Elon is asking for it: What Musk’s latest Trump spat means as Tesla sales sink

forbes | 2025-07-01 21:21 | 323 views

Elon Musk’s tantrum over President Donald Trump’s budget bill that adds trillions of dollars to the federal deficit raises the possibility that the intemperate billionaire is once again courting new risks for his companies, especially Tesla. The spat comes as the carmaker is expected to post a big drop in electric vehicle sales tomorrow. Meanwhile, it’s about to lose federal incentives for EV sales and charging services, and its proposed robotaxi business may hinge on whatever federal regulations the Trump administration cooks up. Hard to pick sides. Elon is right about spending but his goal is to dump wages hard by h1bmaxxing so he's also ripping off the voters

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-07-01 21:37

What do you call a cage match between two people who are universally hated by 80% of the world's population?

Thinklikeachef 2025-07-01 21:37

How badly will Tesla be hurt by the loss of the credits, etc? I'm reading conflicting analysis about the impact on net profit.

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-07-01 21:49

Tesla has a market value of $1.2 trillion with only $10 billion in lifetime profit. This is in spite of receiving more than $50 billion (pure profit) from various clean energy rebates, grants, carbon credit sales, etc... If you took all that away, Tesla would have a net lifetime loss of AT LEAST $40 billion. Don't forget that Tesla sales revenue is now shrinking, NOT growing, and their EV market share worldwide is at a lifetime low and continuing to fall.

Lower production should also work against their economy of scale too. But the wallst sharks will smell the blood in water way before.

trapercreek 2025-07-01 22:22

Elon & every $TSLA investor deserves it. They’ve had a great ride unexplainable by any form of fundamental, quantitative or technical analysis over the years. It’s beyond time for a reversion to non-meme valuation.

EducationTodayOz 2025-07-01 22:27

excellent we call it excellent, the tw narcissist will destroy each other as their very existence is threatened. if elon gets too desperate he will spill on what they did in 24

CareBearOvershare 2025-07-01 22:28

Yeah, the loss of credits is just the start. Cancel contracts. Ramp up regulatory and criminal scrutiny. Trump can squash Elon like a bug.

[deleted] 2025-07-01 22:29

I'd say justice but there's a non-zero chance they'll take the rest of us down with them.

slackday 2025-07-01 23:23

Elon staying out of politics to focus on Tesla was so last week.

Thisisntmyaccount24 2025-07-01 23:40

Bring back claymation celebrity death match!

-OptimisticNihilism- 2025-07-01 23:50

Tesla stock skyrockets when Trump wins due to expected government influence. Tesla stock crashes back down when a lot of people that would normally buy Tesla’s don’t want one anymore. Tesla rebounds when large contracts are announced for musks companies. Not only is new government money gone, but the existing government money is disappearing, and sales are still declining. Tesla makes a good car and the used prices are declining so much it’s enticing, but we are still buying a Kia this week. Partially Musk, partially the MY bubble design is looking dated.

followtharulez 2025-07-02 00:50

Tisk tisk tisk. My heart bleeds purple piss for Edolf.

Itslikelennonsaid 2025-07-02 01:29

Tesla is the Bud Light of Cars. Alienated their main demographic and then when that blew up in their faces, backpeddaaled hard leaving no potential customer with good feelings. Having the future of American democracy tied up in the mess does raise the stakes a little but I feel it is a solid analogy.

journeyworker 2025-07-02 01:32

Hey tesler, musk is off the rails, and he’s having a bitch-slap fight with the moron holding the nuclear football. Is bad press really better than no press at all?

Practical-Cow-861 2025-07-02 01:53

I was just thinking we haven't had a Tesla capital raise in a good while. Let's see Elon test how much more abuse the rubes will take.

Practical-Cow-861 2025-07-02 01:54

They would have lost $186m last year if it were not for ZEV credit sales (which I'm not convinced they were actually paid for)

BayHistorian 2025-07-02 01:58

You’re all spot on except for the part where “Tesla makes a good car”. It’s still a tech company making cars instead of a carmaker making tech. The tech is the only thing that makes it a decent car, it’s a piece of shit otherwise with its craftsmanship

Musk really isn't anywhere close to as smart as he thinks he is. Dude willingly, knowingly and intentionally spent like $250 plus million to elect the orange ape and a pet rock from the 1970's KNOWS that EVERYONE who works with trumpy will meet his wrath at some point or another. musk wasn't thinking of the U.S., of helping folks, ONLY himself but how is that working out for him? Look at what's happened to their sales and the worst is likely yet to come. A box of rocks could have predicted this, yet musk and all his so-called intelligence wasn't able to see that partnering up with the orange ape wasn't going to be good for him. Musk likely thought he was smarter than trump, he is, but this wasn't ever about musk vs. trump, it's about musk vs ALL of trump's supporters and musk wasn't ever going to be able to take them all on and win. Many were talking about how many months it would take for them to have their falling out. I was wrong, I said about 3 months and he made it like 5 months. Still, a predictable outcome... yet musk really screwed himself over.

Chippopotanuse 2025-07-02 02:30

Jake Paul vs. Pierce Morgan?

jayeffkay 2025-07-02 02:58

Saber tooth leopards eating faces??? No people still think those are cool. Mosquitos eating faces I believe is most appropriate.

EasyJob8732 2025-07-02 03:28

Well, he spent hundreds of millions to achieve this so he can get a rusty metallic cactus shove up his own you know what…who’s to blame?!

LargeDietCokeNoIce 2025-07-02 03:37

Don’t care at all if Elon and his horrible little car company tank. I do hope he gets peeved enough to spill the tea on the 2024 election rigging.

sirbinlid1 2025-07-02 03:46

If televised a ratings winner

CatBowlDogStar 2025-07-02 04:05

And interest payments on the $50 billion in cash.

CatBowlDogStar 2025-07-02 04:07

All fair. But we don't see the 37D chess. / s I think we really do.  So much implosions coming.

CatBowlDogStar 2025-07-02 04:07

Be joyous.

Downtown_Music4178 2025-07-02 05:39

Trump can cause Tesla stock to drop 15% with a tweet containing one word ‘LIDAR’! Seriously it would be easy to make an executive order requiring LIDAR for full self driving cars along with stricter regulation. It would kill the robotaxi narrative and tank the stock. Then if Elon keeps FA he can FO more when Trump goes after the Optimus robots stating that we need to avoid real life terminators walking around!!

decaturbob 2025-07-02 09:39

\- I am cracking up, 2 narcissistic assholes going at each other....need more popcorn

BlacksmithNZ 2025-07-02 11:08

"*musk and all his so-called intelligence wasn't able to see that partnering up with the orange ape wasn't going to be good for him*" Ego. Hubris Imagine thinking Trump will do the right thing if only somebody smart could explain it right. Elon ego vastly overestimates both his own intelligence and that of Trump. He thought Trump would see the value of things like reducing emissions, but that completely overlooks that Trump just isn't smart enough or reasonable enough to do the right thing.

GiveMeSomeShu-gar 2025-07-02 12:41

Trump holds the cards in this cage match.

Trailsya 2025-07-02 13:14

totally agree, except 1970s? Even 1950s' Republican president Eisenhower was way more middle of the road than these weirdos

kosk11348 2025-07-02 15:19

He is not right about spending. His DOGE department was a joke that found almost no fraud or waste. The revenue shortfall is because the rich don't pay enough taxes.

thegoodcrumpets 2025-07-02 15:21

Totally agree about DOGE being a smoke screen but he is right America's spending is nothing short of obscene and they can't run this deficit forever

fatmanstan123 2025-07-02 16:21

A good day

Hzntl 2025-07-02 22:16

Musk spent $280 million to look like a cock, lose a ton of cash, tank his personal and corporate brands, vaporise the notion that he was done sort of genius, draw attention to his drug habit, alienate an entire administration, and publicly fail at the one thing people thought he might be good at - streamlining bureaucratic process. He'd better hope all the stolen data was worth it. What a total dickhead.

Autobot1979 2025-07-03 09:02

No need to H1B max. Simply remove birthright citizenship for everyone including the children of US citizens. You only get citizenship once you are gainfully employed and paying taxes for 5 years. Solved your chesp labor issue.

Academic-Meal-2573 2025-07-04 13:50

Where did musk learn politics? Trump uni? Lol
