CNCDA added hybrids to their Q2 report and Tesla still keeps the top 2 slots

Radium | 2025-07-23 03:31 | 43 views

This quarter the CNCDA added hybrids to their quarterly report which previously only had ZEV and PHEV and Tesla still held the top 2 slots, beating the Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V and RAV4 hybrids with both the Model 3 and the Model Y. https://preview.redd.it/2jx1dcqbmjef1.png?width=787&format=png&auto=webp&s=0d7778cff65977029c6942c956f439ae321ec83c [https://www.cncda.org/wp-content/uploads/Cal-Covering-2Q-25.pdf](https://www.cncda.org/wp-content/uploads/Cal-Covering-2Q-25.pdf) Previous Q1 report for comparison: [https://www.cncda.org/wp-content/uploads/Cal-Covering-1Q-25.pdf](https://www.cncda.org/wp-content/uploads/Cal-Covering-1Q-25.pdf)

So Model Y still outsells ALL the other non-Tesla ZEVs put together in this list. And that is after the sales have cratered for Tesla. My question would be - given Cali, why are other ZEVs struggling there?

yetiflask 2025-07-23 14:42

Another thing I noticed, YTD thru June Rivian dropped more than Tesla. As a RIVN stockholder, WTF. RIVN should be all over the market being lost by Tesla's downfall. Why isn't R1S filling the gap being left by MY. This is really bad from Rivian.

Radium 2025-07-23 15:28

I don't believe they are struggling, when Tesla makes up a huge chunk of all ZEV's and they take the biggest seller (Model Y) way below peak production for 3-4 months YTD it caused ZEV's to "struggle" while people waited for the new one to ramp up. It was a planned reduction in production to ramp the new version. I'm now seeing new Model Y every time I go driving here in San Diego. They're selling like crazy.

Because an 80 thousand dollar plus truck/SUV is not replacing a 50k crossover.

yetiflask 2025-07-23 19:06

Right, but still. They can give discounts or something. But their numbers are NOWHERE NEAR Tesla's

yetiflask 2025-07-23 19:09

But why'd people just not buy other ZEVs while Tesla is paused is my question. Californians are craaaazy about ZEVs, so they should just eat up what others are cooking

Up until recently they only produced models that start around the $70k mark for their lowest trim R1T. Maybe they’ll be more competitive with the Model Y market with the introduction of the R2 which starts at $40k, but after test driving an R1T, I found that only being able to use their FSD features on select roads to be a very limiting factor for the vehicle and their sound system is on par with an ‘89 Nissan Sentra. It sucks because I like their design and interior so much better than any Tesla (especially the Cybertruck) but those were deal breakers for me.

yetiflask 2025-07-23 23:22

Fair. TBH, despite being a letdown when compared to its own expectations, Tesla's FSD, despite being vision is head and shoulders above any other cars. I have driven many (but not Rivian), and Tesla is on another level. Of course, nowhere near their own aim, but compared to other cars. I don't know about Chinese cars though, maybe they are superior in self-driving. I don't know if Rivian's system is in-house or off the shelf. NN-based or hard-coded, these things are a money sink, and likely Rivian simply doesn't have the resources. I am actually looking forward to VW's Scout (?) brand, let's see how they do.

I’d really like to see if the BYD lives up to the hype, but I’m American and will probably never even see one in person.

Y'know, I think I should rent it some time. Not a bad idea.

[deleted] 2025-07-26 16:19

Coz they suck

[deleted] 2025-07-26 16:20

Bad product and overpriced. Rivian is fast approaching its great filter moment.

[deleted] 2025-07-26 16:21

Hyundai already testing an Ioniq 2 and they didnt even sell 10k Ioniqs? Jeez

yetiflask 2025-07-26 20:47

In what sense. Just curious to know. I always thought of Rivian as the little Tesla. Overpriced, I guess I can understand, it's expensive.

yetiflask 2025-07-26 20:47

From what I understand BMW electric offerings are good, no?

[deleted] 2025-07-26 23:02

Bmw yes. But very expensive
