Waymo's Former CEO Is Not Impressed With Tesla's Robotaxi - Business Insider

He's on the board of Rivian now. From what I've read about the R2 coming with Rivian's latest level 3 software Rivian will be well ahead of Tesla's autopilot and fsd next year.

So he expertly sees what is also obvious to laymen.

>"If they were striving to re-create today's Bay Area Uber experience," he told Business Insider over email, "looks like they've absolutely nailed it." Well yeah. It's an uber with a Tesla and a safety driver. Innovation level meh.

For Krafcik, the presence of an employee inside the car is proof that Tesla has yet to show off a real robotaxi service. "Please let me know when Tesla launches a robotaxi — I'm still waiting," he told Business Insider. "It's (rather obviously) not a robotaxi if there's an employee inside the car." Krafcik told Business Insider he has no interest in trying Tesla's Robotaxi.

It's obvious to anyone who bothers to look at what Tesla is really doing but mainstream media keeps repeating Tesla's lies so the average person thinks Tesla just cracked the code and is the only company with autonomous driving while nothing could be farther from the truth.

SuperF91EX 2025-08-17 15:18

The average person pays zero attention to Tesla.

PowerFarta 2025-08-17 15:28

It should patently be obvious to anyone with eyes. How these tesla stans think they're "ahead" when Waymo is literally delivering the product they've been promising for over a decade... Truly it boggles the mind

BuckChintheRealtor 2025-08-17 15:38

If it takes Tesla more than [7 years](https://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-hy-tesla-restaurant-20180313-story.html) to open a burger joint in LA, how do people expect them to ever "solve" autonomy?

ctiger12 2025-08-17 16:56

It is pretty obvious that a series of phases of tests have to be done before they can put this service to outsider test, like the pre launch test. To skip all the phases and push it out to a semi public launch is just a stupid move, that sounds like he’s overconfident of their capabilities and just failed right in front of public eyes, it’s too late to reverse the damage. This must be one of the most cursed decisions at a corp level and the corp still gave his all the billions of rewards.

NinjaN-SWE 2025-08-17 16:56

Lol, that's kinda crazy!

CEO says their competitor’s product is worse… More at 6

ProtonBroward 2025-08-17 17:26

Which is already failing.

[deleted] 2025-08-17 17:34

I’d be impressed if Tesla could make acceptable automatic windshield wipers. Let’s start there and work up to self driving.

LightMission4937 2025-08-17 18:09

Yea, because it's terrible.

ionizing_chicanery 2025-08-17 18:18

He even said there wouldn't be anyone in the car. Probably assumed dedicated teleoperators would be good enough before actually determining that they could be.

ionizing_chicanery 2025-08-17 18:19

Former CEO, far less skin in the game.

UsernamesAreHard26 2025-08-17 20:30

The point is that it’s just clickbait. Nothing worthwhile in this post.

Belzebutt 2025-08-17 22:04

Who’s been impressed with it so far?

[deleted] 2025-08-18 02:05

Stevie wonder say “duh.”

Tradetheday2093 2025-08-18 02:09

I’m pretty sure he has more than skin in the game.

Dull-Credit-897 2025-08-18 05:17

And that is why when mainstream media keeps repeating Tesla/Musk´s lies they believe it, Which pisses me off to no end.

Deliximus 2025-08-18 06:13

That hits the spot for sure!

[deleted] 2025-08-18 06:33

When he was CEO, Waymo had safety drivers too… and they sat in the drivers seat to take control

[deleted] 2025-08-18 07:31

Just build a decent metro 🚇

No-Eye3202 2025-08-19 05:52

Well it doesn't matter what anyone thinks it matters what the people holding the stock think. With its price this high Tesla can keep raising capital till it finally hits autonomy.

Grunge4U 2025-08-19 13:12

If Tesla ever gets there it will be years from now after they abandon their camera only approach and it won't matter then because every car produced will have beaten Tesla to autonomous driving and it will be as common as cruise control is on every new car today.

[deleted] 2025-08-19 14:20

Not totally true. The suburbs up here are full of people who cashed in on government subsidized leases where you could get a Tesla econobox or Crossover for less than a Sentra. People noticed that.

SuperF91EX 2025-08-19 19:36

So, help me here… Tesla “econobox” leasing is the same as understanding FSD?
