Tesla are good at batteries but so are China.  Why would they not use a company like BYD for this?

It's actually pretty weird because a giant block of batteries is basically a commodity at this point.

Yes, it's strange because what tesla does is basically repackage CATL's batteries (with BYD as alternative supplier, see for example the last sentence of [https://cnevpost.com/2025/02/05/tesla-megafactory-shanghai-production-start-feb-11/](https://cnevpost.com/2025/02/05/tesla-megafactory-shanghai-production-start-feb-11/) ). So why wouldn't they go immediately for the original supplier?

They are BYD batteries, so why involve Tesla at all?

Ditto all previous comments. All I can think is he has offered to do this at cost, or even below, or has otherwise bribed to get it, because he needs good news right now more than he needs the money.

The one thing Elon is a genius at is gobbeling up government subsidies. China probably expects some kind of political benefit in return.

China doesn't need Tesla for this... It's a bribe.  China is probably gaining access to some of the shit he stole from DC.
