Tesla Cybertruck sales are flatlining | Things are so bad, Elon Musk is selling them to himself.

After a brutal few months, Tesla sales are finally picking up thanks to expiring federal EV tax credits. But while customers are snatching up Model 3s and Ys, they are increasingly turning up their noses at the newest addition to Tesla’s lineup: the Cybertruck. Tesla only sold 5,385 Cybertrucks in the third quarter, down 63 percent compared to the same period in 2024, when the automaker delivered over 14,000. The company has sold a little more than 16,000 Cybertrucks so far in 2025 — a far cry from the 250,000 that Elon Musk once predicted would be sold annually. Tesla is now expected to deliver around 20,000 Cybertrucks this year, a steep drop from the estimated 50,000 sold in 2024. The third quarter was an otherwise banger for EV sales, with a total of 438,487 units sold. That’s up 40.7 percent from the previous quarter and higher by 29.6 percent year over year. Shoppers rushed to snatch up available EVs before the expiration of the $7,500 tax credit on September 30th. Sales are expected to drop dramatically in the fourth quarter — which could make the Cybertruck’s situation even worse. Thanks Verge! A good Elon bash does the world good.

rkcth 2025-10-13 19:54

I swear they sold all 16,000 in my area. Every time I drive to work I see 3-4, and usually another 2-3 on my way home, and my drive is only 18 minutes, so it seems like there’s a lot around here, though in my church’s parking lot I’ve only ever seen one.

Makeshift-human 2025-10-13 19:55

I'm surprised they sold more than three of these abominations

[deleted] 2025-10-13 19:56

I run into at least 6 of them where I live in the Santa Cruz mountains. One of them is the famous one that spawned the creation of /cyberstuck it's like a brush with idiot fame every time I see it at the gym.

Crazy-Cook2035 2025-10-13 20:39

I had one of these break down on a job site. A very basic pothole and the tie rod snapped Whistling diesel the YouTube personality tanked the sales too with his review approaching 12 million YouTube views

art-is-t 2025-10-13 20:39

Anytime you check who is driving a cyber truck, it always turns out to be a dufus looking individual

xMagnis 2025-10-13 20:42

Well we all knew he was going to punt them somewhere.

BigMax 2025-10-13 20:47

Curious - what area do you live in?

BigMax 2025-10-13 20:47

It could be. There's one near me with a company logo wrap on it. I see that thing once or twice a week. Without the wrap, I'd probably assume I'm seeing multiple cybertrucks.

gmwdim 2025-10-13 20:56

And the prison wouldn’t be owned by another billionaire.

Anstigmat 2025-10-13 20:57

There is a world where people got over the unique styling and embraced a really tough functional EV truck...but man the POS that Tesla actually shipped is astonishing. Put aside the looks, it's absolute junk on a scale only comparable to Delorean. I honestly would love to read an oral history of how this went down. How does Tesla make a vehicle this bad? I know one guy who adores his Tesla Model 3, and fair enough it's a functional vehicle. He's into photography and would post pics of his car from time to time. He also had a Tacoma that he loved. I am fairly sure he sold the Taco for a CT...but interestingly enough he made exactly 2 posts about the CT before going completely radio silent on it. Either he felt the backlash people were having to them (this was the height of DOGE) or hopefully for him it was a lease he could get out of. Someday there will be a movie comedy about the Cybertruck and how big of a disaster it is.

gmwdim 2025-10-13 20:58

They have the most punchable faces.

iIdentifyasGrinch 2025-10-13 21:00

and let's not forget the geniuses who drove, dragged, and towed a CT through the Rubicon Trail -- with a fleet of support vehicles which \*could\* navigate the trail, going back and forth to dealers grabbing spare parts to replace all of the ones that failed on the CT

hplcman69 2025-10-13 21:01

Whoever is buying any tesla after musk’s fascist salute is a looser in my book.

musschrott 2025-10-13 21:11

3rd quarter has 91 days. That's 131,040 minutes, so a sucker born every 24.3 minutes.

jaimi_wanders 2025-10-13 21:16

Right-wing publishers and authors would do that with their own books to drive sales rankings up, then give them away as swag.

Gildardo1583 2025-10-13 21:21

And solar city.

Bobinss 2025-10-13 21:30

If it's good enough for Chad Powers, it's good enough for me. When they came up with Chad Power's character, he's an anti-hero, or maybe even a full on dick. To drive the point home, the writers decided that Chad drives a Cybertruck.

Opcn 2025-10-13 21:31

Elon has only a 4.11% share of the sucker market.

th3bigfatj 2025-10-13 21:40

No Tesla investor can ever say in the future that they were tricked, or they didn't know they were supporting a white nationalist or that they had no warnings that tesla was going to one day collapse because it was a complete house of cards. Even elon said it was a zero was a car company ("tesla is a zero without FSD") Since then he's moved on to other stock pumps but the truth is very clear.

totpot 2025-10-13 21:55

There is one in a nearby office parking lot. They got an early one, then it disappeared for 3 months, then came back for 2 months, then disappeared for 4 months, then reappeared. A sane person would have lemon lawed that thing.

WildFlowLing 2025-10-13 21:59

This behavior along with the Canada fiasco earlier this year where the seemed to perhaps be committing fraud makes me not trust ANY of teslas self reported data on deliveries and financials. Hell they’ve been doing weird things with claiming unrealized bitcoin gains and then, to my non-accountant understanding, NOT showing unrealized bitcoin losses.

yojimbo_beta 2025-10-13 22:21

Just wait until winter when the roads ice over and have to be salted. Like most species of amphibian, CyberTrucks cannot tolerate salt. And like with most species of amphibian, it completely destroys their skin

RocketLabBeatsSpaceX 2025-10-13 22:27

When I had my Rivian I towed a cybertruck out of the mud. It was super stuck however a Honda civic could get through it which was the icing on the cake to witness that. The truck needed to be towed after, it wouldn’t drive after being pulled out. It’s a really shitty vehicle. I would recommend a ford exploder over a cybertruck

dead_ed 2025-10-14 01:16

The Ford Edsel is the poster child for automotive flops as it only sold ~116,000 units over three model years before being axed. Sounds like the Cybertruck may take the award.

GuyWithPants 2025-10-14 01:32

Edsel was strictly speaking a marque, not a single model. The original 1958 lineup had six models based on three bodies shared with Ford or Mercury models. Granted there’s far fewer car models and marques than there were back then but let’s remember it was a just a hundred thousand cars across *twelve* annual models total.

TheBlackUnicorn 2025-10-14 01:45

And they're always driving alone too.

TheBlackUnicorn 2025-10-14 01:54

> Even elon said it was a zero was a car company ("tesla is a zero without FSD") This was such an unforced error too because at the time he said this we were on like year 8 of "FSD next year". If he had said this in 2014 or even 2017 it would have been a bold statement about an exciting future product, but he said it in 2022, after it was clear to anyone paying attention that Tesla would never ever achieve FSD.

art-is-t 2025-10-14 02:25

dead_ed 2025-10-14 03:26

Good point. I wonder how much of that was badge engineering, as in distinctive models under the name. Could be interesting as the Cybertruck doesn't share a platform with anything AFAIK. Oh well.

Jumper_Connect 2025-10-14 03:39

I want you to read that oral history too!

Blue_HyperGiant 2025-10-14 03:45

I always thought it was an excuse to order stainless in bulk and make it affordable for SpaceX to get bundled deals on the raw material.

Normal-Selection1537 2025-10-14 06:05

49% of Model 3s failed their mandatory 4 year first inspection in Finland, mostly due to suspension issues. The new cheaper models use even cheaper suspension.

SisterOfBattIe 2025-10-14 06:25

I'll enjoy the popcorn once crime is illegal again and Tesla Enron goes belly up. I predict Musk on the way out will release an OTA update that BRICKS every Tesla on the road!

doalwa 2025-10-14 08:25

Are there aftermarket controllers for the motors? I can't wait to see this at the junkshop.

Acceptable-Rope6000 2025-10-14 11:06

No I’d say it’s that the cyber truck is just bad design. Ford and Rivian came out sooner at lower costs with better specs, more usable features. The cheapest Cybertruck is $82k. Rivian has a $70k R1T, $77k for range and features similar to the Cybertruck, GM offers models with 410 miles of range for 71k. The Lightning starts at $63k with the one that stacks up against the CT starts at $66k. At the same price as the Cybertruck you get massaging seats. Lack of usable bed, lack of bed access lack of in cabin storage plus higher cost and worse specs result in people not choosing the Cybertruck. It’s just a bad truck at too high a price. Also if you want a diffrent color you got to pay a lot to wrap it.

That-Whereas3367 2025-10-14 11:12

It was bad by Ford standards. De Soto sold a mere 15,556 cars in 1958.

It's a "round-tripping" scheme, only instead of Tesla selling the vehicles to themselves, they're selling them to other companies in Musk's conglomerate. Musk's conglomerate selling products to itself is pretty par for the course... Tesla's been selling cars to another Musk company... the Boring company... which claims to use "SpaceX technology"... (oooOOOOoo) Now we're finding out Tesla is selling loads of unsold vehicles to SpaceX and xAI... companies that have loads of cash because their share prices are obscenely overinflated... just like Tesla. xAI generates revenues primarily through sales to Twitter and now to Tesla. Then xAI bought Twitter, a company that was suddenly and miraculously re-valued to the value Musk over paid for it... go figure... xAI bought loads of battery storage from Tesla, but certainly not enough to account for the lion's share of Tesla's quarterly battery storage sales. Does anyone know where all of Tesla's mass capacity of battery storage is being sold or installed? The vast amounts they're selling should be coming from huge projects that generate headlines on a quarterly basis. SpaceX meanwhile primarily launches rockets for themselves... for Starlink satellites... all while every day, more and more satellites fall out of orbit.

readit145 2025-10-14 20:10

I was joking but Tesla actually used to throw all their over stock in random lots and fields until people started blowing up their spot online. It was so the production numbers could be high and investors to assume sales were up. Since in the beginning they used to make cars to order and never said anything when they stopped doing that.

Computers_and_cats 2025-10-14 20:42

That is pretty funny. If I understood correctly my local service center has 4 of them as loaners.

Now that there just a government work truck the novelty is gone. Those pompous people that drove/ drive them around with there nose stuck up in the air are now just a person driving just another work truck.

idcenoughforthisname 2025-10-15 01:21

He should buy every SpaceX employee one. The cost would be covered from the stock price increase as a result of the added revenue. 13,000 SpaceX employees x $60,000 per truck = $780M. Tesla would only need to go up $2 (for Elons share to cover the cost) and the purchase would have paid for itself for Elon.

why not give a cybertrukk a NOT SEE salute?

MonsieurReynard 2025-10-17 01:08

R1T has the lowest sales of any pickup truck on the market. They’ve sold a total of 5700 this year. “Successful” it is not, and it’s a mid-sized truck so it’s competition is Ranger/Colorado/Tacoma, not CT or F-150 or Silverado. Yeah a $90k midsized lifestyle truck with no commercial ambitions seems like a niche market. And it is. Ford has sold 23k F-150 Lightnings so far this year, and that’s the EV pickup class leader. CT is at 16k, about even with the Sierra/Silverado. Of course ford has sold like 600k gasoline and diesel F series trucks this year. EV trucks are still a tiny niche market.

MonsieurReynard 2025-10-17 01:13

Except it objectively sucks as a work truck.

mar4c 2025-10-17 01:13

The cybertruck is a marketplace flop all things considered. I just get irritated when the also-weak R1T is juxtaposed as a success.

MonsieurReynard 2025-10-17 01:51

I’m just saying they aren’t class competitors anyway.

Knighthonor 2025-10-18 21:55

Its the price. We can't afford it.

ComprehensiveFault88 2025-10-20 20:02

Yet, the fascist boy-wonder wants a trillion dollar pay package. Even these minuscule sales numbers are fraudulent, as he is selling the cars to other Musk owned entities. When the Trump- trade-tariff fiasco eventually ends, the better built and cheaper Chinese EVs are going to flood the market, as they have done in Europe. This boy is toast, but the losers will be the shareholders, not him, as he will walk away with hundreds of billions of dollars.

Reanimator11 2025-10-20 23:20

The Edsel was sold in the late 50s, when the U.S. population was half of what it is today. Tesla will never sell close to as many Cybertrucks as Ford sold Edsels. Cybertruck is the biggest automotive failure by a very wide margin.

Reanimator11 2025-10-20 23:29

I'm very surprised that they sold any Cybertrucks at all. What kind of fool would buy one now that the novelty factor is gone? Or are all these "sales" just Elon buying the rejected POS from himself?

InvestThoughtfully 2025-10-23 15:08

With this volume is it likely that they will discontinue this truck?

InvestThoughtfully 2025-10-23 15:10

Agree, if Musk hadn't so bullheaded about design and just brought out a more conventional design truck built on the Y platform it would have likely blown off the shelves.

bigninjapimp 2025-10-23 23:32

I was just working at the Electrify expo, almost every die hard EV fan said they hated the Cyber Truck and said it rattled when you drove it. I only met one person out 50 who liked it.
