I hope they allow retrofits.

I was pretty bummed the Cybertruck didn't come with a 5G modem since it's basically a tech showcase......but after a year, I can't think of a time I was really wishing the speed was quicker What would really be nice is integrated Starlink so I can use other devices with it, and the connection doesn't go out in isolated areas.

kids-See-Gh0sts 2025-08-31 18:47

Why are you linking a post from February? It’s already there in new vehicles sold

wolfrno 2025-08-31 19:09

Wasn’t that the Covid shot?

Bigrosey707 2025-08-31 19:10

For the price of the cybertrucks they should have had integrated star link

Pro_Vita1925 2025-08-31 19:14

Only if you got the 5g vaccine + boosters

feurie 2025-08-31 19:39

You’re acting like starlink was some tiny addition and the Cybertruck was massively profitable. No $100k vehicle has it.

quetiapinenapper 2025-08-31 19:49

I have no idea if I missed the cutoff for my juniper and when it was made. I keep meaning to check but I keep forgetting where you go to look. Edit: got off my lazy ass and checked. I have it. To anyone wondering. Go to software and hold on the text for “model xyz” for a while. When you release it a prompt comes up. Type service. Then go to infotainment and connectivity. Modem is there.

ken830 2025-08-31 19:50

I mean the Cybertruck is pretty "cheap" for what you get. Huge battery, 4 wheel steering, steer by wire, power frunk, powered vault tonneau cover. The Model X, by comparison has a much smaller battery and less equipped for much more money. My 2022 was nearly $130k, which was $140k out the door.

Capable-Reach7509 2025-08-31 19:55

I’m with you on retrofits. All 3 of my teslas were ordered with FSD and it is not what was promised since 2019 to us. Rather have more mobile friendly cars with further coverage

Xaxxon 2025-08-31 20:23

Remember when the cybertruck was supposed to be special? Now it's just another middling $100k vehicle.

[deleted] 2025-08-31 20:47

For what?

colinstalter 2025-08-31 20:58

I wonder why they've dragged their feet on this. I also wonder if their carriers throttle Teslas. My 2020 Y is dreadfully slow, even with full bars.

BatWhen 2025-08-31 21:01

So my song won’t cut out mid way?

TurtleCrusher 2025-08-31 21:34

Starlink antenna and a router is constantly advertised for $80 where I live. They could absolutely be integrated in the roof of the Cybertruck.

ILikeWhiteGirlz 2025-08-31 21:39

4G has better reliability in spotty areas anyway.

SpaceCadetHS 2025-08-31 23:40

In my case I would want 5G not for speed, but because a lot of the 4G LTE spectrum was repurposed to 5G in my area so the car goes through A LOT of dead spots where music stops working and the maps fail to load for minutes.

CriticalBasedTheory 2025-09-01 02:54

lol @ huge battery Tiny rivian r1t comes with a bigger battery. Silverado EV dwarfs the cybertruck battery. It’s literally one of the worst parts of the cybertruck.

BlueShift42 2025-09-01 03:03

I owned a 2015 Model S that came with 3g and was able to upgrade it to 4g through the service center. Hopefully we get a similar option to go 4g to 5g.

ken830 2025-09-01 03:11

I meant relative to the Model X, which has ~100kWh versus the Cybertruck at ~123kWh for significantly less money.

AmbitiousFunction911 2025-09-01 05:48

And your model X was extremely overpriced. And it was just $70,000 18 months ago and is less than 30k on the resale market.

ken830 2025-09-01 06:39

Sure. But then how does that translate to the Cybertruck should have built-in Starlink? Even at today's prices, the Cybertruck is still significantly cheaper and better equipped than the Model X.

Logitech4873 2025-09-01 07:22

What does this have to do with 5G?

billm0066 2025-09-01 10:52

Im guessing download speed??

Logitech4873 2025-09-01 10:53

Yeah but 4G is already really really fast haha. There's no service a Tesla even can provide that needs faster speeds.

Independent_Ad_4271 2025-09-01 11:29

Plus 800v architecture for faster charging. Just so damn ridiculous looking

BatWhen 2025-09-01 13:15

Songs sometimes just stop playing out of nowhere on LTE

JellyBearBlue 2025-09-01 13:20

I have February 2025 Tesla Model 3. Chat am I cooked?

Logitech4873 2025-09-01 13:44

Doesn't have anything to do with LTE though. That could be caused by anything between the server and the car.

BatWhen 2025-09-01 13:45

5G will get the song loaded faster hence reducing the chance of break of server browser handshake

Logitech4873 2025-09-01 13:50

Buffering solves this. 5G won't.

snark42 2025-09-01 14:57

5G can get data to buffer faster and have a better signal most of the time.

Annual_Wear5195 2025-09-01 16:08

That just points to the X continuing to be overpriced.

Pattont 2025-09-01 17:51

I’d rather have a starlink node built into the roof :-)

ken830 2025-09-01 18:33

Sure, but how does that imply Cybertruck should include even more features (Starlink) when it is a much better value (costs less and is more feature-rich) than other vehicles from the same manufacturer?

555thisguy 2025-09-01 21:03

Retrofit a CD player ? That'd be cool.

Dull_Apple1455 2025-09-01 21:30

I go by same dead spots in San Diego.so annoying iSwitched to Consumer Cellular which uses AT&T. Went by the dead spot, pulled over and rand a speed test on my phone. I think it was 2 mbs. Unbelievable

ReefKeeper918 2025-09-02 13:57

Not necessarily. 5G requires far higher density for cell towers. It’s unlikely to do anything for you traveling via car on the highway. For what it’s worth, I use my iPhone to stream music to my car and it DOES have 5G and it STILL cuts out from time to time. 5G really isn’t all that it was promised to be, because the cell coverage is not dense enough. LTE uses a lower frequency and can thus travel further distances than 5G ever could. Also, often when your phone says 5G, it’s actually using LTE. It’s a gimmick. Basically 5G is available, but signal strength is better on LTE so they failover to that but still display 5G on your phone. Also, even more of a gimmick is that 5Ge IS “enhanced” LTE. 5Ge is a misnomer.

ReefKeeper918 2025-09-02 14:02

The first statement is true. But 5G doesn’t have better signal strength. Fun fact, just because your cell phone says 5G, doesn’t mean it’s actually using it. It just means it’s “available” but often it’s still using LTE or enhanced LTE which is ironically named 5Ge.

snark42 2025-09-02 14:48

I don't know what network Tesla uses, but on my phone if I limit it to 4g/LTE I often get a weaker signal than allowing 5G with T-Mobile. Could be the modem on my Pixel 9 though.

FaudelCastro 2025-09-02 15:08

Even then, 5G is more future proof. Every year carriers will keep switching spectrum from 4G to 5G.

svswen 2025-09-02 22:11

What's the benefit of 5G over 4G? Is there any real application rely on 5G?

10xMaker 2025-09-02 22:12

Probably going to be useful when they have car to car communication or for robotaxi remote operator to take control

[deleted] 2025-09-03 01:46

Ooh fancy

Spaceboy-14 2025-09-03 20:47

I want starlink

mdharrington 2025-09-13 04:53

Subaru has starlink on their sub $30k vehicles
