Spotted in Phoenix AZ

FitForThrone | 2025-12-07 23:17 | 528 views

Spotted this in PHX. Guy driving said he works for Tesla and signed an NDA but they are testing "something". Top of pole has little camera lenses pointing in different directions. Thought it was interesting, reminded me of Google street view. Sorry if this is a over saturated topic! Lol

It’s how they validate FSD maps or whatever.

xDURPLEx 2025-12-08 00:11

It’s a test car with lidar. They use it to have something to measure against the FSD system to grade its performance.

tenemu 2025-12-08 00:31

It’s posted like every week but all the posts are titled “what is this thing” or “what is Tesla doing?” So it’s unsearchable.

RTdodgedurango 2025-12-08 00:49

They're here

jwrig 2025-12-08 01:26

They are doing the final validation for robotaxi, which is supposed to start a closed beta in a few weeks. Hopefully, the competition will drive down the cost of Waymo rides even more.

Dismal-Stock-1424 2025-12-08 01:50

Yeah bro and i don’t accept his/her apology for posting an oversaturated topic. I suggest 3 lashes and a hunnit hours of community service in North Korea, i would say we punish them properly but im feeling a little forgiving today /u/FitForThrone you report tomorrow at 0500.

Big-Truth4080 2025-12-08 02:37

as far as ik, all tesla employees sign an NDA at hiring

FitForThrone 2025-12-08 02:47

Will report cap won't happen again!

Interesting1thing 2025-12-08 02:57

It’s lidar because Tesla is mapping. Yep Elon lies. Elon lies. Incredible anyone believes Elon

SirLauncelot 2025-12-08 03:45

This is all public information. They have permits and such. It is public.

tbiscus 2025-12-08 04:13

Saw one this past week in Dallas/Ft. Worth area...

obsidian009 2025-12-08 04:50

OPE

Wuwu03 2025-12-08 05:04

Looks like a nice enough place to get drunk and smoke cigarettes.

FitForThrone 2025-12-08 06:07

This is my favorite spot for that actually

TonedBioelectricity 2025-12-08 06:31

I originally thought lidar too, but close up shots show mostly (if not only) cameras. Might just be extra angles or something

GreenNotYell0w 2025-12-08 07:31

Saw two of these driving back to back in the SF East Bay. My best assumption was that it was a verification method against Tesla's fsd

Aggravating_Skin_307 2025-12-08 08:40

I've seen a car before... is this new thing for you?

Maconi 2025-12-08 10:04

They use it in areas they’re trying to get extra FSD data on (especially in CyberTaxi areas).

FitForThrone 2025-12-08 10:06

Cars with silly car tech poles on top?

Yuva1s 2025-12-08 11:56

Those are validation cars with Lidars, doing work 9n each city where Robotaxi is about to be deployed.

Aggravating_Skin_307 2025-12-08 14:55

Ever heard of a waymo taxi or seen one the Google mapping vehicles

cadium 2025-12-08 16:18

So its similar to others using HDMaps for their autonomy?

Omacrontron 2025-12-08 16:24

Yep, everyone uses something a little different looking. Tesla is using LiDAR in those towers.

Otto_the_Autopilot 2025-12-08 16:39

Nobody outside Tesla really knows despite the litany of confident answers you'll get here.

Available_Win5204 2025-12-08 19:35

No

IsopodSuspicious3859 2025-12-08 19:54

Just another way for Tesla to use drivers to gather information for fee , that Tesla can later sale …

FineSupplements 2025-12-08 21:22

Its just somebody using their tesla to do google maps ya’ll

Possibility-Exotic 2025-12-09 03:10

Competition to WayMo ! Driverless customer Transportation. 😃

Possibility-Exotic 2025-12-09 03:12

Its in Austin Texas , side by side with Waymo . 😃

jwrig 2025-12-09 13:35

OP says it's in PHX.

Mcroa7 2025-12-09 19:42

Correct regardless of role

Possibility-Exotic 2025-12-10 03:36

Sorry… Should have also in Austin Texas . 😃

Puzzled-Sir-7727 2025-12-10 04:05

My dumb ass thought the sign was attached to the car lmao...

jwrig 2025-12-10 15:18

Ahh ok. So I take it that robotaxi is cheaper than waymo in Austin?

CaliAzian 2025-12-10 17:59

Yeah, they've been testing in the Valley for a while now. Caught them in Queen Creek/STV a couple months ago: [https://x.com/jessgoldberg/status/1981149007981531593](https://x.com/jessgoldberg/status/1981149007981531593)

d34dfr34k 2025-12-10 19:10

Judging by the position of the cameras, can this be a way to validate FSD on something bigger, like a Tesla Semi, without having to meet the risk and permit requirements for a semi?

OneRobuk 2025-12-10 21:08

saw a few in Tempe as well about a month ago

NormalParticular5890 2025-12-11 07:52

Data validation

danieltt630 2025-12-11 13:42

Yes it is by almost 50%-70% because to get a Waymo in Austin you have to use the uber app which is a hit or miss but a $12 Waymo(uber) ride would be like $3.60 in a Robotaxi

Efficient_Post6331 2025-12-11 17:23

It’s lidar.

jwrig 2025-12-11 21:02

Nice. In PHX waymo is usually a couple dollars less than a Lyft or Uber because that's their competition right now.

Possibility-Exotic 2025-12-12 06:44

Almost! 😃

CaribbeanLivingMTN 2025-12-12 14:10

They don’t use lidar any more.

eatmynasty 2025-12-12 20:39

Yes.

ArmoredDragonIMO 2025-12-15 06:42

I recognize South Mountain, I still own a house at the foot of it but I've been living in California while working at a space company. I'm estimating that's on Southern, but what other street?

FitForThrone 2025-12-15 15:07

Baseline and 16th St. :)

ArmoredDragonIMO 2025-12-16 03:25

Ah that's why. I'm so used to driving down 24th towards it, where the skyline is a bit higher
