Did Tesla ignore a red light here?

arnerob | 2025-06-28 11:15 | 119 views

In their new video "World's First Autonomous Delivery of a Car" around 1:50, a car in front of a Tesla and a self-driving Tesla seem to ignore a red light. However, I'm European and don't know all the American rules. Who gets fined in case something like that happens?

Looks like a pedestrian light (triangular light arrangement) which doesn't have a green. If it's flashing red, you can proceed after checking for pedestrians in the crosswalk. I highly doubt the system is safe but I don't think they shared a clip of something that blatant.

I can’t tell for sure at that frame rate, but the shape and placement of the lights on the opposing side tells me that it’s either a flashing yellow or red. If it’s red, it’s legally identical to a stop sign.

GarysCrispLettuce 2025-06-28 13:32

How on earth does a video become so low in frame rate these days without someone either fucking up big time or making a conscious effort to remove frames? No cameras today record video like that, so why does this video exist?

arnerob 2025-06-28 13:44

I slowed the video down from the original on youtube

BildoWarrior 2025-06-28 14:21

Doesn’t matter. That car will receive a presidential pardon.

Dommccabe 2025-06-28 14:56

If the cars CAN actually drive themselves, then why are they limited to drive with a safety driver and a safety vehicle? I smell a rat. Let's see the robo taxi drive without the test staff... how long until a big accident happens?

ChampsLeague3 2025-06-28 15:36

They can drive themselves for \~10 miles without an intervention. They just took a chance and got lucky to offset the sales figures that'll come at the end of June. Of course, people are fucking idiots so they don't listen to Elon's words when he says the first 99% is easy, it's the 99.999% that's the most difficult. Instead, they think this is an inflection point. It's not.

ARAR1 2025-06-28 15:50

You wrote all this but failed to recognize it is not a cross street intersection traffic light?

BidAccomplished4641 2025-06-28 15:50

Well, if you watch the full video they’re pretty proud that it parked in the well-marked fire lane, so…

PoutineMeInCoach 2025-06-28 15:52

No, these are flashing yellows for a ped-xing. I hate everything Musk but this ain't it.

sik_dik 2025-06-28 16:22

It happened to me before. It stopped at a red light, then outta nowhere just started accelerating into the intersection before the light had changed. I had to slam the brakes

imoutohunter 2025-06-28 16:27

Trump would have gave him a pardon, but then Elon called him a pedo.

arnerob 2025-06-28 16:52

Ah, thank you!

Large-Ad-9156 2025-06-28 19:26

Regulators are paedos' obv.

General-Bend1129 2025-06-28 21:36

Yes

Veserv 2025-06-28 23:15

I just checked, the answer is no. It was a flashing red light which should be treated as a stop sign. [Here is the intersection.](https://www.google.com/maps/@30.2308615,-97.7335357,3a,75y,321.03h,87.04t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sWH2w7Kwbzvh0t_xfw7BnFQ!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D2.956285682382074%26panoid%3DWH2w7Kwbzvh0t_xfw7BnFQ%26yaw%3D321.0310682309261!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDYyNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) You can read the traffic sign there indicating: "Stop on flashing red light then proceed if clear." [Here is the long form video at 1x where it occurs at ~17m25s.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRRtW16GalE&t=1045s) The stoplight is obscured in the main view, but if you look at the lower right view (which is delayed a few seconds from the main view for some odd reason) at maximum resolution you can barely make out that the light transitions to a flashing red light at ~17m33s and then the Tesla correctly treats it as a stop sign. But it does illegally park in a clearly marked fire lane at the end.

Don't forget, for 1 delivery I'm sure they heavily mapped the route beforehand.

AgentSmith187 2025-06-29 03:58

I would love to know how many attempts they made to get one good delivery for publicity reasons. The fact they only announced it after the fact suggests they were not particularly confident at the very least and didnt want to risk a public failure.

[deleted] 2025-06-29 10:57

I see Teslas run red light all the time. Saw one today. Just another day.

Tatermen 2025-06-29 16:40

They faked a video promoting self driving in 2016. I don't see why they couldn't have faked it a second time. And if it was real, this is just a way for Tesla to prevent buyers from rejecting cars at collection for faults. Can't reject it if it's already parked in your driveway.

Its a cross walk

Lacrewpandora 2025-07-01 21:03

This is near the intersection of E Oltorf St and Burton Drive. Its a flashing light for a pedestrian crosswalk, with a sign stating to stop at flashing light and proceed if clear. [https://maps.app.goo.gl/rbKVBNnMStmRgrwp6](https://maps.app.goo.gl/rbKVBNnMStmRgrwp6)

It was hurrying as it needed to take a piss... I mean, we all do that from time to time when we really gotta go...
