Tesla Offers Unprecedented $1 Trillion Pay Package to Elon Musk

bloomberg | 2025-09-05 10:42 | 890 views

*From Bloomberg News reporter Dana Hull:* Tesla proposed a new compensation agreement for Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk potentially valued at about $1 trillion, a massive package without precedent in corporate America. The long-awaited proposal, designed to incentivize Musk to lead Tesla for years to come, sets a series of ambitious benchmarks he must meet to earn the full payout, including expanding Tesla’s robotaxi business and growing the company’s market value to at least $8.5 trillion from around $1 trillion today. The plan spans 10 years.

Ambivalent about this I both want him to drive Tesla to the ground, but also i don’t think he should get money out of it

In any other company the stock would tank 50% on this news. In a sane world the SEC/FBI would be raiding their offices and all the homes of the board members and everyone would be getting interviewed and offered deals to spill the beans. Anyone investing in Tesla/Musk at this point deserves to lose all their money. You know this guy is Bernie Madoff on steroids.

DARKSTAIN 2025-09-05 10:51

How is this possible? What is going on that i don't understand. I thought Tesla was tanking worldwide. They want to reward him for that?

EasyE1979 2025-09-05 10:53

That's more money than tesla has ever made since it's creation. The board is crazy.

Public-Guidance-9560 2025-09-05 10:54

Jeep_finance 2025-09-05 11:06

Use to be a fan. Am in tech and wanted wife to drive a Tesla (I need a truck to tow boat / jeep). That ship sailed. The product of Tesla is the stock. Everything they do is just to hype up the stock. Fuck Elon.

dsmith422 2025-09-05 11:15

Tesla since its founding has made roughly $90 billion in total profit across the years 2010-2025.

According to this article, it’s as much as its entire current market cap.

soffpotatisen 2025-09-05 11:19

They really are doing everything they can do pump this stock. I'm guessing the ideas behind this is that idiots will see the number 8.5 trillions, and think that "Ooh! Insiders think Tesla will be worth *8.5 trillions or more* in 10 years! That's like 25% increase per year! I knew it Tesla is a good investment!!1" or some shit like that.

Zorkmid123 2025-09-05 11:24

The only job the board has is figuring out how to pay Elon as much as possible.

Sea-Celebration2429 2025-09-05 11:26

What does baggies think about this?

Lopsided_Quarter_931 2025-09-05 11:27

They stay with the tradition of paying the CEO a multiple of what they ever gonna earn. Very normal things.

IncarceratedScarface 2025-09-05 11:28

If my math is correct, Tesla would need to grow at about a rate of 75% every year for the next ten years. Which, isn’t impossible, but I find very unlikely considering its growth since 2020. Edit: I should have said “750% over the next ten years” instead.

Any_Particular8892 2025-09-05 11:30

Wooden-Broccoli-7247 2025-09-05 11:38

And somehow the stock will go up 25% on the news that investors will get diluted by 50%. Clearly Elon has found a way to keep the stock price artificially high. He will somehow figure out a way to hit all these goals beings they will only revolve around the stock price. They will never revolve around metrics like delivered cars or profit.

ObviouslyJoking 2025-09-05 11:38

Wasn’t his last pay deal was also more than the company’s lifetime profits.

HesterMoffett 2025-09-05 11:39

They just had their steepest quarterly revenue drop in over a decade. What a joke. Anyone who continues investing in this company deserves whatever.

VictimOfGoodTiming 2025-09-05 11:40

Engunnear 2025-09-05 11:40

Profit or revenue?

Dommccabe 2025-09-05 11:43

Individual-Nebula927 2025-09-05 11:49

For comparison, in 2024 GM had an annual profit of $23.4 billion. Tesla does not make much money, and has not been profitable for the majority of its existence.

ScoobyGDSTi 2025-09-05 12:01

You mean it's more money than Tesla have ever received in government handouts and subsidies.

ILikeCutePuppies 2025-09-05 12:01

How did you calculate 50%.. Isn't it 12%. 12% is still a huge amount of dilution but can you explain how you got to 50%?

tripping_on_phonics 2025-09-05 12:02

It kind of feels like they see the way the winds are blowing and are trying to cash out before their house of cards collapses.

ScoobyGDSTi 2025-09-05 12:02

Take away carbon credits and government subsidies, the truth is they've lost money.

ILikeCutePuppies 2025-09-05 12:03

I don't think the share holders care since 8.5 trillion is still a ways off. If it hits 8.5 trillion they would be multiples more wealthy.

meshreplacer 2025-09-05 12:05

EasyE1979 2025-09-05 12:06

Based on his performance in the past years he should be replaced but they are giving him a raise... But what do I know I'm retarded?

TobyOrNotTobyEU 2025-09-05 12:06

He shouldn't need to be paid this much. He already owns a ton of stock that will appreciate in value if he reaches the target. He doesn't need another compensation package.

ttkk1248 2025-09-05 12:07

Interesting. Tesla market cap looks to be only $1 Trillion. That is 100% of company worth in the stock marker valuation.

tokyoduck 2025-09-05 12:08

It doesnt have that money to pay him. Total fraud of a company.

ObservationalHumor 2025-09-05 12:10

I don't know where you're getting that number or how you're calculating but it's definitely wrong for GAAP earnings. They weren't profitable at all on an annual basis until 2020 and since then they've made $40B through 2024 and a piddly $1.5B thus far this year. Of that number around $5B was just a tax credit value recognition too and not really representative of operational earnings. Using Tesla's own 'adjusted earnings' metric that completely ignores their very substantial stock based compensation expense you could maybe bump that up another $20B but it'd still be well short of $90B.

Sir-Hingus 2025-09-05 12:10

The levels of dumb are so off the chart. They deserve each other

holchansg 2025-09-05 12:10

Only **19** countries have more GDP than this. He would be on par with Saudi Arabia. Capable of buying hallf of Brazil or Canada.

GreatCaesarGhost 2025-09-05 12:10

This will just incentivize more smoke and mirrors on his part. It’s a sick joke that Tesla’s slogan is about helping the world transition to clean energy, when the true goal is to just pump the stock price and have Musk and his family/friends - who clearly don’t take sustainability seriously - pocket all of the gains.

[deleted] 2025-09-05 12:11

That was my first thought

ObservationalHumor 2025-09-05 12:11

tripping_on_phonics 2025-09-05 12:20

As I understand the Tesla board of directors is stuffed with his cronies and family members, who I’m sure are also getting a payout (albeit smaller than Elon). They’re sacrificing their shareholders and the financial health of the company to enrich themselves.

And the scam goes on... Unbelievable. I hope Tesla dies some day soon.

SolutionWarm6576 2025-09-05 12:26

Probably why the stock is being artificially pumped pre-market. To get the shareholders onboard. Thought there also was a class action lawsuit from the shareholders.

bazookateeth 2025-09-05 12:28

Besides grotesquely destroying its brand value through partisanship and deliberate political chicanery? Not a whole lot..

SolutionWarm6576 2025-09-05 12:28

Does this compensation and pay package affect their overall margin. If it does, that’s a big hit to that.

Traditional-Fox-1597 2025-09-05 12:29

Is this some kind of out-of-season April Fool's joke?

Runningmad45 2025-09-05 12:29

The targets are most probably unreachable save for many miracles which means it is in the boards beast interest to keep the share price as inflated as possible for as long as possible. Elon is clearly selling a good game and being given the ultimate incentive - To become a Trillionaire.

oboshoe 2025-09-05 12:30

BrewAllTheThings 2025-09-05 12:32

Not bad for a part time gig. It always makes me giggle when i see something about how it’s important to keep Musk around. Best thing could happen to Tesla is for him to rid off into the sunset.

luv2block 2025-09-05 12:34

The only thing keeping them alive is that the gov tariffs Chinese EV's so much that no one can buy them. The minute you lift those tariffs, China EVs flood America and Tesla dies within a year. Tesla is basically a state-protected company.

Top_Currency_3977 2025-09-05 12:34

They are paid generous board fees to be his friends.

ConkerPrime 2025-09-05 12:35

Helps to own the board. Shareholders should sue to block but most are Musk fanboys. Of note: Only two companies reached a worth $4 trillion - Microsoft and nVidea. Yet somehow Musk is worth 1/4 of them despite literally all aspects of Tesla on the decline and no indication they have a plan to fix that besides robot demos that require puppet masters to pull off and self driving cars that need drivers.

Traditional-Fox-1597 2025-09-05 12:35

We don't do that here anymore. We're pricing in concepts of profits.

Capable-Limit5249 2025-09-05 12:37

The ridiculous part to me is that Tesla *could* be great, and incredibly valuable (in real terms). All that needs to happen is ditch fElon and bring in an actual business leader; someone with plenty of experience running a company like this and a history of wise decision making. Focus on not cutting corners on QC, emphasizing safety, and listening to customer feedback, and more importantly, the feedback of their own employees/experts. An end to designing on the whim of a literal madman. I think people would absolutely flock to a Tesla under better ownership.

Wooden-Broccoli-7247 2025-09-05 12:56

I put 0 thought in it and threw out a number. Figured I’d keep things in the same realm as Teslas stock price. And a 12% dilution might as well be 50, lol. That’s crazy and anyone that owns that stock at this point is owning it while being completely detached from reality and factual numbers anyways.

Lacrewpandora 2025-09-05 12:59

Tesla is worth $1T today. In 10 years, if the company grows in value to $8.5T, Musk's compensation would be $1T. So he'd get about 15% of the upside for his job as CEO. BTW, if the company is worth $1T in 10 years, he gets nothing. It's not a terrible idea.

Nopengnogain 2025-09-05 13:31

Defiant_Selection_91 2025-09-05 13:32

ILikeCutePuppies 2025-09-05 13:33

Well with these 50% tarrifs, lol. However, no inflation is like 2-3% a year on average so about 34.4% over 10 years not 800% (700% with dilution). I don't even think tarrifs will make it 800% high in 10 years. Imagine buying a home now for 1 million and it being worth 8 million in 10 years.

It’s funny you say that bc I only recently realized this is an actual business method. The high rise I work in is largely empty, but they won’t lower rents bc they want to tell shareholders they are getting top dollar rents. At some point, doesn’t it have to translate to actual dollars, though? Capitalism is so fucked.

Bingo. They're counting on the market performance of TSLA to keep all of them immune from prosecution.

[Actual photo of Tesla's board](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fxx2pooaeryf11.jpg) The scale of the nonsense here should make any serious investor understand that there is nobody competent or honest at the helm, that this is purely a way to pump the stock before it takes its place next to the Titanic and the pink mist of Stockton Rush and his gullible "crew".

So far teslas gross revenue, all time, since starting sales, is less than half that at 436 billion. Gross revenue mind you, not profit.

habfranco 2025-09-05 14:42

They were leading in EV 5 years ago, but they dropped the ball to pursue robotaxi and Optimus. And what’s worse is that EV isn’t a solved problem yet, range is still a blocker for many (I’m a fan of EV, but I still stick to PHEV due to it), and they were in the best position to solve it before the competition. Now it will probably come from China in the next few years. And even worse, they dropped the ball to go after products where several competitors are already doing better than them. Their only narrative is “oh but we’ll be cheaper and scale better when it will work”.

EasyE1979 2025-09-05 14:42

habfranco 2025-09-05 14:55

Dangerous_Seaweed601 2025-09-05 14:56

This is a breach of the fiduciary duty by the board of directors.

TheRuggedHamster 2025-09-05 14:56

You should love that it’s performance based, including operational milestones such as Tesla reaching $400b/year in EBITDA profit. Since Elon is a complete incompetent clearly these milestones will never be reached and this pay package will be realized. That sucker will be working for free.

Each tranche requires Tesla to meet both a market cap goal and a performance goal. The first couple performance goals are stupidly easy, though, e.g. 20 million cumulative car sales. So he has to sell 12m cars over the next 10 years. That's 1.2m per year, down from 1.8m the past couple years.

IncarceratedScarface 2025-09-05 19:34

Mo_Steins_Ghost 2025-09-05 19:42

>The board is crazy. He is crazy, they're not. The board knows they can't make a dime off Tesla selling cars. All the money is in the perception of the stock. The bonus is in shares, it is ten years down the road, and it is predicated on achieving certain operating and stock performance targets. While Elon is there, the hype factor props up the stock, giving board members time to offload shares legally. If he fails, he gets little or nothing at the end of ten years, while they get to offload shares the entire time. If he succeeds, he gets richer, so does the board.

ObservationalHumor 2025-09-05 22:00

Pretty much exactly it. Musk has pumped the stock as far as he can directly so he's pushing for this because some amount of people will think the board is still made of serious and rational individuals who really must believe that Tesla is close to achieving all this stuff if they're willing to pay Musk so much money to see it through. However dumb you might think TSLA's retail shareholders are, you're likely still giving them too much credit. Adam Jonas and Dan Ives will up their valuations by another $500B overnight based upon this. Kathy Wood will publish some bullshit model saying a share price of $10k is reasonable in a bullish scenario. FOMO will hit hard and people will pile into options and squeeze shorts and before you know there will be hundreds of billions of dollars in extra market cap materializing out of nowhere.

Realistic_Caramel341 2025-09-05 23:33

Patrick Boyle has a good video on the issue Tesla is facing. Teslas stock is dependent on two different things - the current market they are operating in and the speculative technologies their investing in. The issue with the later is that its largely driven by faith in Musk. The problem has become the more Tesla looses revenue in the current or soon to be current markets, the more it relies on Musks ability to sell investors on speculative technologies, which means Musk is more and more able to consolidate power and have yhe board  pay him with more stocks. Which means that Musk is reward when Tesla does badly

That-Whereas3367 2025-09-06 12:50

The only area where Tesla ever had a lead was drivetrains and software. In every other aspect they were sub-par.

[deleted] 2025-09-06 12:52

Watch him miss the benchmarks and still get paid

That-Whereas3367 2025-09-06 12:53

Holmes embarrassed some very powerful people. Musk made them rich. Big difference.

Perfect_Toe_6526 2025-09-06 12:57

$TSLA overhyped for so long and overvalued than many other competitors, lately loosing credibility and fading loyal customer base, how in the world making it $8T+ company? Is it really possible?

habfranco 2025-09-06 12:57

Well i dont know, but from a final product PoV Tesla was definitely far ahead back then. I bought my car in 2018, i looked for full EV and the only serious options where I leave were Tesla, the Nissan Leaf, and the Renault Zoe. And tesla was clearly in another league back then. Still I fell back on a PHEV because range wasn’t good enough.

Perfect_Toe_6526 2025-09-06 12:59

The likes of Kathy wood and creamer guy and others promoted so long, but now missing bases

How can I get a job to be a top earning scammer too??

HusKen1 2025-09-06 13:55

What does this mean for the stock?? Surely share dilutions?!

Fun-Lengthiness-7493 2025-09-06 16:50

I can design shitty, worthless vehicles for half that amount. Hire me.

RhialtosCat 2025-09-06 17:45

I will short Tesla I think. This is preposterous. Beyond preposterous. Like the Onion or something.

CuriousBearMI 2025-09-06 19:19

Yall really picked the ass timeline

North_Ranger6521 2025-09-06 19:25

This is insane. How can they justify this? I know the board is controlled by toadies picked by Melon Husk, but how can they even think they can justify this to the shareholders?

North_Ranger6521 2025-09-06 19:26

He’s bought the best friends.

Hughley_N_Dowd 2025-09-06 20:09

Why stop at $1 trillion though? I mean, we are already deep in la-la, fantasy land territory with this absolute buffon. Why not offer all the money to infinity and back, pinky swear?

exqueezemenow 2025-09-06 21:06

Guess who controls the board and everyone on it?

No_Candy_8948 2025-09-06 22:41

A trillion dollar pay package? For what? For running a federally-subsidized Ponzi scheme into the ground while treating his workers like disposable machinery and calling it "innovation"? This isn't just a reward for failure; it's a grotesque parody of capitalism itself. This man has built his empire on the backs of exploited labor, fighting unions at every turn, all while pocketing billions in government subsidies that were paid for by the very American taxpayers he holds in contempt. And let's not forget the most sinister part: hiding every single Tesla crash statistic behind proprietary data blackboxes. He's literally putting PR over public safety, ensuring no one can truly hold him accountable for the real-world consequences of his half-baked "Full Self-Driving" experiments. The company shouldn't even be called Tesla. It's an insult to a real visionary. They should be called Edison's Shitboxes—a more fitting tribute to a man who specializes in taking credit, stealing ideas, and delivering dangerous, overhyped products. Deport this fraud back to South Africa. Let him run his apartheid-era labor practices somewhere else. The American people are done funding his ego trip.

SophocleanWit 2025-09-07 00:30

How’s Tesla doing these days? Business wise?

NutzNBoltz369 2025-09-07 00:45

How about pay him less and invest more into the actual product? If Tesla can make a car to beat BYD at their own game, than fine. Mainly a good, affordable EV for everyone. Maybe not "cheap" but a very good value. Enough to halt the regression into ICE that is happening. Maybe then the world will get a most unwelcomed trillionaire then. That or Tesla's board figures they will go down the tubes long before Elon ever sees this payday.

WillingPositive8924 2025-09-07 03:29

God! Yes, I wish we could pick which companies to exclude from index funds just based on morality never mind Musk’s house of cards.

Dommccabe 2025-09-07 07:53

They are only rich if they sell their shares on a high.. At some point this big bubble will burst and he will make a lot of people poor... rich and poor alike.

Metamorpholine 2025-09-07 09:32

Yep, that’s pretty much it

7amdrei7 2025-09-07 11:43

I mean, bribing/buying global governments is pretty expensive…

November87 2025-09-07 12:49

Pathetic, idiotic, and blatantly corrupt

NorCalWintu 2025-09-07 20:17

No one cares about this fucking nazi outside of his death!

onefornought 2025-09-07 21:24

Bold bet that all the negative consumer sentiment toward him will fade.

StanchoPanza 2025-09-08 00:47

"Elon's captive board obeys his directive to "offer" him a $1 TRILLION pay package" fixed it for you

SentinelZero 2025-09-08 01:09

Where would this money even come from?? The company isn't worth that much.

StanchoPanza 2025-09-08 01:13

and they've been dumping $TSLA by the tens to hundreds of millions

Garage-Psychological 2025-09-08 08:52

It's also based on operational milestones so....

lexievv 2025-09-08 12:57

I mean yeah, but it's not like he isn't already insanely rich. I don't think this will change his life that much compared to the idiots that are the shareholders agreeing to this.

BlackPhoenixX20 2025-09-09 10:52

do you realize that to get that money he needs to achieve tasks most people would consider impossible? its goal is basically to get Musk to be more motivated for Tesla to get all of it he needs to take tesla to 8.5 trillion dollars valuation from current valuation of 1 trillion, basically asking musk to 8.5x their entire money in the company. also he needs Tesla to have ebitda of 400 billion dollars, 20 million car deliveries, which is possible, but also 1 million robots and 1 million robotaxi on roads and factories.

BlackPhoenixX20 2025-09-09 10:54

he will get the entirety of this package if he manages to get Tesla have a adjusted profit of 400 billion dollars, so like 2.5 years in a hypothetical scenario. they're not giving him free money, they're asking him to make them free money out of air if he wants those rewards.

Pot_noodle_miner 2025-09-09 11:23

Tesla has never made more than $20b per annum, and it makes less than that now, how is that 2.5 years?

Slight-Ad1481 2025-09-09 23:46

Let’s open the market to paying the trillion to anyone who can get Tesla to reliably provide good and useful product to the market. I’m thinking maybe stainless steal cookware or maybe toothpaste . Something that lets the company practice distributing goods in leu of promises. Also, let’s start charging Elon stock and currency when the company fails to provide anything he promises.

pissoutmybutt 2025-09-10 02:27

If Tesla stocks crash though, so does his value. I don’t ever think he will be even hurt financially to the point of having means to live within. Money will always be an abstract concept he obsesses over despite never having to concern himself with

suboptiml 2025-09-10 03:10

He basically has to do nothing but not leave Tesla for this package to kick in. It’s a Ponzi scheme. https://youtu.be/W8HEjee20V0?si=BaQZI91x8KantaVv

Complete-Elevator992 2025-10-18 07:29

Hey careful man your gonna be called a dick rider for informing everyone he took a failing company and idea and made himself and others extremely rich and pushed other car companies including ones that only exist due to bailouts towards EV production and yet somehow the legacy car companies can’t seem to get it right with EVs, but yea Musk is a big stupid dummy who’s stupid and dumb. P.S. If they do just remind them how they rode his dick like a carousel before he expressed unpopular political opinions like free speech on American Social Media Platforms.
