It’s Starting to Feel a Lot Like Tesla’s Robotaxi Program Is Mostly Smoke and Mirrors

Tesla doesn’t have a robotaxi program.

avaholic46 2026-01-01 15:16

But the fuhrer assured us that autonomy was a solved problem years ago! 😭😭😭

Frequent_Help2133 2026-01-01 15:16

Starting to?

dezastrologu 2026-01-01 15:17

It was smoke and mirrors the second it came out of that dipshit Musk’s mouth

Prize_Proof5332 2026-01-01 15:17

To the surprise of no one

Outaouais_Guy 2026-01-01 15:19

Exactly.

PantsMicGee 2026-01-01 15:21

Oh I see and hear many Elon cultists daily still. Idiots that they are.  I think most are, at this point, too embarrassed to admit their delusions.

QuantumConversation 2026-01-01 15:22

So much of Tesla is smoke and mirrors.

Less-Explanation160 2026-01-01 15:22

😂😂😂 say it ain’t so

Scrutinizer 2026-01-01 15:22

"starting to" Welcome to 2015. Buckle up, shit's about to get fucked.

luv2block 2026-01-01 15:23

At this point you gotta wonder if Musk has a treasure trove of blackmail on all the politicians, so much so that no one is willing to take him down. I guarantee all kinds of illegal shit is going on with the stock and the business in general. All their top engineers quit, sales tank, and the stock goes up. Give me a break. But so long as the SEC, IRS and DOJ are told to look the other way, this charade can keep going on.

RandomlyJim 2026-01-01 15:24

I bought a book in 2019 about Tesla converting all teslas into short term taxis so that my car could be living for me while I was at home or in the grocery store. Elon Musk was saying that it was only a year away.

eclwires 2026-01-01 15:25

GlassHeart09 2026-01-01 15:27

For Tesla it would be more of a vapor and aluminum foil.

Brave_Nerve_6871 2026-01-01 15:28

Elon has a smoke and mirrors program

texas-playdohs 2026-01-01 15:28

Noooooo!!! Musk is usually such a straight-shooter.

Mvewtcc 2026-01-01 15:29

i watched lots of youtube influencer and I think many of them really believe FSD can solve level 5 self driving. I think they believe since FSD can do 99% already. Alk they need to do is keep improving, and they can solve self driving. Me personally I don't believe it because 99% and 99.9999% is very different. and every .9 is exponentially harder.

PowerFarta 2026-01-01 15:29

Pivot to robots!

Sanpaku 2026-01-01 15:29

Aside from the glaring fact "vision-only FSD/autonomy is a dead end", this is *a really bad design for a taxi.* Little headroom/legroom in the back seat, little luggage space. This is not the vehicle form I'd want to shuttle my family to the airport or my friends home from bars. Among the autonomous taxi companies, I think only Zoox has taken the requirements seriously in their design.

Scrutinizer 2026-01-01 15:30

I kinda get it. He made EVs marketable and succeeded where others had failed. Pretty big engineering success and even though he bought the ideas he led the charge to actually make it work on a broad scale. But his track record of overpromising and underdelivering is just so overwhelming it's difficult to figure out how anyone can trust him. The Tesla semi was supposed to be in full production in 2019 with 50,000 units being sold every year. It's now 2026 and those numbers are nowhere to be seen. The Robotaxi was supposed to displace the F-150 as the best-selling vehicle in America but instead it's a freakshow "lifestyle" vehicle mainly aimed at people with a deep need to show how much money they can throw away on crap. He promised "thousands" of Optimus robots available in 2025 but again, it's 2026 and he appears to be short by....thousands. Per him the first manned mission to Mars was supposed to set foot on it last year. His grift is simple. Once things start to go sideways, just make a bigger promise. Hard to blame him for doing it because it keeps working.

He doesn’t need blackmail. If you have $800B or whatever then blackmail doesn’t matter anymore . When you can spend $1B to just make any problem go away…

dezastrologu 2026-01-01 15:32

So much of Musk

No worries- Tesla "aint a car company" (despite 99% revenue being cars) and Elon will CURE ANY DESEASE WITH MARSHYPERROCKETPOWERSOLARAICHIPINJECTIONS! It's... like, SUPER profound! You gotta be, SO smart to understand... you DO understand, right? If not, i mean, you wouldn't be smart, LIKE ME! BIG BRAIN SMART! That level of smart! Truly insane! .... yeah.

Starting?

Electrik_Truk 2026-01-01 15:38

I was a Tesla fan for some time, owned a Model 3. But everything after the Model Y has been nothing but a stock pump. They haven't released a single new thing worth a damn since then. I don't even hate the Semi. I think it's a legit project, but damn it was announced 8 years ago! No doubt in my mind this robo taxi stuff is and has always been smoke and mirrors. Just like Optimus, FSD, Roadster, battery swapping, and everything else they've ever announced in the last 8 years.

Smartimess 2026-01-01 15:39

One million Tesla robotaxis next year, pinky promise!

Fuskeduske 2026-01-01 15:51

starting to look like?

Broad_Departure_9559 2026-01-01 15:55

Agree. I know things can change over time, but I’m not seeing the revenue or full value in the market for even Waymo. I do see it as a test bed/R&D for tech, which is kinda scary if you think about it. But look at this market this way : It’s Uber without having to pay the driver anything. But drivers for Uber/Lyft make a small percentage of the fare anyway -and THATS my market and potential revenue ? Elon’s vision of your car driving away at night and “working for you “ and bringing in extra money, then showing back up at your house at 8am for you to go to work is pie-in-the-sky. Your car would show up either vomit on the backseat or someone would take a dump, and that’s even if the tech worked.

HanzJWermhat 2026-01-01 15:55

It’s just gotta last long enough for the next grift

Key-Beginning-2201 2026-01-01 16:00

MikeRippon 2026-01-01 16:01

Just in: Tesla looks to reduce costs and improve efficiency by expanding vertically into the mirror and smoke machine industries.

RN_Geo 2026-01-01 16:02

It has always been bogus. Everyone knew this except the cultists.

PlannerSean 2026-01-01 16:02

Tesla is mostly smoke and mirrors

Induane 2026-01-01 16:03

Their inability to deliver as promised is a huge issue, but IF they succeed in their overall goals then it does make the company rather interesting in the way it's integrated. I have my doubts, but they are structuring more as an energy company in some sense. The biggest issue at this point is the Elon Musks decline into weirdness and grandiosity (or the gradual inability to ignore existing weirdness lol).

luv2block 2026-01-01 16:03

probably doesn't need it. If I were Musk and wanted to own the gov, I'd just hire, or outright pay off, various NSA/CIA/FBI employees for the dirt. Hell, I'd pay off international intel personnel as well. It's the only way I can explain why even people like Obama don't say shit about Musk. He's untouchable. Even Bernie Sanders hardly mentions him. This guy is protected in ways no one else is.

dsmith422 2026-01-01 16:06

Ironic considering that CBS News is now a propaganda outlet for the right since Bari Weiss is the head of their news division.

merkidemis 2026-01-01 16:09

It would be fine if they stuck to claiming what it is, rather than the constant stream of lies and misrepresentation. It's OK to need to do more real world training with safety drivers on board. It's OK to start with a small fleet at take some time to get it right. But of course this is Tesla, so full autonomy and millions of cars are claimed to be just a few weeks away...

Due_Tailor1412 2026-01-01 16:16

But what if you LIKE to drive to work with the smell of someones vomit or dump in your car ..

[deleted] 2026-01-01 16:17

The GOALS are what is Promised! If i promise you a flying car (which they DID) and deliver you a donkey-pulled wagon (the CT)... = that is failure. And it's NOT an energy company! What the hell are you talking about?? 1. They get 95% of their batteries from Panasonic and other unnamed Chinese deliverers (Google it!) 2. The latest battery 'revolution' holds more power because \*drumroll\* - its a physically BIGGER BATTERY! ... AAA vs AA! 3. SOLAR CITY is DEAD. They bought it as bailout for Musk and Kimble and stopped reporting solar installations like 1.5 YEARS AGO after installations caved DEEP! Which was, btw, when THEIR solar rooves set fire to Walkmarkts and they had to remove all ot them... You can only be a Tesla FAN if you DONT KNOW what Tesla DOES! That is the funny part about it! Critics KNOW what they do = total BS! Its very much like Crypto: either you like it- but don't understand it, or you don't like it- and DO understand it! \--- Elon sells vaporware. 100%. And that is all his companies ARE. Enron, Theranos, Nikola. \- Super chips for your brain \- Semi and fake taxis \- unlimited growth! \- fake solar shingles \- Hyperloop (old scifi nonsense he stole and resold) \- rockets that go boom! (do you even follow Artemis?! Its not even a race. Artemis is ALONE on the racing track!) but my favorite: \- BoringCompany and the Vegas "dugoutloop"!! THE TUNNEL! He invented a hole in the ground! With LED but ZERO fireproofing for his EVs that are KNOWN to catch randomly fire! And the loop wasn't RocketTechnology fast and cheap. It took them 20 times longer to dig than any normal fk tunnel ever dug! \--- Jesus. You'd better delete your post. It's embarrassing. Pure delusion based on "i wish I could hope that they might". Reality doesn't care for dreams. Dreams do not get you anywhere if you can't get the job done! By your 'logic' all i need to say, right now, is that by 2027 I WILL CURE CANCER..... and you believe me... and you pay me... even though I do not do anything. BUT I HAVE THE ASPIRATION... - that I might could do it... sometime.... next year... wait no forget that! I now want to invent Star Trek teleportation! Never mind the cancer thing! That is an old hat haha \~ we beam the tumor out of you! We can do this, RIGHT NOW... or in 2030. idk. Did i sell this one hm? I strongly believe< that is (btw) a phrase so they don't get SUED. But feel free to PM me your bank details. I figure you want to invest anyway- can't have FOMO! ... that Teleporter will make us RICH!!!\^\^

avaholic46 2026-01-01 16:18

Tesla doesn't have any secret sauce as an energy company. For all the fluff about Tesla being vertically integrated, GM manufactures more batteries than Tesla does. GM, Ford, and Samsung have been working on massive battery plants that are now completed or close to it. The EV market is softer in the US than expected, so all that capacity is going to spill over into stationary storage instead. Don't forget that China already dominates this industry, just as they do for EVs and solar. Tesla is also a nonfactor in solar panel production. Let's also not forget they have a massive power wall recall underway. This idea that they're about to be a big player in the energy market is more ketamine fueled fever dreams.

avaholic46 2026-01-01 16:20

His brother Kimball had girlfriends lined up for him by Epstein.

Big_footed_hobbit 2026-01-01 16:20

sarcasmismysuperpowr 2026-01-01 16:29

when were you when you realized elon is the worlds biggest scammer? i was a week out of the hyperloop announcement which was pretty hard to swallow if you went thru engineering

Induane 2026-01-01 16:29

The solar panel stuff I think you're about 20000% spot on. They aren't going to compete with the chinese market there. The powerwall is at least a decent product but (imo) overpriced, and I don't know what their marketshare is. They \*do\* have a pretty big marketshare of grid storage, and an excellent network of ev charging stations already in place.

Jk8fan 2026-01-01 16:33

He's gonna have them fully autonomous by the end of 2025. Just need to change the definition of when the end of 2025 is.

waityoucandothat 2026-01-01 16:37

Don’t forget that Tesla works overtime to coverup any accident data and to keep authorities like the NHTSA from accessing substantial in-car data, by calling it proprietary. Imagine, an airline doing the same thing to the FAA, in the event of an airliner crash.

Born_Act_3786 2026-01-01 16:37

Revenue from self driving taxi rides $0. Revenue from robot sales $0. 2026 can only get better you non believers.

But the angry youtube comments on every "I tried a robotaxi" video supposed to comvince me otherwise. Tesla is awesome because something something camera algorithms data, power cut in SF

WizeAdz 2026-01-01 16:43

The “Robotaxi” is really the Model 2. But don’t tell Musk, because he’ll cancel it if he finds out.

noobgiraffe 2026-01-01 16:45

It’s a bit like how the high-dose vitamin C craze got started. A famous scientist Linus Pauling, a two-time Nobel laureate became strongly convinced that large doses of vitamin C could prevent or treat a wide range of illnesses. Because of his reputation, the idea drew a lot of attention and reached a broad audience. The medical community debated it, and over time the evidence didn’t support vitamin C as a cure-all (though it may have modest effects for some people in some situations). But by then the message had already spread, and the belief has stuck around ever since. It's the same for Elon, he had good initial success and huge streak of failures since but people still look back to the beginning.

angryvetguy 2026-01-01 16:45

I believe I'll deploy the first fully functional starship Enterprise some time in 2028. Q2 is the current estimate from my engineering team.

Electrik_Truk 2026-01-01 17:04

Yep. That platform was peak Tesla. Been downhill since.

locka99 2026-01-01 17:10

A vehicle that is 100% fully autonomous is 10x harder than what they fail at doing right now. "Full self drive" can't even be trusted when there is a driver supervising its behaviour let alone if there was no driver.

vxicepickxv 2026-01-01 17:11

They buried a video critical of ICE detention faciliries in the US so late in the schedule they couldn't replace it in Canada because it had already been sent out. Their reasoning for killing it was that they didn't have a response from the government. They're a propaganda arm of Trump.

zitrored 2026-01-01 17:12

_Captain_Amazing_ 2026-01-01 17:12

Diogenes256 2026-01-01 17:16

I hasten to add that he had the resources to fully understand that what he was promising was false. The entire time.

locka99 2026-01-01 17:17

Tesla is going to set this thing up as a franchise - it might say Tesla on the car but somebody else will be responsible for buying vehicles, insuring them, cleaning out the puke, repairs etc. i.e. minimal risk to Tesla and they'll be wanting a hefty cut. Franchisees will find themselves basically indentured by the T&Cs even though they put up most of the money. The thing I would say to any prospective franchisee - if this is such an amazing business opportunity then why is Tesla offloading the risk onto someone else? If it was such a money maker they'd keep it inhouse and keep 100% of the revenue.

Sorry_Exercise_9603 2026-01-01 17:19

lol. Everything from Elon over the past 10 years has been smoke and mirrors. Grifting the investors with techno bullshit is far more profitable than making something that works.

I don't even like coworkers in my Tesla LOL. Plus the more Teslas doing cybertaxi shifts the lower the price would go. Plus my Tesla depreciates when on the road and not much if at all when sitting at rest. FSD does introduce nice changes for Hertz's business model tho, rental cars can have all of the ceremony reduced -- they show up when you want and you can just leave them where you want, and that will be a nice change from the current model.

improbably-sexy 2026-01-01 18:20

Elmo smokes some good stuff, that's for sure

FlipZip69 2026-01-01 18:28

His guidance is not just wrong, it is outright lies. Past guidance is one of the biggest metrics investors should be looking at when assessing the future of a company and the quality of management. In late 2024 Musk provided guidance that Tesla would grow delivers by 20-30 percent. This year will be the second year in a row with an estimated 8 percent decline. That when EV is growing the world over.

LowInteraction9422 2026-01-01 18:35

Possibly snorts some off a mirror

meltbox 2026-01-01 18:43

Has nothing to do with his abhorrent lying he’s always been afflicted with, but yes.

meltbox 2026-01-01 18:44

Or the chargers that were supposed to plug themselves in.

meltbox 2026-01-01 18:45

This. It’s easy to argue one prediction was a swing and a miss but after 10 it’s just negligence at best.

meltbox 2026-01-01 18:49

To be honest though people are so dumb. Back when liberals liked Elon I could have told you the demand they were projecting was nonsense. Then a bunch of companies built factories to make those numbers happen based on the hype and predictably failed. People like to say the current Elon followers are sheep, but he’s duped way too many people for me to have pretty much any confidence in intelligent people being in power in any political party and the vast majority of companies. It’s all just a shitshow soup.

FlipZip69 2026-01-01 18:53

To be sure. People have listed a dozen projects Tesla has engaged in... and missed. In this case it was just such a massive miss on their core business. Something they should have a clear prediction of. Musk is engineering a company to provide the largest paychecks to himself and his directors only. His paycheck will eat up the entire profits of Tesla and some. The value of a company is ultimately based on profit and returns to investors.

friendIdiglove 2026-01-01 18:59

Sounds expensive and unnecessary. What are the advantages of mass data processing in outer space? *Uh… AI, bruh!*

Global EV sales are up 25% this year. Countries in southeast Asia and Africa are beating the US in terms of adoption. China is now the largest car exporter in the world and BYD is the world's biggest EV and car company. The demand is real, EVs are here to stay. It's the US that is still asleep, doubling down on last century's technology, and continuing to sleepwalk towards a cliff.

torokunai 2026-01-01 19:30

just curious, when do you expect Elon to book the $50B/yr net revenue to justify the current market cap @ 30X P/E? (he's at $5B/yr now)

torokunai 2026-01-01 19:31

yup, in 4Q he spent $1B to push the market cap up $350B. Nice work if you can get it.

LSF604 2026-01-01 19:51

It's also true that he came up in an era where tech advancement was happening pretty rapidly so big promises seemed less far fetched

thomassit0 2026-01-01 20:13

Wow, Elon making false promises. Who would've thunk it?

BaggyLarjjj 2026-01-01 20:27

Groundhogs day “this is the year”

zippopamus 2026-01-01 20:30

robotaxi is so last week, we have flying cars now just u wait

pdrayton 2026-01-01 20:41

“Starting to”?!

JollyJoker3 2026-01-01 20:45

Both Tesla and SpaceX have valuations >10x what the actual business is worth. I just don't understand how investors value them that highly.

ObviousCommonSense 2026-01-01 20:48

Ok, so just like Optimus, Roadster 2, Semi, Model 2, Robovan, Solar roof, battery swapping, "snake" chargers, Cybercab, etc?

Brexsh1t 2026-01-01 20:48

2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 Elon Musk “full self driving coming next year”. Time to move on to the Robotaxi stock manipulation technique 🤣

PetalumaPegleg 2026-01-01 20:51

It was very obviously always smoke and mirrors. The fact asshole media idiots like you muppets don't report that for months or years is why you'd otn deserve to exist.

UnlessRoundIsFunny 2026-01-01 20:57

The Model Y was an example where "cooler heads prevailed." Elon wanted to do something crazy and radical with the Y, right after the Model 3 launch had struggled in large part due to his own arrogance and mistakes. Apparently, there were still a few independent thinkers in Tesla at the time who steered the project to "Let's just make a tall Model 3 with a hatch, and not re-architect the whole thing so we can actually get it to market?" And so a modestly adapted Model 3 became the Model Y and their best seller. Because somehow, for some reason, Elon actually listened to someone, rather than just did whatever he felt like.

UnlessRoundIsFunny 2026-01-01 20:58

>Elon Musk was saying that it was only a year away. It still is!

UnlessRoundIsFunny 2026-01-01 21:02

But, but, but...it's cheaper to make! 🤷‍♂️

Actual__Wizard 2026-01-01 21:04

Aww man, it's yet another flagrant scam from Elon Musk? No way man...

Scrutinizer 2026-01-01 21:06

I have a feeling future historians will describe it as some form of mania. The emperor is absolutely naked and the inevitable crash is going to make Enron look like a church picnic.

human_trainingwheels 2026-01-01 21:09

Good thing musk gutted the government so he can’t be held liable for fraud

MF48 2026-01-01 21:29

Of course it is. It’s intended to make their stockholders think additional business units are coming on line, but the truth is Tesla’s FSD is inferior to other systems and won’t ever be sufficient for self-driving without a fundamental redesign that includes LIDAR. Meanwhile, Space X is buying an over 1,000 Cybertrucks to help Tesla make their year-end delivery numbers better. It’s possible the company can turn it around but they have to get rid of Musk first. People around the US are still boycotting Tesla because he’s toxic here. Also, he has no idea how to fix things.

chimpomatic5000 2026-01-01 21:49

Well yeah. Elon is a conman.

jatufin 2026-01-01 21:58

Don't you understand: It's really really really cold in space. Because sci-fi novels of the 50s said so. Datacenters need cooling. Haters will hate, Elon is a genius! /s

IAmCaution 2026-01-01 22:20

LOL, no shit. I’m shocked. /s

Specman9 2026-01-01 22:48

islandguy88 2026-01-01 23:34

fake it till you make it. it's what he does. baffled how people don't know this yet especially where information is readily available for you to do you own due diligence.

Overall_Curve6725 2026-01-01 23:49

That should surprise absolutely no one

Busy-Explanation4339 2026-01-01 23:58

They would need an actual working robotaxi first. Not cars with 'safety drivers'. Not cars driven remotely from India.

Busy-Explanation4339 2026-01-02 00:06

When did it not feel like smoke and mirrors to anyone with even the most basic critical thinking skills?

ZeroSkribe 2026-01-02 00:30

Except even smoke and mirrors are real objects that do their damn jobs

khikago 2026-01-02 00:33

They have a thought of a program though

ArQ7777 2026-01-02 00:49

Since Elon Musk said they will have a massive fleet of Cybercabs in March 2026. We will see if it is true in 3 months.

iamcamouflage 2026-01-02 01:43

Fixed: It’s Starting to Feel a Lot Like Tesla is mostly smoke and mirrors.

qwertying23 2026-01-02 01:57

as a user of FSD I think tesla will get there maybe the timeline would be different since we all know elon's prediction do not account for anything. I have been doing parking to parking consistently in austin. From a technical perspective I think they do have a shot at robotaxis I dont know if it will materialize next year though.

smellyseamus 2026-01-02 03:20

No? Really? Im shocked, shocked I tell thee

towniediva 2026-01-02 03:21

"starting" 🤣🤣🤣

JC1949 2026-01-02 03:29

Yep. I have two Tesla cars. Love them. But autopilot and fsd are nothing close to reliable. I use the former on two lane divided roads and I don’t use the latter at all after experiencing a couple free months of access. This stuff is all hype.

bullrider_21 2026-01-02 04:44

First, it was robotaxis. When it looks like Tesla wouldn't be able to remove safety monitors, Musk shifted his focus to humanoid robots. They will form 80% of Tesla’s market cap in a few years. If this don't work out, then Tesla still has the chip business. It will make more chips than the top 5 chipmakers combined.

Street_Barracuda1657 2026-01-02 04:49

You don’t say…

bullrider_21 2026-01-02 04:50

2025 will be a make or break year for Tesla. If after a year of launching robotaxi operation, it still can't remove safety monitors and not a single humanoid robot sold, Tesla will be exposed as a scam. Still no mission to Mars as claimed by Musk.

Duckonaut27 2026-01-02 05:37

Ya think?

One-Welcome-1514 2026-01-02 07:55

You could say they have cars that perform the essence of rich assholes?

Ok-Bill3318 2026-01-02 08:51

Starting?

mologav 2026-01-02 08:58

He seems to keep having no consequences for his actions. Hopefully he can’t keep that up forever

bluzed1981 2026-01-02 10:18

How about selling 250k Cybertruck? His promise of the roadster that will go 0-60 in under 2 seconds? A fleet of Semi’s? Endless deadlines that come and go and are never met. The list goes on and on

mcot2222 2026-01-02 10:42

The main difference here is margin and scalability. High margin is required for Teslas stock price and valuation. Computer chips and especially software have high margin and are very scalable. Operations is a low margin business and scaling is difficult. It’s also labor intensive, at least until robots can clean and maintain the vehicles and the software is so advanced that fewer humans are required for monitoring. Operational excellence is very hard and in the face of lots of competition there is no moat.

TesticularButtBruise 2026-01-02 11:03

Aren't they only on level 2 so far? I just don't see how they progress beyond that without LIDAR

borsTHEbarbarian 2026-01-02 12:10

This simply cites the New York Times, which doesn't make any actual arguments concerning to any informed investor.  https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/25/business/tesla-robotaxis-austin-waymo.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

trashman786 2026-01-02 14:26

Well i mean they are an "ai" company now, so it was always smoke and mirrors

MikeDFootball 2026-01-02 15:17

WHAT????

blabla_fn_bla 2026-01-02 18:55

Thecuriousprimate 2026-01-03 00:56

Hahaha, weird, it’s like the company that argued in court that false advertising/defrauding customers should be protected free speech might be lying about what they’re products can do.

jgoldrb48 2026-01-03 00:59

They failed the first demo in front of the whole world and the stock continued to go up! It’s the most dangerous car in the road. The crash is inevitable. Oops, can I say that here?!

Moonsleep 2026-01-03 01:50

For anyone paying attention it has always been considered smoke a mirrors.

GoLoveYourselfLA 2026-01-03 06:01

Nortilus 2026-01-03 06:39

It’s not linear and few seem to be able to work it out. It’s like the old RuneScape meme - 92 is half of 99.

Legitimate-Bed1591 2026-01-03 10:52

Or the hyperloop which is "not that hard" \[LITERALLY impossible\]

All_Hail_Hynotoad 2026-01-03 15:12

*Surprised Pikachu face*

BigMax 2026-01-03 17:38

One thing the article gets wrong. When talking about Musk's frequent promises that never actually happen, it says "Investors take these promises seriously." They absolutely to NOT take these promises seriously, or Tesla would be trading WAY under what it is today. They quite literally do the opposite - the see his predictions fail time and time and time again, and they shrug, and say "well, the NEXT one will certainly come true."

Sharaku_US 2026-01-03 18:47

TSLA is like CVNA but 100X worse and will take far longer to unwind.

neliz 2026-01-03 23:06

They're not an energy company because they're reliant on gas and Chinese batteries, they're literally just a wannabe third party in the energy field

Pristine-Ad983 2026-01-04 14:37

It's what Uber and Lyft do. Push as much responsibility and risk on driver and owner so when something bad happens they can point fingers and say it's not their fault.

confused_ma 2026-01-04 17:40

Hello Rip Van Winkle.

charliebyebye 2026-01-04 19:23

A bit like self driving then really. Or his robots that need human operators

PatchyWhiskers 2026-01-05 00:45

This was always a strange way of marketing it, since if it really worked, big companies would just buy fleets of these things as full-time taxis. No-one wants to summon their personal self-driving car and find it's on a 1,000 mile trip to LA with a sleeping drunk in it, or covered in vomit from that guy. It'd be more useful so that a family could share 1 car rather than having several - it could take two people to work instead of just one, for instance.

Senor101 2026-01-05 06:00

If you get in one you better know how to manually open the doors.

reddgreen1000 2026-01-06 08:50

Give him 2 weeks. Don's standard playbook number.

Withnail2019 2026-01-06 14:45

Both businesses are worthless. There is no money in private space launches. There is no longer any money in producing electric cars in the US.

Withnail2019 2026-01-06 14:46

You're absolutely right. 99% isnt that hard and it's nowhere near good enough.

banditcleaner2 2026-01-06 15:59

They don't have smoke and mirrors. They have smoking mirrors.

banditcleaner2 2026-01-06 16:04

Yeah, tesla was cool to like back in 2016-2020. When they were the first to actually make a mass-market drivable and fast EV, the model 3/Y. But they've done absolutely nothing new since then. The semi has not sold well, the roadster was never released, the cyber truck was just a hilarious failure when you look at the price compared to specs before it was released and after...etc etc etc. What tesla needed to do was actually make a real SUV, not the Y, like the rivian R1S, at a similar price point to the Y that has an actual 3 rows (not the bullshit extremely small back space that the Y has) and that probably would've been a great sell to big families. Or even better design an actual electric truck similar to the Ford F-150 lightning. Instead they designed this goofy ass looking truck that nobody wants. didn't make the SUV, and tried to revive interest by releasing a slightly modified Y, and selling it for 25% more. Which worked for a little while but not very long understandably. But anyways, since at least 2021-2022, tesla's main product has been Musk's ability to pump the stock on ridiculous and false promises. the company itself will probably survive but I would not be buying shares anywhere near the current price. in fact if it was any other stock I'd probably short it but we all know how that usually goes.

banditcleaner2 2026-01-06 16:06

It's funny to think about the simple fact that we haven't heard fucking anything about semi in like two years at least. They dont even talk about it anymore

Electrik_Truk 2026-01-06 16:27

Last I heard it's in trials with companies like Pepsi. They certainly have challenges to overcome but at the same time, other manufacturers have now beat them to market, which kind of seems to be the norm now with any EVs. Tesla announces things and others hit the market before them, and often better. If I were to guess, one thing Tesla has always known was very important with EVs is charging infrastructure. I think they are keeping things intentionally slow as they build out megawatt charging.
