Nice
Do it. What else do they have to lose
Uh yes these cars are coming closer to mordor
That traitorous Carney, does he not care about the families of all the hard working Canadian factory-workers dependent on Canada's domestic EV manufacturing?? /s
I guarantee you the only thing holding this back is they are likely trying to get China to commit to manufacturing in Canada. If China agreed to that... so basically you could take all the US brand auto plants in Canada and reconfigure them to Chinese auto plants employing Canadian labor... this would be a done deal. It can't be emphasized enough how much we in Canada want to get away from the US. Even after Trump, the country as a whole is seen as bat shit crazy by Canadian.
Exactly. Who's benefit is the tariff for?
Do it for small city cars. No Canadian/US manufacturers make those so local jobs will not be impacted. Be strategic. Toyota makes the RAV4 in Canada - so steer clear of the direct competitor from China.
They have no issue with manufacturing in Canada. For example BYD has factories in Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Brazil and is planning for four more in 4 different countries. But if Canada can somehow uncoup itself that would be EXTREMELY impressive. Not many countries have accomplished it as far as I know.
BYD already has an EV bus plant in Canada (Ontario too), but it's not very high capacity.
The problem for china is we've treated them like shit. We literally kidnapped (well, arrested) the CEO of Hauwei because the US told us to. We tariffed their cars, because the US told us to. We attacked their reputation on the global stage, because the US told us to. Hell, Doug Ford (premier of Ontario), said Trump should join Canada in attacking China (literally said "in attacking China"). So if I'm China I don't want to invest in Canada unless I can be convinced they aren't going to screw me in 3 years when Trump is gone.
Good, fuck Tesla.
Yeah, we don’t have the greatest relationship and we have fundamentally different societal values. But we do have a common interest in uncoupling from the states, finding new markets, and potentially both benefiting. China knows the bind we’re in though, and you’re right I’m worried we’d get backstabbed.
More auto manufacturing jobs :/
Which were already leaving Congrats to Trump for bringing China to his front porch.
Scrapping this tariff won’t make a difference to the US, as you won’t be able to import these cars from Canada to the US (although maybe you’d be able to drive them across the border for a trip).
“Won’t make a difference” They are now a stones throw away Big difference it will make as who knows if consumers start questioning “what is that” if they see a car visiting from Canada.
Right now the best ev is Tesla in Canada. This eliminates that
Chinese Tesla, which will be replaced by a different Chinese EV, so no impact on US-Canada car trade.
Many Canadians will switch from American produced/owned cars to Chinese ones. There is an impact
I saw a BYD near time square the other day and almost got whiplash.
Exactly. Like a few social media car personalities like marques brownlee and Forrest auto reviews got Chinese EV’s even though they aren’t road legal. People were coming up constantly asking about them when they were filming
No way US EVs compete with China EVs at that price point. An increase in price of oil for shipping would have an effect but probably an inverse effect on EV demand in general. Possible entry level in low to mid teens, government subsidies for market share, overall anti American sentiment.
Good, fuck the USA. We shouldn't be buying anything from those idiots.
To Americans. So why should Canadians care?
They should given equity companies made the entire planet poorer. Better to get some sales/income than zero to the economy.
I'm afraid it might be like Bill Gates giving away his wealth...
Gross.
But are our values further from China than they are from the US? I mean, Canada has TONS of minority populations from the BRICS nations. We don't believe one nation should rule the world through force. We believe in multi-polar consensus (United Nations type stuff). And while we are capitalist, we lean socialist at the population level. I think we're actually closer in ideology to China than we are to the the USA (who have one foot into the world of fascism).
Blow it up.
Even if we got an Obama third term, the country will always be the risk of crazy in 3 years or less. is that a place you would want to make a long term bet on?
Also, it’s good for canadians to be able to buy cheaper cars that are still high quality.
Hah, the backstabber worrying if they get backstabbed. 典型
What have you been told? Genuine question there’s propaganda on both sides, us people are just here to be fed the narrative
Yeah, it's not a Trump issue. It's an America issue. We feel the same in much of Europe.
Sure you won't able to import those cars to the US but it could absolutely deal a huge blow to the big 3. Canada is ironically the largest US auto export market. Canadians buy a disproportionate number of cars made by the big 3. If Canada allows the Chinese autos to undercut the big 3 on price, it could wipe their profit margin
Fk the USA. Time to partner with someone that is willing to commit to mutual benefit
\*all of them
Lol then Canada will literally destroy the last remnants of their car industry. Typical idiocy out of Ottowa
that's because Canuks have lost their minds
lol 😆 🤣 this is why I love it when Trump wrecks your economy.
The things you listed are on the outer fringes of foreign policy. When it comes to domestic values we overlap with the US to a much higher degree. Democracy, egalitarianism, religious freedom, speech freedom, access to free and fair justice, are all areas where China goes a completely separate way.
What auto industry in Canada are you referring to?
What industry?
