The body panels are plastic of carbon fiber. Most cars with such panels have larger gaps.
It's also just validation testing for the vehicle. Something every single manufacturer does before making a new vehicle public.

All things being equal, for whatever reason, people like using good looking things over shitty looking things. One could argue that was one of the reasons for teslas success. All of their cars look freaking cool compared to a Chevy bolt or a leaf. If waymo looks cool and Tesla looks like shit and they are price about the same, people will gravitate towards Waymo

Industrial design is one of the ways you can measure a society's progress. You start putting out ugly looking cars it looks bad.
The Polestar 4 has the same design. There is no rear window. They just put a camera pointing backward and project it onto a screen inside the car. A lot of ppl have had issue with it initially because in the Polestar the camera isn't even that great of a camera so you can see the pixels, but people eventually get used to it. For some this is a dealbreaker.
The cab looks like it was designed by the same 5 year old that designed the Cybertruck.

yes the model s has been the same platform for a decade, however most cars do not get a full redesign after 5 years, that is only common in high volume sellers. the porsche macan is on its same platform since 2015 and just got an ev variant, the 4runner just got a new platform for the first time since like 2008 or something insane same with the tundra. the charger just got a new platform for the first time since like 2012, the nissan gtr is on the same platform since like 2004… it really just depends on the car and market pressure. the model s was the best selling ev in its class of car and got regular facelifts and modernizations, in 2026 the car still looks and feels modern, imo the tech is good they just need to upgrade the features and quality. I don’t know off hand but the model s got about 3 facelifts, also tesla doesn’t do model years and each car gets iterative updates throughout every year.

But it doesn’t. It looks weird. There’s this awkward flat barren rectangular panel of empty space between the bumper and the light bar. It looks like when someone has a really big forehead. It sticks out and a designer would avoid this for pretty universal design principles. Luckily the rest of the car is pretty nice looking. All modern cars have some oddities in their design that don’t age well. That said the Y looks 100x better than the Cybercab.
Waymo looks dorky but instrumental and not pretentious. The car in this picture looks like a low budget wal mart sci-fi video game.

i think the problem is the lack of window. if you reimagine this with an all black roof i dont think its that bad. maybe swing the lightbar lower. but not saggy like ioniq6 or or mercedes cla

Honesly the vast majority of people hailing a cab will give two shits about the vehicle's design. Is the inside clean, is it punctual, is the fare affordable, and is it going to get me where i want to go is the most people will care about.

well in this case I would wonder how much part (frame) reuse is coming from model 3/y and if this is a simple function of form solution. Like it how much more time/money would be spent vs getting tooling up and going to pump these out. Also the long term durability of this vs a rear windshield also place a factor, among other things. Total speculation from my point, but might have some factor to play.
The rear window delete is fine imho, it's the abrupt end to the tailgate which has to affect aerodynamics (extreme turbulence) and just feel it could be executed a bit better
