Whenever Lone Stink fucks up in a new way, the situation is always stupider than I would have imagined. Like, I knew the Tesla Diner would be bad. But I didn't imagine just how pathetic it would be. And I knew it would fail. But I didn't imagine just how spectacularly and obviously it would implode. This diner fiasco can't even die off quietly and discreetly, because these drastic cuts to service are drawing lots of attention. Like a parallel Streisand effect, but for eateries instead of people.

The insane amount of media coverage this diner has gotten is what's really astounding. It's a fucking charging location with a, thus far, one-off Tesla owned two story custom bespoke designed diner attached. This isn't exactly a billion dollar venture... Yum brands is worth $40 billion... but they have 61,000 locations world wide, making each restaurant worth about $655,000. They also sell products in grocery stores. Tesla has 2700 charging stations in the US total, so even if each location had a diner that adds $655k to Tesla's market cap, that would only increase their market cap by $1.8 billion, or about 0.18%. That is... if these restaurants were well oiled machines with huge economies of scale due to volume and central distribution of ingredients. They're not, and will almost certainly never be. The fact that this restaurant is taking up a huge lot in LA's Hollywood neighborhood, was built from scratch, is a one-off with no supply chain, and is offering fairly low prices on the food (for the region), means that this is almost certainly losing money with each day going by. Tesla will obviously never sell this location, given that it's a glorified publicity stunt for the company... but if they did... who exactly would buy it? It would cost a fortune!
If you're evaluating this establishment as a diner, you're... You're using the wrong model. This is an AI and Robotics company that happens to serve food while it collects training data. Although the reduction of menu items may seem like a sign of failure in the legacy dining industry, this gives Tesla an unprecedented ability to scale.
Tesla's lawyers will shortly be in touch to point out that the Optimus FSD disengaged moments before the robots fell head-first down the stairs, so that doesn't count.

It’s funny nobody realizes what’s going on here. The city of West Hollywood doesn’t allow sites that are fully for chargers. They are heavily NIMBY. Elon said screw that and said fine I’ll build a restaurant and disguise, add some chargers there. He got a permit for a restaurant. And loopholed his way into having a super charging station in an area that he couldn’t get permission for. Nobody knows this or reports on it, but it’s really what went on. It’s hilarious seeing everyone here talk about a restaurant. When this was purely a plan to go around city permitting restrictions.
