Waymo has done 12 million trips so far.

bobber66 | 2025-07-29 18:20 | 225 views

It was big news 2 months ago when Waymo announced they had already provided 10 million trips. They also said they are doing 250,000 every week. It’s been over 2 months since that interview so that means an additional 2 million trips. How many has Elon done?

I am sure Elon has done way more trips than Waymo's execs. Oh, you meant self driving.

PortlandPetey 2025-07-29 18:25

Teslur is the world leader in robotaxis.

PortlandPetey 2025-07-29 18:25

The Tesla Fanboys will tell you "Once FSD is ready its over for Waymo". They think there will be an update soonish that will take Teslas FSD to the next level. The argument is always "Tesla has more cars and all of them can be used as taxis without updating the hardware". The Waymo success story sadly isnt Teslas downfall. Maybe one day its the final nail in Teslas coffin but I think we will have to wait a little longer

FrogmanKouki 2025-07-29 18:30

But how many of those trips of dropped off riders in the middle of an intersection?

jason12745 2025-07-29 18:45

Zero trips available to the public.

Pyanx 2025-07-29 19:06

Tesla has shit tech and Elon is a criminal, but this is a bad faith argument simply because Waymo started offering rides much earlier. If we’re gonna criticize the shithead, maybe do it with quality arguments instead, not like there’s exactly a shortage Edit: sigh… since confirmation bias is a hell of a drug, let me spell it out: If you’re comparing the distance covered by two marathoners, and one started running earlier, you would probably want to normalize for the time difference first. You could prove Tesla robotaxi is shit by: - measuring the miles serviced by both Tesla and Waymo during the same time duration - measure the miles serviced without human in the cockpit - measure the miles serviced per car per day, etc etc

ryhaltswhiskey 2025-07-29 19:18

>Waymo started offering rides much earlier "Whoa NO FAIR! Just because you got to market first!?"

GoodFaithConverser 2025-07-29 19:23

Lol Musk promised FSD almost a decade ago. The fact that others have overtaken tesla by far is obviously relevant and kinda funny. If he was so far ahead, this stuff should’ve been happening in 2016 or 2017ish.

rapidpeacock 2025-07-29 19:24

What about that trip with the reporters? Said it was going to rain and to get out stranding them. That counts as at least a half ride

LVegasGuy 2025-07-29 19:39

If you mean unsupervised that would be zero.

Ryanj37 2025-07-29 19:46

They are going to "solve autonomy" bro - waymo can't scale

CouncilmanRickPrime 2025-07-29 19:46

It's not bad faith. Elon literally is still arguing Tesla is the leader in the robotaxi space. As do their fans. They are at least a decade behind Waymo, how are they the leader?

USMCTapRackBang 2025-07-29 19:49

All it takes is one privately owned Tesla being used as a robotaxi to get in accident or kill someone and it is beyond game over. That private citizen will be bled dry financially in litigation. Every maintenance record, modification, etc.. will be questioned. People will sue Tesla and the private vehicle owner and also go after private citizens in civil courts. You'd be a fool to let your privately owned vehicle drive around autonomously with unknown passengers... Well then again most Tesla owners are fools...

Actually-Yo-Momma 2025-07-29 19:59

Elon making these outlandish robo taxi claims is similar to me telling myself I’m going to exercise after work

Dadd_io 2025-07-29 20:37

There have been a few unsupervised trips that ended up as accident reports in various newspapers and courts.

Key-Beginning-2201 2025-07-29 20:40

Number of commercial ADAS4 rides Tesla has done: 0. As in a big fat ZERO. Fck Musk.

Key-Beginning-2201 2025-07-29 20:41

None of their hardware is capable of it. Software updates won't matter.

Pyanx 2025-07-29 20:45

Just pointing out it doesn’t make sense the mileage driven between two services if one started earlier

Pyanx 2025-07-29 20:45

Yes, example of one of the quality arguments to make against Tesla, not by comparing the mileages between two taxi services with different start dates

Pyanx 2025-07-29 20:46

They’re not, the end point that “Tesla robotaxi is shit” is correct, the specific argument used was bad

schtickshift 2025-07-29 20:48

They have done Waymo than Tesla.

CouncilmanRickPrime 2025-07-29 20:48

No. The end point is Waymo has over 10 million miles, Tesla has 0. Tesla claims to be the leader in the space and the stock is at an insane valuation because too many believe them.

ryhaltswhiskey 2025-07-29 20:49

Whooosh

RickHunter84 2025-07-29 20:55

You’re going to have to buy a robot to drive the car then you’re FSD.

[deleted] 2025-07-29 20:59

FSD is a bold face lie. Tesla is camera only, if there is no redundancy (lidar, radar) than the human becomes the failsafe. The crazy thing is reading people having their lives put in danger but still complement the service overall. "When it isn't actively trying to kill my family it works perfectly!!!"

[deleted] 2025-07-29 21:03

You also have to factor in Elon actively lying to everyone up to present day to pump stocks. That puts his customers in danger

wenchanger 2025-07-29 21:06

but elon says waymos costs way-mo (re) money. pun intended

couchtomato62 2025-07-29 21:17

Waymo is everywhere.

Sypheix 2025-07-29 21:43

Technically he's done 0

ryhaltswhiskey 2025-07-29 22:12

And if one country builds 10 million tanks but none of them actually have working guns, well obviously they aren't winning that arms race. Elon would totally build 10 million tanks without working guns and then say that he has a huge army.

ryhaltswhiskey 2025-07-29 22:19

>since confirmation bias It's not confirmation bias. A competitor got to market long before Tesla did. If Tesla had magically caught up to them after launching late, you would have a point here. But they haven't. So there really isn't a comparison to be had. A product > no product.

Boniuz 2025-07-29 22:25

I believe Waymo did over half a million rides and over one million miles in its first driverless year. Tesla has about 992 000 miles left to meet that metric. Something in the lines of half a million miles in 2015.

Pineapplepizzaracoon 2025-07-29 22:46

At least they avoided surge pricing!!

za72 2025-07-29 22:56

once FSD is ready I'll be on Mars

ShotBandicoot7 2025-07-30 03:34

Not sure why you are downvoted. What I would be curious: do you have the 3 KPIs on your suggestions? They make a lot of sense and would get us a bit closer to comparing apples with apples.

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-07-30 05:49

Plus, the vehicle can’t use all of its “downtime” doubling as a taxi. . . It needs to re-charge at some point. Who’s gonna handle that out in the wild? Or will it drive itself all the way home for the owner to do it? Which would limit its range as a taxi, I’d expect. And if the owner lives in the suburbs, that seems like a place that would have pretty low demand for a taxi since homes in those locales already own a car—actually most probably own at least two.

FlipZip69 2025-07-30 05:53

Not a single legitimate one.

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-07-30 06:00

Why not? It might be more expensive for Waymo to scale up, but to date Tesla doesn’t have a self-driving taxi product to be scaled. I think some people have too much faith in the technological capabilities of the camera system to which Tesla has shackled itself.

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-07-30 06:14

Ha! Waymo is SUCH a better name than robotaxi. What, is elmo their head of marketing too??? One name is fun and approachable. The other conjures images of a cheesy sci-fi B-flick from the 50’s/60’s about a robot taxi that goes haywire and starts killing people. Something MST3K would mock. See, this is why serious manufacturing companies spend time and money on marketing professionals. . . And NOT let their money-drunk CEO do things like have their four model names spell out S-3-X-Y. What a fuckin’ choad.

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-07-30 06:37

Yeah, and “robotaxi” sounds like something that wants to kill me. . . And apparently the data backs this up. Also, Didn’t elmo ever see RoboCop before coming up with that name?!? Actually he probably did and thought it would be a cool/funny association. HUGE marketing blunder with the name. Not as bad a blunder as over-hyping an unproven, (Unproven, hell! Non-existent!) product, but an unforced blunder nonetheless.

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-07-30 06:41

I’d go with comparing driving/accident/risky or illegal maneuver data. Which is difficult when tesla doesn’t want to share that data.

Withnail2019 2025-07-30 08:22

The answer is zero. Elon has done zero trips with any genuine customers.

Withnail2019 2025-07-30 08:22

There arent going to be any privately owned Teslas being used as robotaxis.

Withnail2019 2025-07-30 08:24

Marketing doesn't matter because this is not a real product.

USMCTapRackBang 2025-07-30 09:47

Yes there are. You might want to check the news or the quarterly calls for Tesla... "Owners of Tesla cars will be able to add their vehicles to the company’s robotaxi network sometime next year, Elon Musk said on the company’s quarterly earnings call on Wednesday, potentially allowing hundreds of thousands of customers to make money by remotely renting out their cars as self-driving cabs. "

Withnail2019 2025-07-30 11:36

>"Owners of Tesla cars will be able to add their vehicles to the company’s robotaxi network sometime next year, Elon Musk said Yeah. That's what we, call a 'lie'.

Slight_Pomelo_1008 2025-07-30 11:40

Elon sells more hotdogs than Waymo

USMCTapRackBang 2025-07-30 11:41

True, most of what comes out of the Musk man's mouth is nothing more than inflated promises and falsehoods that do not ever come to fruition. Nonetheless that is their "plan" and I look forward to the day some idiot Tesla fanboy enrolls his vehicle into that program and loses everything due Tesla's shitty FSD and lack of lidar.

Withnail2019 2025-07-30 13:02

There is no program and there will be no program.

[deleted] 2025-07-30 17:39

I’ll bet Joey Chestnut is all in on Tesla

Roadgoddess 2025-07-30 19:26

Do you mean successful trips?

RocketLabBeatsSpaceX 2025-07-31 02:43

Elon has like 12 but that’s ok, Elon is a hotdog salesman now.

shortyrocker 2025-08-03 02:00

Have fun cleaning your car

USMCTapRackBang 2025-08-03 14:03

Huh?

Ryanj37 2025-08-04 03:02

Should have said my comment was sarcastic

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-08-08 07:11

I shoulda known you weren’t that dumb. Sorry.
