From the article: "Tesla’s new car sales in the UK plummeted by nearly 60 per cent in July, according to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), marking one of the sharpest declines in the brand’s recent history in Britain. The electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer registered just 987 new cars last month, down from 2,462 in July 2024 — a year-on-year drop of 59.9 per cent. The slump comes despite a recent refresh of its Model Y, the best-selling EV in Europe last year, and highlights the mounting challenges Tesla is facing across its global markets. Industry analysts point to a combination of factors behind the decline, including consumer backlash linked to Elon Musk’s public statements, regulatory scrutiny, and a highly competitive EV landscape with new entrants from China and legacy automakers stepping up their offerings." \-------------- And from The Guardian's live business blog: "**Just in: Sales of Teslas in the UK more than halved, year-on-year, in the UK last month as the electric carmaker’s struggles continue.** Industry body data just released shows that just 987 new **Teslas** were registered in the UK in July, almost 60% less than the 2,462 registered in July 2024. This means **Tesla’s** UK market share shrank to 0.7% in July, from 1.67% a year ago. For 2025 to date, **Tesla** sales in the UK are 7% lower, during a year in which CEO Elon Musk has faced heavy criticism for his – [now-soured](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jul/06/elon-musk-america-party-scott-bessent) – relationship with Donald Trump. The wider UK electric car sector grew in July, though. Sales of battery-powered vehicles (BEVs) rose by 9.1% to 29,825, giving BEVs a 21.3% share of the market. China’s **BYD** more than quadrupled its sales last month, to 3,184 in July from 768 a year ago. [The company recently launched a relatively cheap electric ca](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jun/12/byd-dolphin-surf-cheapest-uk-model-electric-carmaker-tesla)r, the Dolphin Surf, in the UK. **BYD’s** sales are up 514% during 2025 to 22,574, up from 3,672 in January-July 2024. That’s only slightly fewer than Tesla which has shifted 23,708 cars so far this year. Last month Tesla reported a large drop in quarterly deliveries, as demand faltered due to [the backlash over CEO Elon Musk’s political stance.](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/mar/29/tesla-owners-europe-feel-cars-elon-musk) Tesla’s sales have also been hurt by its aging model line-up – the company has been rolling out an updated Model Y this year, dubbed the “Juniper” refresh. Yesterday, Tesla announced it was handing Musk stock options worth almost $30bn, in an attempt to keep him committed to the company for the next few years. Overall, the UK’s new car market shrank by 5% in July with 140,154 units registered, which is the weakest July since 2022." AwesomeShikuwasa77 2025-08-05 10:07

Well. This means stocks will be up 10% this week, because they are all waiting for the new model.

Little_Palpitation12 2025-08-05 10:15

Just 10%?

doggoandsidekick 2025-08-05 10:28

Quick - pump the stock 10% and give the CEO 30 billion

I-Pacer 2025-08-05 10:30

$30bn reward for overseeing this shit show? I wonder how he would treat an employee that performed this badly.

dharmoslap 2025-08-05 10:33

Chinese car manufacturers don’t get the same import tariffs like in the EU. This will be a real challenge for Tesla.

dharmoslap 2025-08-05 10:34

Their whole board is just a disgrace. Now they can only blame themselves.

jrbobdobbs333 2025-08-05 10:39

Finally, some good fucking news!!!!

Conscious-Bee-5691 2025-08-05 10:44

But with more power he will solve Self driving him Self

Optimal_Collection77 2025-08-05 10:49

I'm seeing a lot of BYDs and OMODA new cars by me and 1 or 2, 25 plate Teslas

MajorAltruistic8204 2025-08-05 11:01

Single-month sales (actually registration) figures for Tesla in the UK are irrelevant.  Right hand drive cars get produced, shipped to the UK and registered in ship-load batches. So registrations follow a wildly see-sawing pattern. For example 7.7k units were registered in June, up 14% y-o-y vs 1k in July. So it only makes sense to look at quarterly or half-yearly numbers (first six months of 2025 were 2% down y-o-y).

fastwriter- 2025-08-05 11:14

Same in Germany. Only 1100 newly registered Teslas in July (-55 percent). And registered does not mean sold in Germany, as Manufacturers use registrations to pimp the Statistics. So how many of those 1100 where registered in Teslas name?

fastwriter- 2025-08-05 11:16

I‘m in Spain on Holidays atm. And at least half of the rental car fleet here on Mallorca are Chinese Cars of different brands (BYD, MG, OMODA and others).

Optimal_Collection77 2025-08-05 11:17

I'd prefer one of those brands. A positive rental experience would probably tip me over to going EV

fastwriter- 2025-08-05 11:20

I had a MG PHEV for the first week. Worst car I drove for a very long time. Threw up a fault code luckily, so I could switch to a Kia Sportage. Which is miles better. I presume other Chinese Cars are of better quality though. At least in Germany, where I live those MGs are dirt cheap.

Far_Addition1210 2025-08-05 11:30

The global sales of Tesla are falling off a cliff, 50% down. That's why they couldn't give a guidance on numbers.

[deleted] 2025-08-05 11:52

Elon will convert all the unsold curs into robotaxis. Now he only needs to hire an army of safety drivers to watch those cars don't go crazy

kombiwombi 2025-08-05 12:01

You're right. More unsold Teslas which can be converted to cybertaxis. Make that up 20%!

FreedomMedium3664 2025-08-05 12:10

Wonder why these Islamic countries don’t like Tesla?🧐

SolutionWarm6576 2025-08-05 12:13

More bad news=Bullish.

Chemical-Idea-1294 2025-08-05 12:15

Market share down 35% 2025 vs. 2024.

Status_Ad_4405 2025-08-05 12:34

Optimus will be driving them all. Within 6 months Optimus will be the best driver in the world. Lol

Status_Ad_4405 2025-08-05 12:35

Elon has been engineering Optimus to be the safest driver in the world, as well as the world's greatest reefer smoking sexbot, so no problems there.

[deleted] 2025-08-05 12:42

Lets not go too crazy. Just give him 29 billion instead.

Suitable-Activity-27 2025-08-05 13:08

Yeah, but Tesla’s a meme stock. I suspect we’ll see a point where sales are shockingly low/nonexistent and the stock is unchanged.

Syscrush 2025-08-05 13:09

"market pressures" JFC. Like the pressure to not be a lying, regulatory-capturing, homicidal Nazi?

jrbobdobbs333 2025-08-05 13:12

Meme stocks don't defy gravity forever do they?

Battle_of_BoogerHill 2025-08-05 13:12

Don't forget Mars, Boring Tunnels, Hyperloops, Rocket jump ships, cargo train pods, unfertilized eggs everywhere, Neurolink, flying cars, the moon, saving children in caves, making nazis popular again, AND being BEST MEME EDGELORD EVAR!!?!?!?@_#^$ ....this timeline sucks. Fuck Musk. Release the Epstein files

Ok_Individual 2025-08-05 13:17

You pumping a stock will not increase a CEOs fixed salary.

rampant-ninja 2025-08-05 13:24

Worth noting people will have caught wind of the new EV grant expected to be available soon and may be holding off purchases. That might partially explain the cooler month for the market overall.

VirginiaLuthier 2025-08-05 13:25

And yet the BOD is poised to give Elon a 30 billion dollar package if he promises to stay CEO for the next two years......

Suitable-Activity-27 2025-08-05 13:42

Tbh, who knows. There are millions of idiots who’ve drank the Koolaid and think Musk is a genius.

Acceptable_Rice1139 2025-08-05 13:53

They technically are free to elect who they want. The problem is the idiotic stock holders that keep dragging this out.

Constant-Muffin-1765 2025-08-05 13:56

If that's because of the BYD, I can only say idiots need some time to realize how shit BYD is. I am Chinese and I won't touch BYD.

dtyamada 2025-08-05 14:26

Oh I'm sure someone will get fired for this ... it just won't be fElon

FrogmanKouki 2025-08-05 14:26

It's up nearly $100 since March, and it's only been negative news aside from a diner...

Exile20 2025-08-05 14:35

Tell us how?

FootballPizzaMan 2025-08-05 14:37

Only 60%???

Hallucinates_Bacon 2025-08-05 14:44

Funny how companies get shittier day after day because they need infinite growth to meet shareholder demands. Yet this crony just lines his own pockets with $30bn more money from this dying company and the shareholders sign it over. Lol

vic25qc 2025-08-05 14:57

Probably the guillotine treatment

NotAFanOfLeonMusk 2025-08-05 16:24

"Market pressure"?? Is this what we are calling "they are fascists" now?? I think we can do better.

sonicmerlin 2025-08-05 21:01

Elon is such a worthless stain on humanity. He destroys such a beloved company, shows zero remorse, zero attempts to correct course, arrogant dismissal of all criticism, continues demanding disgusting financial rewards… the board seems willing to go down with the ship

AwesomeShikuwasa77 2025-08-05 22:44

Hey, there was roof tiling dropping on a guest and I am not sure if becoming a fast food joint will increase Tesla’s return on sales ;)

Fun-Crow6284 2025-08-05 23:04

Buy Tesla stock Any bad news is good news for the company

Long-Cricket5024 2025-08-05 23:27

I’m convinced there will be a day when stock price craters

Stewth 2025-08-06 02:59

Someone also just filed suit re: Elmo's never-ending bullshittery on the fictional robotaxi, so it's probably going up by more than 15% tbh

[deleted] 2025-08-06 04:19

Nice.

this_one_has_to_work 2025-08-06 12:10

When has 60% been described as a slump? Catastrophe maybe?

meshreplacer 2025-08-06 14:39

Tesla stock up 2.78% on the news.

Exciting_Turn_9559 2025-08-06 15:56

Dead brand.

Due_Tailor1412 2025-08-06 19:34

I'm interested as to how that works in Germany. In the UK it was (I don't think it's changed it's just the market has changed) usual for a dealer to register a car to get a bonus from a manufacturer, so for instance if they got a bonus for selling 100 cars by March 31st and they have sold 97 then it totally made sense to buy and register three cars. But this means they are the registered owner and the car now has an age related number, so if they sell the car it's theoretically "second hand". I am the "second" owner of my car although it only had 70 miles on the odometer when I bought it from the dealer, I also had 3 years and nine months Warantee. The point I'm making is that the second you register it the clock is ticking. It's now 2 years and 11 months to the first TUV inspection. The longer you hold it the "Older" it's getting ..

fastwriter- 2025-08-07 15:28

It’s the same in Germany with the small difference that the sales managers at the Manufacturers and Importers often force dealers to take some cars and register them in their name. They get a nice discount on the cars price and market those cars as „Tageszulassung“ (literally translated „one day registration) also at a discount price to customers. Often these are models that don’t sell well or the Manufacturer does it to pimp its numbers in the KBA Statistics (most often because the CEOs or the Sales dept. Heads bonusses are tied to this statistic). Another form of statistical manipulation are the registration of more demonstration cars at the Dealers than strictly necessary. So Tesla has these instruments to fake registration numbers. Every Manufacturer and Importer has these Instruments. But I think Tesla has the most incentive right now to manipulate Numbers. So the number of cars really sold to private customers could be even worse.
