God damn how often do you buy cars? Edit: I've owned only 3. First two were unreliable garbage tho, third one is rock solid reliable so I've had it for 10 years now.

It's probably the older models dragging the average down. They mention Rivian and Lucid going through the same thing with their newer cars.

It can be reliable off the lot. Then start breaking down quickly. That is why they survey us every year. I have done the survey on probably 20 vehicles over the decades. They used to mail it out 😀
Different article, it's the one that predicts new car reliability based on the last few years. The new Model Y (81/100) ranking seems off given that the outgoing Model Y was nowhere near that reliable (41/100) IIRC. OTOH, the long-in-the-tooth Lexus IS score (84/100) makes more sense.

Had my Tesla 3 months. New when purchased. Now on third trip to the service center. Had prior car a Volvo for 8 years, one service trip. Before Tesla had lots of new cars, can’t remember ever having a service issue in the first couple years of ownership. Tesla has terrible build quality, like an AMC with a computer.

It’s always amazing to read your Tesla experience and the experience of other owners. I understand cars have defects but darn it why does Tesla seem to have such a dichotomy? IMO the cult Tesla owners look past anything to elevate their personal interests.
I think many Tesla owners are willing to overlook build quality issues because of FSD and Tesla’s extensive charging network. It is very hard for me to do so after spending 100K+. Once the German manufacturers work out their driver assistance software, Tesla will be in real trouble. Mercedes already has level 3 up to 60 mph available in Germany. It is only a matter of time before they overtake Tesla.

In Finland 49% failed their 2024 first inspection which is after 3 years. The second worst was Dacia Duster with 26%. Imagine being way worse than the cheapest most basic car.

As others do, I wonder how many of those 10 were new when you bought them, but also wonder how much is confirmation bias defending your purchase choice.
Plus, they use a ton of sensors for their driver assistance. Way more than just cameras.

The reason for the “Germany Study” is that it’s the TÜV road reliability test done after 3 years. They fail often due to brakes not being used and suspension issues due to the heavy chassis. Normally you bring your car to the dealer who checks it over and fixes anything before they bring it to TÜV for the inspection. There’s no dealer for Tesla, so people bring the car directly to it without any initial check and because of that they fail more, especially the heavier Y. My Toyota would have failed for brakes if the dealer hadn’t fixed it before the inspection. Take away from this what ever you want, I just want people to know the full context since only Germans tend to understand what these reports mean.

… working in the Tier 2/3 supplier world, these guys were ALWAYS amateurs. Their understanding of building a vehicle, other than the powertrain, was less than zero. There is a lot more sophistication to making a damn cupholder, for example, than an idiot like Elon thinks. Now think of stuff like door handles, paint, seat materials, trim and you see why these things look and feel cheap-they are.
I've replaced various door handles on my 2015 Model S 11 times. Do recalls even exist anymore?

It's very rare to hear of an issue on a Tesla though. Seems like the heat pump is the biggest failure point.

Tesla keeps optimising for speed, not durability. Works for early adopters, but not for a mass market that expects cars to behave like… cars.
Maybe that is different in Germany (are there really no dealerships for Tesla in Germany?), but in Denmark, we take our cars directly to inspection not visiting the dealer first and also here, Tesla is failing inspections more often than other brands.
Older cars, no one takes it to a dealer first but for the first required inspection, which is after 3 years, I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t because it’s typically covered under the warranty as part of the yearly inspection from the dealer. I find your statement odd because at least for VW, Audi, and Toyota. I know for a fact they do a yearly inspection under their warranty plan and you find this information applicable to other countries on their website. So it’s not quite true what you say, whether the dealer handles the official inspection or not on the same day, the cars are still being inspected before. I also find it odd that this report is cited everywhere but I have never heard of the Denmark one. If this is happening in many countries then it would make for a far better story.
😂 went to a Tesla service center because the plastic wheel arches were peeling off. The service advisor looks at one side and immediately accuses me of being in an accident. I take him to the other side with the same problem and dude reluctantly agrees to cover it under warranty. The service centers are absolutely terrible. Takes more than a month to get an appointment and forget about a loaner lmao. Impossible to even call them.
Would love to know what parts of the car that doesnt last. I think bushings/suspension and brakes?
They famously used wooden flooring trim pieces from Home Depot to hold down engine parts. Why would anyone expect quality?
