FSD Is now available to all HW4 cars in New Zealand (and Australia)

Matt_NZ | 2025-09-17 22:35 | 347 views

We've seen plenty of FSD in Australia with press vehicles and a handful of influencers, but as of today it's now out on a wide release. I'm guessing HW3 will not be getting a release until they figure out the hardware upgrade path. I'm assuming the V12 models do not have any RHD logic.

Only for those who purchased FSD outright though - subscription-based FSD is coming soon, according to Tesla.

Matt_NZ 2025-09-17 22:57

Yes, that's in the email screenshot above...NZ$159 a month (probably less if you have EAP already)

as0007 2025-09-17 23:03

Is this for all HW cars or just the ones who have brought? It talks about access to all cars and then also talks about subscription.

Matt_NZ 2025-09-17 23:04

You will need to have purchased FSD or soon, subscribed to it instead

deanylev 2025-09-17 23:04

The old V12 model is maintained/updated separately to V13, for example 12.6 came out after 13 was already out. That means they might release 12.6 or e.g. 12.7 here at some point for HW3.

OriginalGoldstandard 2025-09-17 23:06

Hey man, WE aren’t in the brackets….NZ is the brackets country to us!!! /s

Matt_NZ 2025-09-17 23:06

Right, but are there RHD v12 models? I wouldn't be surprised that they may not have bothered with putting that work into V12

Matt_NZ 2025-09-17 23:07

I was waiting for an Aussie to comment 😉

as0007 2025-09-17 23:08

Now the wait for subscription begins LOL

OriginalGoldstandard 2025-09-17 23:09

🤣 the real story is we are in the same brackets.

augustuspeebelby 2025-09-17 23:19

so when the f will hw3 owners get it?

deanylev 2025-09-17 23:25

There wasn't a RHD V13 model until they created one, I don't see why they couldn't create a V12 one

Matt_NZ 2025-09-17 23:27

I just don't see them going through the time and effort to redevelop old code at this point. It's probably going to be cheaper for them to just replace the hardware

deanylev 2025-09-17 23:34

I see your line of thinking, but I can't imagine developing an entirely new part to retrofit HW4 in old cars (since HW4 currently has a larger board and incompatible wiring) and retrofitting tens of thousands of cars just in Australia/NZ is cheaper than training a new V12-based model which they can then release as a software update. For people with a HW3 car who didn't buy FSD outright, we were promised the cars were FSD-capable at purchase. They are certainly not going to retrofit HW4 for free in that instance, but not providing FSD at all would be false advertising. Therefore I personally think there will be a RHD V12 model either way.

Matt_NZ 2025-09-17 23:44

Oh, it almost certainly won't be HW4...most likely HW5 or 6. I mean, I hope they release a limited version for RHD HW3 as well, but I'm not expecting that they will.

dtpearson 2025-09-18 00:26

Yep, subscription not available yet. I have a 2024 M3P that had the FSD transfer from a 2019 one and it got the update but the wifes 2025 Y does not have the option of subscription (it does not have FSD purchased). Both are HW4. My experience so far was like the smoothest limousine driver I have ever had for my 15min drive to work this morning. Roundabouts especially were perfect (and it even indicated correctly!). Speed was perfect, lane keeping perfect, distance from car in front perfect etc. It really does feel like my car is now 5 years more advanced at self driving than it was yesterday. Its deeply, incredibly, impressive. That said, I do wonder how they will ever work out the really odd stuff when it is fully unsupervised. For example there was some works being done at a pedestrian crossing in town, and a tradie in high vis was standing in the middle of the pedestrian crossing, but waving cars through. How will it know to go through the pedestrian crossing with a pedestrian clearly in the middle of it? Will it have to learn "Annoyed gesticulating tradie hand movements"? What if he was not moving, but saying drive through? Will the car have to understand speech? It also wanted to drive the wrong way out of a carpark down a bottleshop drive though that I know is one way, but it is not signed as such, I just know that it is because I have never seen a car going the other way. How will it work this sort of stuff out? It's like it needs AGI to work out odd situations, and we are not there yet.

dtpearson 2025-09-18 00:28

And $149 per month in Australia.

Fixtor 2025-09-18 00:33

In two weeks /s

singletWarrior 2025-09-18 00:36

How many hw4 in nz I wonder… highlander + juniper maybe just over 2k?

Matt_NZ 2025-09-18 00:43

Looking at NZTA, it's around 2780 (990 Model 3, 1790 Model Y)

ChunkyThePotato 2025-09-18 01:00

You have to pay for FSD.

1sw331 2025-09-18 01:09

Will tesla offer trail period around December?

redkulat 2025-09-18 01:09

AUD and CAD are basically on par...but in CAD it's $99...i know Australia always gets screwed but for something like software, seems odd why it's not closer to $99 as well.

Kuklachev 2025-09-18 01:13

It’s not FSD. It’s “FSD (Supervised)”. Because it’s not really full self driving.

Quin1617 2025-09-18 01:21

It is self driving, it’s just not autonomous meaning you have to supervise. Planes fly themselves, but the pilots still have to watch, as they’re not autonomous.

EVMad 2025-09-18 01:38

It's not code, it's an AI model. They have models trained to run on HW3 in the USA, they just need to train a model for NZ that runs on HW3. Makes sense to focus on the HW4 model first but they'll need to put something out for us HW3 guys who bought FSD 6 years back. From what I've seen of 12.6 in the US, I would be very happy to have that on my car but it's a matter of priorities and training data. I expect getting good training data for NZ and Aus cars is hard rather like they had trouble finding data where people actually stopped at the four way stop in the US.

Cimexus 2025-09-18 01:42

In this case it’s Canada getting a huge bargain. The Australian price is basically exactly the same as the US price ($99 USD). Canada getting it for $99 CAD is a steal, in comparison.

Personal-Ferret-9389 2025-09-18 01:48

I bought FSD in 2021. Am yet to be able to use it in my model 3. And unlikely to be able to any time soon due to HW3

_vkboss_ 2025-09-18 01:51

This is the 1st time I've seen Australia in brackets and not New Zealand lol.

icy1007 2025-09-18 02:02

I believe every HW4 Tesla owner in NZ/AU gets a 30 day trial of FSD.

icy1007 2025-09-18 02:03

Never lol

icy1007 2025-09-18 02:03

No, it’s every HW4 Tesla. They all get a 30 day trial.

Low-Inspection-6099 2025-09-18 02:07

What about the rest of Europe? Is Australia the only European country to get it? And what about NZ's neighbor Austria? /s

filmagnoli 2025-09-18 02:11

There was push back when they tried this with the entertainment connectivity rate before. It’s $9.99 AUS/month, when they originally offered it at $14.99 people bitched to Tesla & they dropped it to $9.99 local currency, which is what they were doing everywhere else. We should ask for the $99/month local currency (AUS$) in this case too!

Matt_NZ 2025-09-18 02:12

Well, as a New Zealander, I wasn't about to put NZ in the brackets was I? 😉

Ashdown 2025-09-18 03:17

I am a little confused with this, I have a 2025 model three, I do not have advanced autopilot. It seems that the common wisdom is that people who have paid for the most expensive package I getting the updates, and those who who haven't got advanced autopilot are not yet getting the update. But I can't see anywhere that Tesla has actually said that. Does anyone have any heart and fast information about if things are ring fenced or what's going on?

Matt_NZ 2025-09-18 03:19

Yes, you need to have purchased the FSD software package to receive this. It's not a free upgrade. In NZ, the upgrade is $11,400

Ashdown 2025-09-18 04:40

Ah I see! So the upgrade will be rolled out more widely whenever the subscription rolls out. And we have no detail on that.

_vkboss_ 2025-09-18 04:54

Fair enough! :)

Matt_NZ 2025-09-18 04:55

Well, yes, but only if you pay for the subscription (in a HW4 car)

Ashdown 2025-09-18 05:10

I shall wait with my HW4 2025 model 3 then :D Thank you!

Aptosauras 2025-09-18 06:03

Canada is closer to the USA, so freight for the FSD (Supervised) is cheaper.

webignition 2025-09-18 06:05

Around the same time as UK drivers get it ...

HenryLoenwind 2025-09-18 06:15

Please don't confuse what the system can do with what is road-legal.

4iedemon 2025-09-18 08:05

No trial for me

Embarrassed_Survey_3 2025-09-18 08:13

To be fair I think Tesla should think about doing something similar to what Ford is doing in Portugal. They design a system for hands-free driving only for specific highways (most used ones). This enabled Ford to partially push the product out, because let’s be honest, Europe roads are not linear like US. Especially in Portugal everything is twisted and turning without proper signaling, there is no way FSD will ever be usable.

[deleted] 2025-09-18 08:18

????? Australia is in the other fking side of the world, definitely not European. AUSTRIA is not AUSTRALIA 😅

Matt_NZ 2025-09-18 08:35

If a person can drive on the roads then in theory, a computer can too. Eventually

Opposite-Bench-9543 2025-09-18 09:41

Elon: We never had HW3, all Tesla models started with HW4 :)

[deleted] 2025-09-18 09:45

I couldn’t be less interested in this. I barely even use the cruise control after a few phantom breaks and late breaking in peak hour traffic on the freeway.

FreeZombies 2025-09-18 09:56

FSD works just fine in Europe if you know some magicians from Ukraine :) But you can always find few friends, buy train ticket / hotel for the guy and he will gladly install FSD :) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0ffCJFrgbM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0ffCJFrgbM)

TooMuchTaurine 2025-09-18 10:20

Honestly it doesn't really need to be able to go fully in to private car parks to be unsupervised. They can just program it to always stay on streets.

TooMuchTaurine 2025-09-18 10:22

Those are completely gone in fsd.

shaggy99 2025-09-18 14:01

brakes, braking. You should check out some of the Australian/NZ people who already got it, they are almost all blown away by how smooth it is.

shaggy99 2025-09-18 14:04

I wouldn't be so sure. I'm not 100% convinced it can work ***everywhere,*** but it's doing some amazing things.

shaggy99 2025-09-18 14:07

Well, we don't have a **definite** date, but soon. Price **is** known, $149 AUS or $159 NZ. Unless they get the same deal Canada got if there is enough pressure. EDIT: and so far HW4 only, which makes sense, as the version 12 branch won't have had RHD mods. You can also (for now) transfer to a new car and HW4.

Movie_Slug 2025-09-18 14:20

I’m bothered that you call those brackets.  They are parentheses.  Brackets are [] or{}.

gzmonkey 2025-09-18 14:38

In China HW4 owners got FSD back in March, and even now HW3 still haven’t gotten anything. Don’t keep your expectations up. People on Chinese social media are pretty pissed since the majority of cars on the road are still HW3.

jNSKkK 2025-09-18 18:31

Aren’t {} braces, not brackets?

burnt_heatshield 2025-09-18 18:36

(parentheses) [brackets] {braces}

ZychuTheGamer 2025-09-18 18:38

And it's obviously a subscription...

Fixtor 2025-09-18 19:46

This pisses me off so much. Us HW3 folks are those who fucking built Tesla. They didn't need advertisements, because we were the ones giving people rides and spreading the word. We often also invested in the stock. We've been loyal to Tesla, and they treat us like shit. Either buy a new car or stfu. And no, I'm not some random hater, my post history proves that I've been a huge fan for over a decade, but my patience has run out.

pauljohn92 2025-09-18 19:54

I don’t think it’s personal though… HW3 simply does not have sufficient processing power to satisfy regulators 🤷🏻‍♂️

Dr_Pippin 2025-09-18 19:57

Uh, no it's not? It's NOT available for subscription (yet), this is only for outright purchases.

jNSKkK 2025-09-18 20:05

Indeed.

dtpearson 2025-09-18 20:12

Definitely not yet if that is the case. I have a 2024 M3P highland that has fully paid FSD and it has the update, and a 2025 MY and it does not have fully paid FSD, and there is no trial, no option for subscription, basically no way to get the download without seemingly having to pay $10k.

Fixtor 2025-09-18 20:13

Then upgrade our cars. That was the promise: if it's needed, they would upgrade the hardware. Now they are delaying it as much into the future as they possibly can, and cars are getting closer and closer to the end of their lives. How many more years do we have to wait?

dtpearson 2025-09-18 20:13

Correct, I have two HW4 vehicles and the one with the $10k FSD option has the update, where the other one I cannot get the update at all.

webignition 2025-09-18 20:33

Curved brackets (), square brackets [] and curly brackets {} are perfectly fine descriptors to me.

Matt_NZ 2025-09-18 20:42

gzmonkey 2025-09-19 01:34

Saying this as an American, my next car with be a local Chinese car, their versions of FSD are often either free or at much lower cost and the interiors and other features tend to be better than Tesla. Tesla here has out right lied to me directly in a few instances and really lacks any sort of customer service which generally isn't the case at Chinese brands.

Seaker42 2025-09-19 03:27

I read about detailed testing China did with 60 self driving cars - the 2 Tesla's they used came out 1 and 2. Yes, the Chinese options are cheaper, but even tests run by the Chinese government showed Tesla's are the safer FSD option.

gzmonkey 2025-09-19 03:33

Have a link to the study/testing?

shaggy99 2025-09-19 04:10

If you're in Australia you have the option now to transfer to a new model, and you won't have to spend what $14,000 AUS. If you're in the states you will possibly get another chance as well.

What if I don't want a new car? Then can they keep their promise?

Beneficial_Ad_5732 2025-09-19 08:53

Just went for my first drive in Melbourne. Absolutely bonkers. Rush hour in and around St Kilda / Prahran / South Yarra on a Friday night and it was flawless. I have seen the videos, but wow did not expect that. Zero interventions tons of whack situations and it confidently went about its business. Wtf

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xumyEf-WRI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xumyEf-WRI) The test was conducted by Dongchedi in conjunction with CCTV (China's state-run broadcaster), and also with the co-operation of provincial authorities to shut down a large stretch of a national highway for the testing. English subtitles are available.

jillbinoche 2025-09-20 09:43

Do you have to drive upside down?

dtpearson 2025-09-21 21:35

Probably about 10 hours total on FSD Supervised so far and not a single phantom brake/slowdown incident. It is not just smooth, it's like a limousine driver smooth. Not saying its perfect though, it can get caught out if other drivers are doing really unexpected things (eg the P plater driver in a Landcruiser doing about 80kph in a 50 zone coming into a round about that made the Tesla have to slam on the brakes, but to be fair, I would have done exactly the same)

plumpturnip 2025-09-22 08:21

Elite areas (am Australian)

JamMydar 2025-09-22 13:13

The crux of this is that Tesla made a claim on their website that HW3 would support full autonomy (SAE level 4). Many people bought cars because of this, some people even bought FSD. Muskrat may have promised that he'll upgrade those who purchased FSD on v3 hardware but there have been no reports that anything has been offered to drivers until Tesla ships unsupervised FSD. Who knows when that will happen and if those people will even have their cars by then?

FancyMoose9401 2025-09-22 22:14

😂👌

[deleted] 2025-09-23 04:31

I don’t mind it making mistakes in general, but the slamming on of breaks at 100kmph is a bit of a deal breaker. End up sitting there constantly anticipating it - find it less stressful just driving it myself

dtpearson 2025-09-24 00:32

And it is completely gone with FSD with the update to FSD.

ultramoo1 2025-09-24 20:19

I bet they intentionally not releasing it for HW3 to promote sales on new vehicles. Too bad. If it was available right now on HW3 I may have bought it for $10k. I am not interested in the new model 3 because it's missing some important features. After my warranty runs out in a year, I won't be spending 10k on the FSD. Too risky. I'm surprised my 2022 model 3 performance has dropped so much in value, it's only driven 66k km bought it for $96k now only worth $35k.... $20k drop a year. EVs just don't hold value any value.

I've not heard that about HW3. There's a rumor going around that HW3 isn't capable of keeping up with the object tracking in the worst case driving conditions in china where conditions in many places means 100s of motorbikes and bikes around at some intersections which is preventing approval.
