Marques Brownlee is probably the biggest tech reviewer on YouTube. He reserved a roadster 8 years ago and finally cancelled it. Not only did Ted;a tell him they're keeping the $5k deposit, even though they haven't delivered the product in 8 year, but he had to actively hunt down how to get the refund for the product since they don't make it clear. They did the math if he put that $50k in Tesla stock he'd be up $700k right now. If that's not a hilarious showcase of this company making money hands over fist and gaining insane valuations off of delivering nothing idk what is.

It took him this long to cancel it? What the fuck Marques

I mean it's Elon. Dance wuth the devil u gunna get burned

sjgokou 2025-09-28 08:37

Not only that but he lost money due to inflation. I’m surprised Tesla hasn’t been sued. 8 years is extremely excessive.

LeftOfTheOptimist 2025-09-28 08:38

The fact that Elon did his salute in January and Marques still was holding onto this? Like WTF. I've lost mad respect for him

herewego199209 2025-09-28 08:40

The roadster situation and the FSD situation are two things where I cannot understand why there hasn't been class action lawsuits about it, especially FSD. I know Tesla owners legitimately no bullshit on their third Tesla and that bitch still can't drive itself or do the shit Elon promised 10 years ago. The smartest thing they possibly did was make it a subscription service option now because it makes people less pissed knowing their FSD payment of like 8 grand doesn't carry over to their next Tesla.

REOreddit 2025-09-28 08:51

He has earned way more than $5K by making positive videos about Tesla. Zero sympathy from me.

QuintaEtapa 2025-09-28 08:54

Wasn’t he swooning over the Cybertruck as well when it came out?

hobbbis 2025-09-28 09:05

The stock is the product, until the day its not, then it will be a disaster

earth-calling-karma 2025-09-28 09:09

Not too clever to drop 50k on a vaporware in the first place - a classic tech debacle, which MB is prone to.

Tesla's main product IS the stock.

someguytwo 2025-09-28 09:55

Eight years ago the Yangwang U9 wasn't even on the drawing board and it probably is better than the roadster.

Krieg 2025-09-28 10:52

For long time he was a Tesla and Elon glazer, it seems he is not anymore but he is now keeping low profile and trying not to piss him off.

flying_butt_fucker 2025-09-28 11:09

Musk is a bit litigious isn’t he?

Automatic_Soil9814 2025-09-28 11:22

To be fair, reviewing tech and tech heavy vehicles is his actual job. i’m not saying he’s a great guy. I don’t know. But there is a big difference between somebody buying a vehicle for personal use and somebody buying one so that they can review it to do their job.

MarchMurky8649 2025-09-28 11:37

Given he very publicly said "we're making it now" I would have thought it straightforward to get the deposit back. Here in the UK I would be able to use what is known as the small claims procedure. I'd write a letter to Tesla asking for the $5k, saying unless you send it to me within two weeks I will make a civil claim. If they failed to refund it I pay c. $200 to the court, no need for representation, and if they still failed to pay I attend a hearing, and I imagine the court would agree they have to repay the $5k. If Tesla still refuse to pay after that the next step is to start procedures to have them declared bankrupt. By default, if they fail to pay when a court has ordered them to do so, that is automatic. Tesla would be very foolish to continue to fail to pay at this point. I could probably get expensive lawyers to do all this bit on what is called a conditional fee basis, as whatever happened the money would be paid, plus my costs so I'd be $5k up at the end of it all. Is it so much more difficult in the US? Maybe Marques cannot be bothered over $5k? Am I missing something? I expect there are some terms and conditions very biased towards Tesla, but unless they explicitly stated words to the effect that Elon's "we're making it now" statement was a lie, and that they reserve the right to fail to make a single car for decades, and the deposits are non-returnable in any case, would a US court really side with Tesla over this?

KareemPie81 2025-09-28 11:42

Ambitious5uppository 2025-09-28 11:57

And for considerably less we have the Cyberster, which is on sale and popular, which is as much of a Roadster anyone really needs. There is no way the Roadster is 3x the car of the Cyberster.

moderatefairgood 2025-09-28 12:44

Oh no! Anyway...

Unplugthecar 2025-09-28 12:51

Probably would have been better off using it as a down payment towards a cybertruck. /s

missionalbatrossy 2025-09-28 12:55

Wow!!

Fedelm 2025-09-28 13:06

Genuine question - does he buy all the vehicles he reviews? I don't see how he makes a living if he has to buy them all.

ascaria 2025-09-28 13:08

And apparently the MG actually drives hilariously well.

bpaul83 2025-09-28 13:20

It’s even worse in the UK where FSD has basically only meant the car will automatically stop at a traffic light. You could have specced it on a lease 5 years ago, paid the full amount on Elon’s promise the release was imminent, and seen zero benefit for the entire lifetime of the lease.

AnalysisOld4729 2025-09-28 13:22

They'd be legit write offs. Anything past that is speculation on my part. Don't know the guy's personal finance situation.

Automatic_Soil9814 2025-09-28 13:33

Good question. I think we can be confident that he does not buy the vehicles he reviews. However the Tesla roadster would be completely different. It’s highly controversial and would generate a ton of views. It also might be extremely hard to get a hold of and have a good rehab value so the best way for him to get an early review would be to buy one, or review it, and then potentially sell it.

CloudyofThought 2025-09-28 13:46

That dude is a tool.

I-baLL 2025-09-28 13:52

They'd be write-offs on his taxes but he still has to make enough money that the taxes on them will be big enough so that the write-offs make sense. If you're only paying 50k in taxes and you need to write off 75k in purchases then you are losing 25k since you don't have enough taxes to write off against

jregovic 2025-09-28 13:54

Even 8 years ago it should have been obvious that Tesla were going to fail to deliver anything meaningful. And they haven’t since. Cybertruck was “delivered”, but nothing like the product promised, except for the stupid design. The semi truck is a nothing burger. fSD doesn’t exist. If Marques Brownlee were really a sharp reviewer, he’d have skipped reserving a Roadster because it wasn’t going to be built. The ONLY thing Tesla and Musk have delivered are insane valuations. There is no Tesla vehicle that is the top of its class. If Marquess Brownlee couldn’t see that, then he is just a reviewer of things out in front of him.

Syscrush 2025-09-28 14:00

I don't understand why there haven't been criminal prosecutions for that shit! Defrauding customers AND investors, and being rewarded for it is just sickening.

LeftOfTheOptimist 2025-09-28 14:37

I know what his YouTube channel is about. He gets to decide what he wants to review. Continuing to support Musk is so tone deaf for Marques. Boohoo about his 5k. He'll financially recover from that.

Fedelm 2025-09-28 14:37

So he bought it because he wanted it and also reviewed it.

VincibleAndy 2025-09-28 14:51

yolohiggins 2025-09-28 14:53

MKBHQ is the biggest youtube review shill. Why do you even watch him?

Fedelm 2025-09-28 14:53

Yeah, it seemed very unlikely to me that he bought it because he needed to in order to review it. Thanks!

tienzing 2025-09-28 15:02

Forget just inflation, if you’d put that $50k in TSLA 8yrs ago, you’d have a cool $1M now!

mrpopenfresh 2025-09-28 15:13

Free loans, they’ve been doing it forever.

huuaaang 2025-09-28 15:18

Putting down 50k on a car that doesn’t exist was stupid in the first place. I have no sympathy for the rich sucker who does this. If he can get a court to award him a full refund with interest good for him but I don’t care.

EngineerBoy00 2025-09-28 15:20

I found Marques Brownlee mildly interesting until: - it became patently obvious he was a Tesla shill/apologist - he became a board member, investor, and creative partner at [Ridge](https://fortune.com/2024/02/22/marques-brownlee-youtube-at-accessories-company-ridge/) Now I skip him.

frackthestupids 2025-09-28 15:37

Not sure you are aware, current administration favors those tactics.

Potential_Limit_9123 2025-09-28 15:44

It would cost way more than $5,000 to go into court. Not my area of law, but I think he would at least get his 5k back if he went to court. But he could have "signed" a document saying he couldn't get his 5k back.

EnvironmentalClue218 2025-09-28 15:54

Wouldn’t surprise me if he put out a statement soon talking about the “upcoming next years Roadster” to freeze the deposits (the sycophants will bite hard) and maybe get some new ones. Of course it will always be just a few more quarters in coming.

Iliyan61 2025-09-28 16:05

the post says youd have 700k, calculator says it would be 750ish [https://finlo.io/stock-calculator/TSLA](https://finlo.io/stock-calculator/TSLA)

MarchMurky8649 2025-09-28 16:06

Almost every state has a smalls claims procedure up to at least $5k [as far as I can see](https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/small-claims-suits-how-much-30031.html) \- I am pretty sure Marques could deploy that without having to lay out more than a couple of hundred bucks.

Quirky_Tradition_806 2025-09-28 16:27

I'd have thought that he was one of the early YouTube influencers who qualified for the "free" roadster. No?

thebaldfox 2025-09-28 16:29

Bullish!!!!!!!

herewego199209 2025-09-28 16:59

He's basically the Mr. Beast of tech YouTubers. He could do it, but I doubt it. He likely gets loaners like the other big guys like Kelly Blue Book, Redline Reviews, etc. He's bigger than them so he likely gets priority, though.

herewego199209 2025-09-28 17:00

It's also the speed at which he could get one. He probably thought it would be faster to get one faster if he bought it than tif he got a loaner. I believe the cyber truck first depositors got their cybertrucks before actual reviewers if I can remember. Not sure about model 3 or Y users.

herewego199209 2025-09-28 17:02

That's true but then again I never thought the Cybertruck was gonna be made, either and they made it no matter how ugly and dangerous that shit is. I just thought there was no way anyone was going to approve the production for that car and the United States government did anyway so I was foolish to begin with.

Syscrush 2025-09-28 17:08

He's been doing this shit literally since the Obama administration. If Biden's SEC and DOJ had been on the case, he would have been in jail instead of fuckin' up the 2024 election.

Intrepid_Cap1242 2025-09-28 18:14

Whether or not they're making it is irrelevant. It'll be Cybertruck quality

cute_bark 2025-09-28 18:18

how hard is it for a car company to release a car product as advertised? are they stupid?

TOPLEFT404 2025-09-28 18:19

That’s because Elon is still butt hurt for him swapping his cybertruck with a Rivian and instantly unfollowed him on Twitter. I got my issues with MKBHD but he was real on this one, especially after semi glazing him back in 2018 with the plant tour (which ended up being free advertisement for Tesla on top of all the cars he reviewed.) Since he’s back in good graces with Trump he will probably have him investigated.

herewego199209 2025-09-28 18:28

I mean the Rivian is legitimately just lightyears better than the Cybertruck in every way imo outside of maybe the auto pilot, but I haven't tried Vivian's newest software so I can't comment on that. I've heard as well the Lucid sedan and SUV are fucking lightyears better than the Model S and X. I'm not a rich man to upgrade to those cars as of yet lol. But if they made a 40k to 50k competitor to the model Y I would be very interesting. But Elon would have to be an idiot to not understand why journalists would rather switch over.

CRXCRZ 2025-09-28 18:54

No, it's because they are liars, and can't meet the product specs.

casualseer366 2025-09-28 18:54

I'm surprised no one has even mentioned the fact that he had two Tesla Roadster reservations, he's still on the list to get one of the first 1000 Roadsters to get released (if it ever happens) even after he canceled one of his reservations.

Accomplished_Knee_17 2025-09-28 19:49

cseckshun 2025-09-28 20:29

Post says you would be UP by about $700k so around $750k total cashing out makes sense, the original $50k wouldn’t be profit, it would be the original investment.

Automatic_Soil9814 2025-09-28 22:34

You seem to be either looking for reasons to be upset at the guy or you don’t really understand how YouTube videos work. For his video to be successful, he has to have one of the first reviews of the Tesla Roadster. If that means getting on the waitlist early to be one of the first people who can get them, that’s worth a lot of money to him. Way more than the value of the car. If you think he could just “rent” one, that demonstrates a huge misunderstanding of how this whole thing works. By the time one of these is available for rent, many other videos will have already been posted. It’s not a realistic option for his profession. The fact that he’s on the waitlist tells us nothing about whether he wants to own one of these cars. All we know is that he wants to be one of the first to review it. Everything else is speculation.

dovlomir 2025-09-29 12:06

It took you this long? What did it for me was when he filmed himself driving 100Mph in a 35Mph children's area, posted it but blurred out just one speedometer instead of both (which is how he was caught *and* which showed he knew what he was doing the whole time) and then trimmed that part of the video out instead of taking accountability when getting called out *edit: typo*

drillbit56 2025-09-29 12:30

The Roadster is long dormant and forgotten. It would be hopelessly out of trend if they introduced it. A Tesla ‘supercar’ does not fit the stagnant brand. How they held these deposits for eight years is unethical.

Enough-Meaning1514 2025-09-29 14:05

Not sure why Tesla should be sued. Elon said in the past that this is how you sponsor the development of Tesla cars. You are basically an investor. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Same with FSD. Anyone fool enough to pay for the FSD is basically sponsoring the company.

rjcarr 2025-09-29 14:33

He said his deposit got him 1/2 off the car somehow (he might have explained it, but I forget the details). He also said he put all his referral credits toward a second one.  So he was getting two for the price of 1/2.

There's a hilarious video on YouTube from this guy called bearded Tesla where he talks shit about Tesla detractors in the beginning of the video and he stated he was going to drive from California to Jacksonville, Florida using FSD to prove the haters wrong. Guess what happens during PART 1 of the video at the end? He runs ver an object on the highway that FSD didn't detect and the idiot did not want to disengage FSD for whatever reason to avoid it. They are so far from fully autonomous vehicles it's not even funny. Don't get me wrong as someone with certain anxiety driving sometimes, it feels good to go into FSD and go on a 70 MPH or sometimes 80 MPH road and just have FSD drive me so I can relax. But I used it mainly as an advanced cruise control type of deal. I think to your main point I think Tesla is just poorly ran. The Model Y honestly was their first just knock it out the park item from start to finish and they followed it up with bullshit robotaxi nonsense, a cybertruck that's worth next to nothing and sells nothing, and a roadster that doesn't exist. They could've easily just kept stacking cash and made a sub compact SUV and a off road vehicle to increase their models and add even more price and vehicle variety to their lineup and Elon just meme'd his way to pumping the stock instead.

TheRealStorey 2025-10-01 13:19
