Car sales in Europe: Which brands are rising and falling?

Far_Addition1210 | 2025-09-12 10:27 | 55 views

[Tesla’s car sales in Europe](https://www.euronews.com/business/2025/08/28/tesla-sales-down-by-40-in-europe-while-chinese-byd-triples-its-sales) fell 40.2% year-on-year, cutting its market share to 0.7% from 1.3%. Meanwhile, China’s BYD more than [tripled](https://www.euronews.com/business/2025/08/28/tesla-sales-down-by-40-in-europe-while-chinese-byd-triples-its-sales) its sales, reaching 1.2% of the market and overtaking Tesla for the first time in the region. [German brands](https://www.euronews.com/business/2025/07/30/mercedes-predicts-360mn-hit-from-us-tariff-turmoil-and-china-slowdown) are among the automakers most exposed to protectionist trade policies, feeling the squeeze as higher tariffs already drive up costs across the supply chain.

Another pro-chinese Article totally ignoring the strong sales increase from companies like Ford, Skoda, VW, all adding more market share than BYD. Or the decline of chinese-owned MG, Volvo and Smart.

Tesla stock should be through the roof today on this news

winfredjj 2025-09-12 11:57

still high in my opinion. anything more than 0 should be considered high

North-Outside-5815 2025-09-12 13:31

Yup. German EVs are doing well, and French ones aren’t doing badly either.

ArQ7777 2025-09-12 14:03

Elon Musk no longer cares because Tesla is now a Robotaxi and Optimus company. No longer a car company.

goranlepuz 2025-09-12 14:12

What the fuck is this incessant pitting of Tesla versus the BYD?! The reality is that both are utterly minor players, as evidenced by a market share under 2 percent. And in the EV world alone, European makers are selling several times more, if not an order of magnitude more, than either.

rnc_turbo 2025-09-12 14:31

BYD are making a profit on their vehicles as I understand it, many Eu makers aren't.

Buddycat350 2025-09-12 16:59

I didn't check sales, but I am seeing more and more Renault R5 on the roads. And compact cars like this might be able to find a comfortable market niche for themselves. Some people are getting tired of cars getting bigger, be it EV, internal combustion or PHEV.

The_Jack_of_Spades 2025-09-12 19:30

The Renault 5 became the 3rd best-selling EV in Europe YTD in July https://cleantechnica.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/2025-07-Europe-Top-20-YTD-EV-Models-January-July-scaled.png

Buddycat350 2025-09-12 19:36

Well, as a Frenchie, cocorico then! Nice to see some affordable EV compacts on the roads.

North-Outside-5815 2025-09-12 20:27

The updated Citroën ë-C4 lineup looks good too (some in my city)

Buddycat350 2025-09-12 21:30

Didn't notice any yet, but it looks nice enough. I wouldn't be surprised if more popped up once some Tesla's leases are ending.

Love me those headlines with 'LOOK AT THE BYD GAINS IN EUROPE, THEYRE TAKING OVER'. yeah well, its easy to have giant growth when they sold very little last year. They only started in Europe two years ago really which imo is already a bit late, MG had already been in Europe two years prior and therefore been more successful, although ofc they are currently stagnating in Europe, even in a small decline as you said. BYD so far hasnt been too successful in Europe. Yes theyre flooding the market but thats not necessarily a recipe for long term success. They made themselves the goal of selling 50k cars in Germany this year and by the end of july it was about 7,5k. Other than BYD, none of the Chinese are really in a good position. Nio also tried as early as MG and failed miserably so far. And the elephant in the room ofc is that a lot of BYD gains are thanks to them starting to sell hybrids and not pure EVs, so when you see these statistics, youve got to keep in mind wether its an EV exclusive or all car statistic

> and French ones aren’t doing badly either. That really is a surprise given the mess Stellantis is in.

Companys reputation is now built on unicorn farts.

rnc_turbo 2025-09-14 12:41

Well there's a possibility of that but there hasn't any been found yet, right. Eu manufacturers running at a loss is indesputable.

rnc_turbo 2025-09-14 12:52

> And in the EV world alone, European makers are selling several times more, if not an order of magnitude more, than either. BYD hovering around the edge of the top ten in Europe. Which is news worthy as they've come from nothing and only sell BEV. Like Tesla. https://www.jato.com/resources/media-and-press-releases/chinese-car-brands-continue-their-ascent-outselling-mercedes-in-june-and-ford-in-h1

Agreed!

goranlepuz 2025-09-14 13:36

>Which is news worthy as they've come from nothing and only sell BEV. Like Tesla. They sell hybrids and plug-in hybrids as well. It could be that the majority of their sales are BEVs...? But still... Edit: as for "newsworthy", how is it that either Tesla, the bona fine BEV company and the Chinese, the bona fide BEV market leader, both being several times behind the Europeans, is *not* newsworthy?! Because here in Europe, it is rather obvious that Tesla is **done**. A mighty upstart that BYD is, will surpass it, whatever else happens.

Lonyo 2025-09-14 14:13

It is

Lonyo 2025-09-14 14:14

Overtaking Tesla is not just "high% from a low base", especially when they are now nearly as high as Tesla was before their drop

rnc_turbo 2025-09-14 15:40

Apologies, BYD currently sell a PHEV in Europe. Not sure who or what you're getting so agitated about in relation to a news article.

goranlepuz 2025-09-14 16:24

>Not sure who or what you're getting so agitated about in relation to a news article. Ehhh... "Fed up" is more like it. Time after time, I see these "BYD vs Tesla in Europe" articles, while both are minor EV players (Tesla became one and BYD didn't hit mainstream yet). If there is "X vs Y in Europe", it's not them.

North-Outside-5815 2025-09-15 08:26

Yup, poor Citroën and Peogeot ended up in a weird team.

atpplk 2025-09-15 12:16

I mean, they are the root cause. Peugeot is kind of leading Stellantis and they equipped Puretech on all vehicles from all brands.

North-Outside-5815 2025-09-15 15:58

Citroën is a historic and innovative automaker. I feel Stellantis is hampering them.
