They've been saying they'll increase the price for years now. But they haven't. I suspect Elon will say smt like they will give people a couple more months to lock in the current 10K price before increasing it with full scale roll out.

Cost me NZ$6000 nearly 6 years ago. It's a lot more than that now of course, I basically paid what it costs for enhanced autopilot which is pretty much all I've had for the last 6 years anyway. Hopefully they'll do an AI upgrade to actually make the thing work.
We'll have to see, but im not convinced that there will be a price increase here. They've reduced the price of it in the US rather than increasing it over the last few years.
Interesting, pretty overlooked with this is the fact that Australia and New Zealand drive on the left-hand side of the road.
RHD is likely not such a big issue. Step 1 is to flip the core library of American videos and do the first training run. Then start curating local differences, such as the Melbourne hook turn, to refine the regional training. Apart from step1 it is the same process for every region, hence the need to keep doubling the training compute power.
I really hope they give us a trial period it’s not stonewalled by a 10k cost from day zero. Would also be great for their language model and general data collection if everyone had use of it
I'm curious to see how it will handle Christchurch's lack of turning signals at intersections that requires you to rush your turn between the orange and red lights while hoping the oncoming car doesn't try beat the red.
I’ve been incredibly impressed with the free autopilot on HW3. It basically drives itself on long distance drives. The FSD model has been improving for years, and is far better still. Especially on HW4 (and next year, HW5). People keep making fun of Tesla for the self driving tech but it’s actually really impressive, and gets better with every update.

So… I think they just have to swap the wires on the left/right cameras and mount the CPU upside down.

It gathers data from what humans do in situations where it's not active, as well as disengagements. In other words, tesla doesn't need someone buying the FSD package to improve the behaviour of FSD. If the US is any guide they might have a month trial period, or a subscription based model as an alternative.
Yeah I took up the EAP option when they first offered it in 2020.
In Australia, and I guess the rest of the world, legacy FSD which is at about v3 or v4 has continued to improve. Not so much with features since traffic light and speed sign recognition but in refinement. Phantom braking is much reduced and same for pogoing in stop start traffic. There has been new features too, such as apexing corners, edging over for large trucks and better handling of lane splits and merges. However some of these features disappeared while beta and supervised were running in the background. Very recently some of these features have come back. Tesla did continue tuning of the old software based FSD.
dont know if i can trust it yet. my car still chimes me i can go straight when it is red but with a green light to turn.
Fortunately FSD is watching for traffic more than traffic signals and is most concerned for pedestrians. Once a few cars are truly autonomous, the road infrastructure will start to conform around it, just as it did when cars replaced horses. I guess it will be decades before all of the hairy corner cases are resolved.
In the last few months I think they stopped running Supervised in the background here in Australia. I noticed that some previously dropped features have come back, suggesting that compute power has been returned. Besides, noticing what the driver did different from what FSD would have done is only half of the training; the negative half. They also need the positive confirmation that FSD is doing the right thing, which they can only get where a driver doesn't take over. Testing in the last few months will have mostly been from employees quietly using FSD Supervised in the wild.
Here in China HW4 has had FSD since the beginning of the year and HW3 has received nothing. Be ready to be left in an infinite state of limbo. No one at Tesla wants to say what’s happening.

Are you serious? There is no way that FSD has significantly improved in Australia. I had a 2019 M3P that had FSD that slowly improved for the first 2-3 years, but for the last 2-3 years there was no real improvement at all other than a few more features (eg, bing on green lights). My new 2024 M3P with FSD is barely better at just driving down the road than my old car was in 2020 (half a decade ago). Phantom braking is only slightly improved since then, and still happens on every drive for me. And there is no way that it apexes corners, I still have to take over frequently on some corners, because it will make it, but siting right on the centre line almost hitting oncoming cars if they are apexing the corner. It also does not edge over for large trucks at ALL, no matter if the truck is almost in my lane.
That’s terrible that Tesla has had your $10,000 for all these years on a promise that may or may not be delivered.
$6000, but it's the same price as EAP here so it's OK as I have all the same features. If they keep their promise to upgrade the AI hardware we're good.
I agree it is not a significant improvement, only that there has been ongoing effort and it has improved. I have only seen it apexing some corners in the past, in country areas, notably down the Great Ocean Road. It didn't happen often enough to trust it, but it reflected work that was being done in America before v12. V12 was much better but it also lost some features. Typically I do also see it drift wide on tighter left hand curves. This is a latency issue. On regular drives I disengage going in to known quirky situations. Nothing happens so quickly that I cannot react but definitely need to be watching and ready to take over all the time. Even so, I have found FSD to now be less tiring and safer than not using it where it works (straightish runs), particularly on the highway. Since v12, they dropped newer features, even speed sign recognition, in order to run v12 in shadow mode on most cars, this gave the impression that work had stopped. It hadn't but improvements in one area were often accompanied by regression elsewhere, perhaps deliberately. As a driver it was haphazard, but as a software developer it was progress despite short processing capacity. Before v13 it wasn't certain that they wouldn't have to go back to the old software so some work continued on the old code. This improvement all resurfaced a few months ago when it appears that they stopped running Supervised in shadow mode in Australia. A lot of conjecture here. We each get to see different things because the environment is different and we lean on different past experience.
Think you’re oversimplifying things. Signage are not all universal across the world - some vary by state, and some by suburb, even. There’s also the tram network in Melbourne where cars have to stop behind the tram when letting off passengers and the model of trams vary significantly from 1950’s vintage ones to now, and they all vary with different lights. I’m sure there are very similar issues in the US, but it’s not as simple as mirroring the NN.
Tesla agrees with you. With little in the way of regulatory hurdles they still missed the intended Q2 launch in Australia. Handling the hook turn suggests they are now well past my step 1.
Completely different software controlling the chime vs running FSD. You can't use current AP as a benchmark to where FSD is at.
I feel like in my case my car will see end of life before they upgrade any hardware. As an American, I regret not buying a local brand here in China. The competition offers pretty close to the same thing as FSD and overall better service.
Based on past behaviour, Tesla supports their vehicles way longer than anyone else. While AI4 and AMD aren't drop in replacements, there are enough HW3/Intel cars out there for them to be planning on an upgrade path and from what I see even HW3 FSD still performs way better than the competition although I haven't tried any of the Chinese alternatives not that any FSD equivalent is available on any car here, just lane keeping mostly.
There would 100000% be data gathering from FSD scenario’s as well, the system isn’t perfect There are times when human interaction is needed, the more data Tesla has for those situations where FSD can’t be relied on, the better it is for the quality of the product
Bought FSD in 2019 when the first model 3’s dropped here in Australia, at the time they advertised AP on city streets coming Dec’19 , well played Tesla, one of the biggest scams of all time, I bought a 2024 Model Y to get ready with the next HW ( lol only to find out it’s still has HW3 , what a Fck’ING joke, Now that’s all over , there is nothing in the competition like a Tesla , that’s the most frustrating thing.. I’m damn stuck with it, because it’s so good a car
Great, another "announcement" although this appears to hold slightly greater merit than the last decade of announcements. Any news on HW3 upgrade "announced" last year? Or will that be re-announced and then kick the can down the road some more. Happy to be wrong though and I hope I am.
I think HW3 will be waiting a while. Tesla have confirmed previously that HW4 will be the first vehicles that FSD is rolled out to. Some reports today hint that might be as soon as this Friday.

What you see in screen is completely disconnected to what the car actually perceives in fsd. The neural net that runs the screen visualisation is a completely separate neural net than the one driving the car and making decisions about the environment and how to drive.

Yes in FSD software, the screen rendering is purely cosmetic and connected too an old neural net. When the software stack moved to end to end neural net in version 12 FSD, what what visualised and what was being run in the car to drive separated. The fsd software neural net is also separate from the inbuilt car automated safety warnings like collision and lane exit alerts, which is why on occasion fsd driving itself can trigger these alerts.
