Tesla FSD Adds New 'Keep Hands Ready' Steering Warning

McFatty7 | 2026-02-17 20:50 | 268 views

* First spotted in FSD v14.2.2.4, but also appearing in earlier 14.2 builds. * The system now adjusts driver‑attention demands based on road complexity. * Example: fewer nags in an empty parking lot, more in busy intersections.

Sounds like they're prepping for conditional level 3.

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-02-17 21:31

I like it. In ideal conditions, it allows me to look away for longer periods.

in4theshow 2026-02-17 21:36

I wonder if it was my imagination, but seems like less nagging recently.

Skryllll 2026-02-17 21:38

Ever since I moved out...

in4theshow 2026-02-17 21:43

Lol, thank you!

jtoper 2026-02-17 21:56

This is a nice step, I think this fixes one of my small gripes. I've gotten very used to the reduced nag, but then certain scenarios pop up where it internally wants more attention and I can't tell outside of it just nagging more often. A little indicator that it wants more attention is great.

Still waiting for a HW3 update, chilling on 12.6.4 (it’s working great though)

Drewfrickitydo 2026-02-17 22:15

Here I was thinking it saw me holding my coffee in both hands to warm up.

Box-o-bees 2026-02-17 22:29

Agreed. If they could reduce the nagging, it would go a long way for quality of life improvement.

ZeroBalance98 2026-02-17 22:34

This isnt new I even commented about this a while ago, notateslaapp is just slow to report

lasquiggle 2026-02-17 22:36

How will this work with laws that state you can't operate your phone in a motor vehicle? I assume this is technically still illegal even with FSD in control.

Quin1617 2026-02-17 22:38

These features have existed for a while now. One of the FSD YouTubers showed it in a video a couple months back(DirtyTesla iirc).

sailirish7 2026-02-17 23:00

The *Driver cannot operate a phone. Until it's unsupervised, it's still illegal.

Come on HW3

ZeroWashu 2026-02-18 01:49

I actually got hit with this while eating a Blizzard on the way back from DQ but I think it mostly came from looking out the window too long seeing if the car was going to pull in front someone from a stop.

DrPeppehr 2026-02-18 02:26

I’ve been getting strikeouts for changing directions on tesla navigation or changing the song

in4theshow 2026-02-18 02:42

Recently? I was, not as many since I got the update. Just tried it today again.

DevinOlsen 2026-02-18 02:53

This is old, I showed it in a video and made a post about it a couple months ago. https://x.com/devinolsenn/status/2003961187738992776?s=46

OhNoMyGoGurt 2026-02-18 05:17

Waited nearly four years. Traded it in. These little improvements aren’t worth the 10k I paid for fsd.

a1454a 2026-02-18 05:32

That warning had been there for a while now, it comes up when the attention monitoring sees your hand occupied by something and won’t be able to take over as needed, when it determines the current condition requires you to be able to. I get that whenever I’m eating a burger with both hands while FSD drives. Just free up one hand and slightly nudge the wheel is enough to convince it that I’m able to take over if needed usually suffice.

Maximum_SciFiNerd 2026-02-18 11:16

HW3 here, I wish they would release an update to fix the wipers. It's annoying when they turn on by themselves after engaging FSD and smear the windshield.

Solaphobe 2026-02-18 14:03

I find that random swipes largely go away if i keep the outside of the windshield in front of the camera cluster cleaner. When I start to see random swipes, I give that area some attention and it seems to help a lot.

YouKidsGetOffMyYard 2026-02-18 15:52

That's not new, I think it's been around since the at least the 13.X days. If you have something in both of your hands and it can see your hands it eventually gives you a warning. It takes a while but even holding a water bottle with both hands will eventually trigger it.

Austinswill 2026-02-18 16:34

I don't know why they cannot get the Nag right. Now I will say I am speaking from HW3 experience. And in that experience, I have had instant strikeouts for looking away... there was no audio warning, there was probably some visual indications on the cluster screen... but no audio. And I have intentionally taken a strike to see what happens and I get a red flashing Cluster screen for about 2 seconds, followed by a BEEP BEEP BEEP and the strike... Why in the blue FCK dont they simply have an audio warning that begins and increases in intensity over about 3-5 seconds to alert the driver??? I really want to grab whoever came up with the nag programming and ask them WTF were they thinking.

Dos-Commas 2026-02-19 14:31

I highly doubt they'll do anything for HW3 now that Autosteer is removed from new cars. They've demonstrated that profit takes priority over customer goodwill.

Bocephis 2026-02-20 18:33

The nag feels like a "paying attention" meter that has to be filled. When i start a drive, I can't like at the screen for a second. After a while, I get more time to look over. It's a shame, I like to start FSD with no navigation set and then set it as I am heading out of the neighborhood.

Normal_Choice9322 2026-02-23 20:14

Autopilot supremacy continues

Tall-Memory-6021 2026-02-25 03:24

they’re so bad. i do nothing but adjust music and nav on the screen, and i go probably 1 week a month on FSD suspension

DrPeppehr 2026-02-26 06:17

Same, suspended twice now. Its frustrating cuz i wear a hat so sometimes it tells me to grip the steering wheel rather than look at the road. And if I read the full message on the nav its risky lol

Jolly-Bell-240 2026-03-03 13:36

huh, i've definitely noticed less nags lately, especially on my usual highway route. maybe they're finally figuring out the sweet spot.

Mediocre-Honeydew-55 2026-03-09 22:49

I stopped paying for FSD when I realized it was nagging me more than my wife did and I can get that for free.
