Shhh don't tell Reddit. The hate bots will try to convince you otherwise.

damonlebeouf 2026-02-09 16:36

no surprise. they’ve dialed in their vehicles. once you get something so right over time you perfect the manufacturing and service for those vehicles. they were a mess when they first started but close to no change over the course of the 3 and Y means they’ve got them right.

Puh thats even cringe for me.

https://www.adac.de/news/tuev-report-2026/ I am Just letting this cook Here. Tesla scored last in germanys necessary car checkup. (But is the only car in the list where the manufacturer does not recommend a car workshop service every 2 years)

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-09 17:10

Wasn’t this for older model cars?

Particular-Bug2189 2026-02-09 17:13

I read a translation and this talks about the same problems as the Danish data: suspensions and brakes. The brakes problem can most likely be avoided by the consumer with better education. The suspension problems are not insignificant, but will not shorten the life of the car imo.

I mean, I can talk crap about the build quality and little annoyances but Tesla really figured it out. In the 5 years we’ve had teslas we’ve only had very minor issues that relate to rattling, or some other random thing. But, none of it took away our ability from driving our cars and they always felt reliable and solid. Going to Lucid, Polestar, Audi and Volvo in my extended family, we’ve had 7 EVs and all had pretty major issues. 3 qualified for lemon law, literally. The other 3 had huge recalls that still haven’t fixed problems and annoying bugs. In retrospect, I’d much rather deal with the Tesla ownership than non Tesla. It just isn’t seamless now and the more software layers that are introduced, the more issues.

Logitech4873 2026-02-09 17:38

? This is Reddit

goldenhornet 2026-02-09 17:41

Except they are constantly changing the spec ever so slightly, or even not so slightly.

stockhounder 2026-02-09 17:42

"The ranking, published on February 6, 2026, evaluated early problems reported in 2025 on vehicles registered in France since January 1, 2018, with fewer than 150,000 kilometers on the odometer, as noted by a Numerama report. This marked Tesla’s first appearance in the magazine’s reliability rankings, which was enabled by the company’s growing vehicle population in the French market."

goldenhornet 2026-02-09 17:44

Shame their sales dropped by more than a third (37%) over the last year.

late2thepauly 2026-02-09 18:26

Compromised report from German legacy automakers.

arveena 2026-02-09 18:42

That's 100% a german tüv problem they fail everytime for the same reason "Bremsenbild" which means the breaks rust from not beeing used. I does not pass the TÜV because of it. But its an issue thats first not really an issue because if you break hard it goes away. And secondly easy to fix. But most people never fix because it does not hinder them at all. Also just the German tüv let's car fail because of it. Its super strict I failed ones because I had a small chip in my window. Which I never noticed. So every tesla falls through the tüv. You then break hard for a few weeks and its fine you go again and you pass. But still you failed your first one. VW mitigated the problem by going back to drum brakes which are insanely inferior but the pass the TÜV

stockhounder 2026-02-09 18:51

I can't find the original sources with the data but I do find the choice of constraints a bit weird. Does anyone have a link?

Middle-Gas-6532 2026-02-09 19:07

It's not just that. It's also the suspension. It becomes very loose at the bushings.

arveena 2026-02-09 19:12

Before highland yes but still nothing that effects the car longterm like suggested here

Middle-Gas-6532 2026-02-09 19:19

Doesn't matter, a fail it's still a fail. All other manufacturers don't fail as much.

stockhounder 2026-02-09 19:36

I couldn't find anything more. Ranking is done based on the number of self-reported damage reports sent specifically to the email address soslecteurs@autoplus.fr versus the publically reported number of sales. So a total lack of reporting or engagement with the magazine works in favour of that company's reliability. Question is: how many Tesla owners subscribe to Auto Plus?

sim16 2026-02-09 20:35

A conundrum, a seriously poisonous Musk sickening the reputation of Tesla, which is making great cars.

starkiller_bass 2026-02-09 20:45

To be fair, Highland hasn't been around long enough to know how the bushings hold up over time.

AP_in_Indy 2026-02-09 20:45

That’s the joke

AP_in_Indy 2026-02-09 20:46

I only ever hear great things from people I know who own teslas so this doesn’t surprise me. Multiple years of ownership and never needing anything more than fluids and tires changed.

damonlebeouf 2026-02-09 21:10

tell me you don’t understand manufacturing without telling me you don’t understand manufacturing.

kaspar42 2026-02-09 21:11

The mandatory 4 y safety inspection in Denmark had a super high fail rate for both TMY (45%) and TM3 (34%). Average for all EVs was 7%. https://fdm.dk/nyheder/nyt-om-trafik-og-biler/tesla-skandalen-fortsaetter-naesten-hver-anden-tesla-model-y-dumper-til-syn

_Layer8Admin 2026-02-09 21:50

As somebody else posted: Tesla scored last in Germanys necessary car checkup and as an Austrian, I can confirm that my Model S sucks ass when it comes to the suspension. The car on it’s own is semi reliable (had some issues with the AC, 12V battery, etc.) but the suspension is a horrible mess that costs me a ton of money year over year, and I’m not even getting it fixed at Tesla to save money. Control arms, sway bar links, tie rods - one of those parts fails every year (I hope those are the correct English terms). Let’s see at which point my shock absorbers will fail and how much that’ll cost me. According to Tesla it’s like 1k€ per wheel - my bank account might need some antidepressants if this comes up (2016, Model S 70D)

Den_Ouwen_Belg 2026-02-09 22:12

Uhm, yes it will? Cars are failing those tests after only 2-3 years, and it has a direct impact on the road safety of the car.

Den_Ouwen_Belg 2026-02-09 22:12

And Danish car makers as well?

DaIubhasa 2026-02-09 22:19

LOL what can you expect from TESLArati dot com

KymbboSlice 2026-02-09 22:35

The only fluid to replace is the washer fluid. No oil changes necessary.

deeperest 2026-02-09 23:20

No oil, no tranny fluid, no timing belts, no weird shit you've never heard of. Brakes and tires need to be maintained, and yes, the washer fluid. Air filters are a pain, but no biggie.

travyhaagyCO 2026-02-10 03:14

The one thing i heard endlessly before owning our Y is that you have to replace the tires every year. The original tires lasted 50k miles. We have had almost no issues with our Y or S.

Putrid-Box4866 2026-02-10 05:39

How much would the replacement of 4 tires cost? Did you rotate your tires as well? Is that even needed?

Saintcanuck 2026-02-10 05:48

The French will do something too hurt Tesla in courts

tenemu 2026-02-10 06:36

Do you expect Exxon or Toyota to post this news instead?

DaIubhasa 2026-02-10 07:30

Yes capt obvious

dtpearson 2026-02-10 07:32

Brakes should not need any maintenance as 95% of the braking comes from the motor regen. Pads are basically a lifetime part. They DO suggest you test the brake fluid every few years, but not doing that will just cause the brakes to be a little spongy on big stops.

rivensoweak 2026-02-10 07:43

thats actually the problem, the main thing that often needs repairs are the brakes as they arent being used often enough, when i got my m3 the tesla employee told me that you should atleast perform 1 strong brake per week in order to keep the brakes working

Wetmelon 2026-02-10 10:04

> Let’s see at which point my shock absorbers will fail and how much that’ll cost me. TBF these are only designed for like ~100000 km on any car. They're a wear item that needs to be replaced regularly. Same with bushings, though sounds like yours are being replaced too often

_Layer8Admin 2026-02-10 10:12

Yeah, I get that, but the shock absorbers are hella expensive, that’s the issue I have. Even tho mine are doing their job for well over 100k km (260k on the clock atm) - they’re probably the best part of the whole suspension. But as you said: My “wear and tear parts” need to be replaced too often. There has not been a single yearly check that I passed without any part of my suspension failing for the past 3 years - most likely my misery will continue this March, let’s see. I’m praying haha.

Ambitious5uppository 2026-02-10 10:41

Because this magazine decided not to include suspension or brake issues as part of reliability. But only on Teslas, they included suspension issues on other cars.

Devayurtz 2026-02-10 13:48

Why does this have zero upvotes? Bots and nonsense. Chinese EV bots absolutely murder anything EV related that isn't about their authoritarian-funded junk.

Alibotify 2026-02-10 14:08

Remember when the Tesla community in my country first talked about this 10+ years ago. Funny how it’s still believed by some to not be used and then still wonder why brakes still are high up in the list of service appointments. Edit: The magazine also excludes brake and suspension problems in the reliability rankings so this doesn’t mean shit.

On the opposite side, Tesla are the vehicles with more defects in the [danish](https://www.torquenews.com/18004/almost-half-tesla-model-ys-fail-mandatory-inspection-denmark-and-norway-says-european-tesla) and [german](https://electrek.co/2025/12/03/tesla-model-y-named-worst-car-for-reliability-germany-major-tuv-report/) obligatory inspections. Yet people brag about a highly limited biased article in a french magazine.

SJATheMagnificent 2026-02-10 16:29

There has never been a concerted bot effort to claim the cars are awful.

Although it’s kind of funny. Before they fixed the automatic wipers, I used to joke that I only needed wiper fluid but I got 10 mpg in wiper fluid.

Donkey_Apple 2026-02-10 20:13

Agreed. What issues did your family have with those other brands?

Electronic_Load_3651 2026-02-10 20:14

On our Polestar we had the ac/dc inverter fail 7 times and it’s a common issue. Volvo it’s the software and backup camera. Audi is just overall not great and Lucid it’s the very buff software and their maps.

Purple_Concentrate64 2026-02-11 03:16

I heard the android auto on Volvo is hot garbage

Purple_Concentrate64 2026-02-11 03:17

Oh wow, if it's so that's messed up Though I'm amazed Denmark is so rigorous that almost half the population of a 4 year old car has reasons to fail their safety inspection. Unless all those cars' owners were really bad on keeping up with basic maintenance like tires and brakes. Well I heard that brakes last forever in Tesla

Electronic_Load_3651 2026-02-11 05:40

You mean android automotive? It’s not bad at all, works much better now on Polestar 3 and I’m sure EX90 is same given that it’s same software stack. It looks clean, but I’ll say that it isn’t as refined as Rivian and Lucid in terms of UI/UX. Like for example, why does it always insist on taking up space to show me that I’m in performance mode or to adjust one pedal driving? Like after you get used to an EV, it’s a set it and leave it setting essentially. Or how much it spams SiriusXM is lame. And you can’t uninstall it. You can disable, but when the car reboots, it’s enabled again.

s33n1t 2026-02-11 07:04

I for one prefer my brakes to work properly. It really isn’t hard to flush the brake fluid.

MoeCipo 2026-02-11 09:36

I was worried by this too, but as you said if you really look into it, the failings from the TÜV are just dumb. Here is one example for M3 and i think thats awesome: https://preview.redd.it/5u3guj6a5uig1.jpeg?width=944&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa1c23bb3cfa56a736b9dd4f46f6cc491b0ef2d3

SJATheMagnificent 2026-02-11 09:37

I just searched ‘tesla’ in r/cars and the only thing I found was a comment about phantom braking. It wasn’t hateful at all.

All of these links are to posts that are in fact about quality concerns. As are the upvoted comments. I see a lot of criticism, but no ‘hate bots’

Quin1617 2026-02-11 20:24

That’s the nature of the internet. In real life the owners I know are quite happy, all of the negativity I find is online. Same with Cybertruck, I know people who hate the way it looks but that’s just normal subjection. Like how I’m seemingly the only person who likes Crown Vics.

Quin1617 2026-02-11 20:34

Same for my car, and it’s a 21 year old sedan. Though admittedly I always go the cheaper route.

Purple_Concentrate64 2026-02-11 20:58

That's good to hear. The little design oddities sound like Volvo or Google aren't the best at designing car UX.  I heard on the previous gens, the Android Auto would crash and you'd have to shut the car off just to get the center screen to come back (or just look up the secret button combo to restart ), or the backup camera would fail, etc.  For Siriusxm is the problem simply that the icon is there or does it butt into the whole OS as well?

Electronic_Load_3651 2026-02-11 21:03

Yes prior versions are awful. I wouldn’t want to own a car with that OS version. On this one, it’s better and overall looks good for them. However, it’s not comparable to Lucid or Rivian. It isn’t as intuitive nor is as cohesive with less functionality and a ton of redundant steps. Specifically to confirm what you’re asking it to do. I’ll say that I haute SiriusXm so that plays a role haha. But, for the first few weeks it’ll have an audible message when you get in the car after the car has been off saying something like “hello! Your seriusxm trial is active, tap the icon in the app drawer to learn more and take advantage of it”. This is without ever opening it! It was awful. They’ve only added this to newer P3s seems like. Eventually, it went away. But now it’s present at all times in the quick launch bar. I don’t have the issue with it being under the app drawer, but it’s in the quick launch bar as you’re driving. You have 3 recent apps that are displayed there for quick access. But one of those spots is always occupied for SiriusXm, even though I’ve never used it!

ElliotAlderson2024 2026-02-11 23:51

Don't care, I don't trust electric car batteries in my garage.

snakefighting 2026-02-12 01:53

Had to sell my Rivian and go back to Tesla MY Performance. The Rivian was in the shop more than I drove it. Tesla is by far number one!

Foreign-Draft-1715 2026-02-12 05:22

Same for the mandatory TUV inspection in Germany after 3 and 5 years. Tesla did terrible.

smarzzz 2026-02-12 06:12

Source?

Purple_Concentrate64 2026-02-12 19:25

LOL! That SiriusXM bloat is a travesty. Now not even cars are safe from it, good lord. And if somebody had a sleeping baby, the freakin automatic ad is going to wake them up every time. I can't imagine if Gramps bought that car. He might not even have fighting chance of disabling the ads. And it's not even a cheap car, it should have zero ads. Also, the Volvo infotainment design sure doesn't sound very Scandinavian. xD Sounds very poorly thought out. I don't like some ways Android does things, like how notifications block a 1/4 of the screen. They used to only take up the notification bar area as a scrolling ticker. Google doesn't seem great at design, so I am leery about trusting Google to design a car's control system, but I've heard Apple also makes weird design choices so nobody is safe from crappy designs. 😆 Maybe I expect too much and some designs I would like or feel are "smart" would be hated by others. It sure is interesting the variety out there. I feel like if somebody had the money, why would they choose the P3 if it has a vastly inferior control system? Well I never got to try it so I wouldn't know. It is just that a traditional car with buttons never changes those buttons up. The touchscreen interface can be broken, changed, or fix in any software update and Google doesn't have the best update reliability track record with their Pixel phones (they take ages to fix bugs). They're all focused on AI Datacenters now to care about consumer electronics, IMO.

Electronic_Load_3651 2026-02-12 20:01

That’s why I hate SiriusXM so much. It is definition of bloat. My friend had a jeep grand Cherokee and they put a bunch of car functions behind SiriusXM subscription. Even getting something like a hotspot required subscription. And if you didn’t get it, they’d spam your infotainment each drive about it. So imagine my annoyance when a car with MSRP of almost $100k was spamming sirusxm ads. I was close to requesting out of it if it didn’t stop. Volvo/Poletar outsourced all software development to Infosys who are known to be awful and that’s when all of their software issues with new cars came to head. They’ve now moved it back in house and are working towards bringing all of the branches down to one. Which, helped a ton. I’m also very much all about good ui/ux and I hate majority of car infotainment. The one in polestar actually looked good to me overall, it had good feel and personality to it. And I’d never want to own anything with ford, or Kia software. I think lucid and Rivian are just much more tech geared which is where you get to the next level there. But asa whole, what Polestar 3 has works well and looks good. Display is also great quality.
