… but Chinese workers are better than American worshipers seemingly so it looks like it’s better quality Yes, that is probably true about the foreign cars, he’s from a wealthy family and basically all his friends have a Tesla, his dad has a BYD, and after taking one ride in it, it’s only one so obviously I’m not an expert, I don’t understand the height. I guess it’s just home-field advantage, but the quality is similar. If not a step below Tesla, even told me BYD is popular because of the Chinese government.. I would assume in Australia, the BYD’s that sell their are the most are the cheaper models? Because it seems like the Tesla model Y is the best selling EV in Australia. So maybe if Tesla had a cheaper remodel, it would also outsell them

matmyob 2026-01-08 01:23

😂

[deleted] 2026-01-08 07:09

Much cheaper to have a swastika tattooed onto the forehead than buying an actual tesla

Saw a sticker on a Tesla the other day saying the bought it before Elon went crazy. You know the brand is bad when people have apology stickers.

I read a Top Gear review of both the Tesla and BYD, and apparently the Tesla still rides better than the BYD. BYD hasn't got their ride tuning perfect yet. By how much. I don't know. But the BYD that Top Gear tested was not that much cheaper than the Tesla. It's possible that Chinese market BYDs can be a lot more affordable, but Chinese workers also get paid less in USD so that could even out. What I got from the comparison was that if somebody had boat loads of money, and was ambivalent politically/morally, they would want to buy the Tesla over the BYD of somewhat similar price, because BYD has not perfected their car's handling and ride yet. BYD gets a 3/5, Tesla a 4/5. https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/tesla/model-3 https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/byd/seal Id personally prefer the car with more interior buttons. Tesla is notoriously minimal on buttons. But apparently the BYD doesn't ride quite right. it's a top contender, essentially. Maybe if BYD picks up some more institutional engineering knowledge, they can improve on the Seal's shortcomings and equal the Tesla?  Kinda like Hyundai and Kia rivaling Japanese/American these days. They used to be trailing. But it took them many years to catch up. Can China/BYD improve faster, with modern tech? Also Hyundai and Kia may have benefitted from foreign partnerships. Not sure if BYD Is partnered with say GM.

Dependent_Purchase35 2026-01-16 19:48

That's an odd complaint considering the Tesla models using a typical sprung suspension has an average ride. My Model S had the air struts suspension and as would be expected, rode like a cloud just hovering over the road and even the normal jarring jolt from significant potholes were largely subdued.

progrethth 2026-01-23 00:01

VW is growing fast while Tesla is shrinking in the EV market. VW will at this pace overtake Tesla in a couple of years.
