Specman9 2025-11-13 18:03

They hid this until after the Elon pay package was approved!! They knew because it had already been recalled in Australia.

Specman9 2025-11-13 18:04

That's going to cost over $10 MILLION to fix.

dtyamada 2025-11-13 18:08

Honestly, it feels like that's what they were hoping, that they could solve it with a software update. They must've exhausted all software options before resorting to this.

Kindly-Web3356 2025-11-13 18:20

Stock up 7% on this news! Wait WHAT… it’s down??

LightMission4937 2025-11-13 18:33

Tesla builds junk.

Euler007 2025-11-13 18:33

Apparently not a power company either.

Ultraeasymoney 2025-11-13 18:37

I'm really baffled that the stock didn't go up today with that news.

Shootels 2025-11-13 18:42

It’s worse than that. They are going to have to replace even more powerwalls which is unknown. I have two and one failed. Since they don’t make the old powerwalls anymore and they aren’t backwards compatible, they both have to be replaced. This is going to be a huge loss for them. The powerwalls and the labor is about 80-90% of thier cost install on solar plus powerwall. The panels cost almost nothing. They are going to be doing probably 25k worth of work on my system that only cost me 30k. They also basically brick your system and it takes upwards to 3 months to have them fix it. If I could force them to remove the garbage out of my house I would, I already asked.

ResearcherSad9357 2025-11-13 18:46

Another reason not to get a tesla powerwall besides the whole fire thing, Elon can remotely discharge your battery...

Smart-Effective7533 2025-11-13 18:46

Can’t Tesla make just one product that doesn’t actively try to kill you

dtyamada 2025-11-13 18:49

And disable it on a whim.

livingMybEstlyfe29 2025-11-13 19:05

Seriously. In this market, good or bad news and especially Tesla, the stonks keep going up.

kahner 2025-11-13 19:28

and i think powerwall is the only business line at tesla that's actually growing. but after the fires, this recall and all the safety issues with the vehicles who the hell will want to put musk's shit in their home?

Imagine someone deciding they want Elon Musk to be in control over enormous batteries stored inside their house and potentially therefore the flow of electricity to their house. Buying a Tesla is daft enough, but this is just hilariously bad decision making.

YamatoRyu2006 2025-11-13 20:21

Apparently there are a lot of idiots in this world who are trying their best on willingly giving up their life's control switch to exploiters like Musk. Idk if its plain idiotic stupidity, lack of compulsory education or social media doing its thing of successfully brainwashing ignorants into cult followers.

YamatoRyu2006 2025-11-13 20:26

Tesla shouldn't even exist in the first place. What kind of a company is it that only relies on ONE SINGLE INDIVIDUAL's PR IMAGE TO SELL ITS PRODUCTS IN THE FIRST PLACE??? Add to that, they have NO STRONG FOCUS on their PROMISED FIELDS. They keep changing from EVs TO Software, Software to ROBOTS, ROBOTS to ROCKETS, ROCKETS to ISP, ISP to ENERGY. They have been playing with fire all this time, losing in competition against other decent players in the market. Holy fuck what kind of a company that can't even meet its target sales has a 300x valuation?? Either analysts are hyping idiots into pumping up stock prices which only benefits the shareholders, or investors truly believe that TESLA's GONNA CHANGE THE WORLD.

meshreplacer 2025-11-13 20:26

Anything Tesla is utter shit in the end.

YamatoRyu2006 2025-11-13 20:30

Don't trust sales data pitched by Elon's crony companies. He will make thousands of small RC toy cars for kids, sell them and pitch that as "Tesla car sales increased by 1000". Or he will open EV rental and every rental contract will count as a "Tesla car sale". Even their Starlink service is overhyped promise that only eats government's pockets all around the world that use them. Plus the fact that Elon can literally outright refuse to provide service over a single Tweet is enough to discourage you from his companies' products.

YamatoRyu2006 2025-11-13 20:30

Analysts didn't find a new way to re-interpret this and pump up stock prices.

YamatoRyu2006 2025-11-13 20:31

We are heading straight for a big CRASH...............................

DotJun 2025-11-13 20:31

To be fair, all batteries are like this if you opt into the monitoring service.

secretlyjudging 2025-11-13 20:34

It’s ok. Tesla is an AI and robot company now. Not that those things run on batteries and electricity….

Computers_and_cats 2025-11-13 20:40

So glad I didn't get one like I wanted. They are so overpriced compared to something like an EG4 battery pack.

Specman9 2025-11-13 20:41

Nah, it is way more expensive than that.

Specman9 2025-11-13 20:44

I bet Elon counts the required replacements as new sales towards his milestones for compensation bonus.

Shootels 2025-11-13 20:48

If the wait is three months I assume there is a powerwall shortage and/or labor shortage, which the opportunity cost of this crew and replacing powerwalls is about 25k. Do they cost less than what they charge to install, sure. The point is that’s is not a simple swap, they are removing a perfectly fine powerwall, removing most if not all the equipment, replacing it will newer more expensive stuff and buring a crew for the day.

Shootels 2025-11-13 20:53

Imagine having the ability to look forward 7 years and being able to understand where this company was going and who the CEO was going to become. This was one of the only options to have battery storage at the time that was a reasonable price. 7 years ago the company wasn’t off the rails. Your comment is a perfect example of hindsight bias. I happen to agree with you. One of the worst decisions I have made.

Shootels 2025-11-13 20:54

Glad you think I’m an idiot.

There's people that want Tesla HVAC in their house. Some people are just nuts.

Tesler sedans' batteries catch fire. Tesler Cybercucks catch fire with passengers trapped inside. Tesler indoor power storage batteries catch houses on fire. Can't wait for the Tesler battery-powered robotaxies, flying cars, and humanoid robots. Now is the time to invest in fire suppression devices that can neutralize L-Ion battery combustion

where are all those fuckfaces who were saying "the recall only is due to powerwalls that were sent to australia" we all knew the powerwalls are bad. my powerwall died 5 years into its life. lucky no fire. they replaced it for free. wonder if my "new" old powerwall is in the recall list

dorchet 2025-11-13 22:16

i bet they could remotely overload it , too.

This company is hilariously inept

mukansamonkey 2025-11-13 23:40

Just FYI, in most places it's illegal to have the powerwall inside your house. Maybe the garage. But there are all kinds of code issues surrounding things that can release toxic gases when they're on fire or other otherwise malfunctioning. In fact it's partly.why the power walls aren't sold on the open market anymore. Turns out that, once you consider the safety issues, powerwalls have no significant advantage over any of a half dozen other models of solar battery storage. And Tesla couldn't match any of the others on cost.

mukansamonkey 2025-11-13 23:43

Lol no. Powerwalls sold so badly that they aren't even for sale on the open market anymore. You can only get them as part of a package deal, installed by an approved company. In other words, you have to overpay for a fairly generic solar installation so that Elon gets kickbacks.

drillbit56 2025-11-14 00:43

FlipZip69 2025-11-14 01:34

HereWeGo5566 2025-11-14 03:14

Musk was lying and making false promises much earlier.

bevo_expat 2025-11-14 06:14

This seems like a drop in the bucket compared to the roughly 30% sales drop in Europe (-29%) and China(-35%) compared to last year. The board and institutional investors were never going to vote against his obscene pay package.

NotIsaacClarke 2025-11-14 07:56

B-b-but tesla doesn’t do recalls! OTA updates!!!!

ValiantWarrior19 2025-11-14 08:08

That's what happens when stock prices become unmoored from financial performance. Tesla is one of the most overvalued (P/E Ratio) companies of all time by percentage, and _the_ most overvalued company of all time by volume. Tesla stock, like all of Musk's lofty promises, is vaporware, created entirely to dupe the gullible, launder taxpayer, dollars and suck up every penny of VC funding that could go to worthwhile projects that don't involve building glorified 1-mile subways, rockets without a real purpose or design, or pneumatic tubes that were proved impractical over a hundred years ago by much smarter people.

rruusu 2025-11-14 08:08

I bet this is just one more case of Elon “Two Bolts” Musk verbally beating his engineers to use under-engineered components to save manufacturing costs, with an attitude of “just try it.”

AgentSmith187 2025-11-14 08:29

It kind of was in Australia. They did an OTA updates to drain and brick the affected units and then when people reported a fault dealt with it. I wonder how many people out there are unaware their PW2 has been shut down.

AgentSmith187 2025-11-14 08:33

Its a lot easier to sell a car than home batteries i assure you. They are kind of built into the house and removing them would be a major cost. I have 4 Tesla PW2s and actively recommend not buying PW3s. But its easier to say now then when I brought them as there was very few options on the market that came even close. Now we are spoiled for choice in Australia and even the PW3 looks like an outdated overpriced POS. At this point I kind of hope one of my PW2s packs it in so I have an excuse to have the whole setup replaced. But when installed we are talking upwards of AU$40k of batteries with other options being the same or more expensive for less capacity. So tossing them is a big call when the uninstall will be a few grand alone never mind replacement.

AgentSmith187 2025-11-14 08:38

To be fair im in Australia and we still have consumer protections and this would be a refund situation if they didnt replace them under warranty. They are replacing a bunch under this recall already.

rruusu 2025-11-14 08:41

> The lithium-ion *battery cells* in certain Powerwall 2 systems can cause the unit to stop functioning during normal use, which can result in overheating and, in some cases, smoke or flame and can cause death or serious injury due to fire and burn hazards. I believe Tesla uses the same 21700 cells in some of their electric vehicle batteries, at least for Model 3 and Model Y. If these are Powerwall 2 units, they are likely using the cells that are manufactured at the Gigafactory in Nevada since January 2017. Those cells are also used in vehicle battery packs. Technically they are manufactured by Panasonic at the Tesla facility, but are jointly designed and engineered. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigafactory_Nevada > Panasonic makes the battery cells at the Gigafactory with the new form factor '2170', jointly designed and engineered by Tesla and Panasonic and subsequently updated. Wondering if that subsequent update is related to the units that are included in the recall, and which version is the one that was recalled. https://electrek.co/2020/11/03/tesla-tsla-new-battery-cells-panasonic-faster-charging-capacity/

AgentSmith187 2025-11-14 08:41

Still sold in Australia by a bunch of companies as they used to be the class leading option. I.stress used to be the competition on features and price is fierce now and honestly the PW3 is more a lateral step than improvement and yeah a lot of people burned with it not being compatible with the PW2. Its popularity is down and places that used to be Powerwall only sellers now offer other brands and push them instead.

rruusu 2025-11-14 08:47

Looking more closely, the recalled units are “from November 2020 through December 2022,” and the new version of the cell was announced in November 2020, so it seems that the new version of the cell is the culprit.

DistributedView 2025-11-14 09:24

I do understand (and glad I've held off from home battery storage until now). The market is only just becoming mature, and as you say storage systems don't really have a second hand market in the same way as cars. My point was more one that signs of Elon/Tesla's true character have been around for a LONG time. There were some early cult escapees (I guess I'd be called that) however the cult continued growing and their voices drowned out all the warnings. It's taken the Trump / Salute / DOGE stuff to turn the tide of popular opinion.

AgentSmith187 2025-11-14 10:07

I knew and brought a Kia EV6 over a Tesla long before I brought the Powerwalls. But when I was shopping battery storage for home they were really the only game in town outside the budget garbage end of the market and the budget ones were basically no cheaper just had poorer tech and support. I actually held out for ages to see what Enphase brought to market but there initial offerings in Australia sucked for my needs costing more and needing a lot more space than I had available. Wish I had held out longer now but im stuck with the Powerwalls until they fail basically.

DistributedView 2025-11-14 10:25

I'm in the UK, so the solar sums are not quite so straightforward, but I've recently bought a large commercial property - it has plenty of space for storage and a large roof area, so just exploring the options now. Talking of space requirements - My father was an electrical engineer for one of the big UK M+E firms. They put battery storage into the Imperial War Museum back in the 70s (a huge room full of lead acid batteries) . I wish I had been old enough to have seen it - I'm sure it would be very steampunk compared to today! (Though why a museum needed such an elaborate battery backup system is beyond my pay grade/security clearance 🤣🤣🤣)

AgentSmith187 2025-11-14 10:29

Yeah being Australia in Summer i can blow through 100kWh of production a day at times with my solar so storing some makes a lot of sense.

I am glad that my mate isn’t going with a power wall for their home battery now .. I did mention that Tesla design made it prone to fires and this has proven it .. also they are way more expensive than other batteries

dtyamada 2025-11-18 14:06

If they were still on the fence this should be all the evidence they need to stay away from the powerwall.

OraxisOnaris1 2025-11-18 19:56

I remember last Easter my uber MAGA uncle was going on about how the house next to him with a tesla Powerwall in it had been attacked and the fire spread to his property and caused all sorts of fire damage (his home is a rowhouse in Baltimore). This was during peak Tesla Takedown. I said at the time, and it's nice to be vindicated, that it was more likely caused by Tesla's shit engineering (I think I phrased it a bit more diplomatically at the time).
