Grok Is a Pointless update like I feared

[deleted] | 2025-07-14 23:59 | 119 views

Looking at the FAQ for the new Grok update coming confirmed what I didn't want. It's just bloatware with no functional purposes vs idk owning a phone.

then dont use it ig

DrPotato231 2025-07-15 00:52

Oh no, one more app on Tesla that you can choose not to use. Anyways…

Bderken 2025-07-15 00:56

They just released grok 4. I think they are making more specialized models to make the tool calls for each cars feature. It’s kinda hard to do that. Only some models can properly call tools/api/etc. So my guess is, once they figure out how to make that model/flow call the correct function, then it will work. But idk how they are going to do it so take my words with a grain of salt. My guess is: 1. Voice transcription model -> small LLM -> tool call (like adjust AC) Or 2. Voice transcription model-> big grok model that can make the tool calls. Idk but I work on ai models everyday trying to make shit like this work and grok is in our queue now

delabay 2025-07-15 00:56

I listen to a lot of history and finance podcasts. I'm always spinning up a chat gpt session to explain topics and I'm delighted to see native integration to the car. It will only get more features.

cav754 2025-07-15 00:59

I just want a simple calculator I can yell at when driving. Does this mean I get my simple calculator I can yell at when driving?

Stephancevallos905 2025-07-15 01:00

No because OP believes it's useless so no one gets it

LionTigerWings 2025-07-15 01:01

Is there any chance they’ll have ai voice transcription universally. The built in stuff current is like 2010 voice transcription bad. Random punctuation. Everywhere.

Decent-Gas-7042 2025-07-15 01:04

Pointless right now sure. But the voice commands it has built-in are ok but haven't improved in years. This could be really useful, we just need a few iterations

KforKaspur 2025-07-15 01:06

If Im driving to a place and wondering if it's closed on Thanksgiving because I forgot to check beforehand, having a hands free option of checking is nice If I'm going to a new city im not familiar with and want to know places near where I'm heading that is popular with the locals, I can ask it what's Poppin hands free If I'm noticing a place is being constructed on a local street but it doesn't show what's going to be built there I can ask it what's going in there If I had an accident during a road trip and got bit by something, I can ask it what it was the bit me and the things I can do to alleviate the symptoms on my way to the hospital I mean I'm being weirdly specific here but there's a plethora of reasons you would use your phone/Google for, and having a conversational bot using your cars compute to look this up hands free is going to be useful. I get the "but it's AI" crowd but unfortunately whether you like it or not, Artificial Intelligence is coming, and it's best to get used to it and incorporate it in your life because it makes it so much simpler to do a lot of different things you couldnt before. I am currently learning another language and having a conversation partner at all is going to be a huge advantage, I can practice my speaking while driving for 0 time loss gains on my learning. While it's not exactly the largest update or the most impactful update Teslas put out, I'm going to find use of it and enjoy it

b_m_hart 2025-07-15 01:07

It’s just another way for Musk to milk Tesla for money.  How much is this costing the shareholders?  Cuz you know that this isn’t free for Tesla.

hakimthumb 2025-07-15 01:09

I wonder what would have made them happy.

WorldlyOriginal 2025-07-15 01:11

Grok’s voice transcription is really good. It (and others) are a lot better than the prior generation (Siri, Alexa, etc.)

[deleted] 2025-07-15 01:12

My argument is not saying grok (or conversational AI in general) is useless. my argument is that if you are a grok user you can just use your phone anyway. If it's not actually going to influence how I use my car then I don't really get the point

feurie 2025-07-15 01:13

Cool. Don’t use it. I won’t either. So it doesn’t affect me. Why should I care?

LionTigerWings 2025-07-15 01:13

Yeah. I’m sure it’ll be using that when you’re talking grok, what will it use when you’re trying to send a text? My guess is that for now it’ll continue to use the old shitty transcription.

asds999 2025-07-15 01:14

This is incredibly useful. Not a pointless update at all. Plus , it doesn’t technically affect you if you don’t want it. Why complain about this?

[deleted] 2025-07-15 01:14

I'm hoping that is the case. What I think would be really cool is if they could integrate it into the cabin camera and for example the rear passenger wants their seat heater on they can say (hey turn on my seat heater) and have the car recognize who said it and subsequently perform the command instead of just being another device that I already have that functionality on

asds999 2025-07-15 01:15

It’s much more dangerous to use your phone while driving. Why would you actively promote a more dangerous way of using AI? You shouldn’t be on your phone while driving….

[deleted] 2025-07-15 01:16

Both siri and Google assistant have this functionality. My annoyance is not with AI but with its lack of integration with actual car functions

Krunk83 2025-07-15 01:16

I don't get why this is useless?

feurie 2025-07-15 01:16

Wait what? You think Grok knows what the locals like? You think Grok is going to know every building being built? If you get bit by something you’re going to run to your car to ask it questions verbally? No, it’s not better to get used to it. All AIs are still stupidly overconfident nowadays.

bsears95 2025-07-15 01:17

Long term plan is to have it control the vehicle functions when requested, but this is "grok (beta)" for Tesla. It's a car. It's easy to have small mistakes make big issues so they are being cautious with what they allow it to do. It's far from useless right now. It can do everything you can do on your phone except it's hands-free so you can continue driving instead of breaking the law by using your phone.

WorldlyOriginal 2025-07-15 01:18

OP must be part of the (sadly) large chunk of the population that doesn’t have much curiosity or wonder about random questions the way that many of us do. I have random inquiries go through my head all the time. “We just passed a monument for X. Who’s that guy again?” “When does the NFL season start?” “Are paprika and cayenne the same thing?” “How far is it to drive from Chicago to Miami?” “What movies are playing in the theaters right now?” “I heard there was flooding in Texas. How far is it from Dallas where my cousin lives?”

[deleted] 2025-07-15 01:19

Iv explained this already

mandopix 2025-07-15 01:19

Because people like to complain about stuff that they can easily ignore.

TaifmuRed 2025-07-15 01:20

Will it call ICE automatically if someone who is not white is driving the car?

WorldlyOriginal 2025-07-15 01:21

Ah. I see what you’re saying. To be fair even the PHONE companies havent solved it yet. Apple Intelligence for Siri is just starting to get there. I’m sure by 2026 Google, Samsung, and Apple will have the latest-gen transcriptions integrated. No sense getting angry about Tesla not having it yet, when they’re one or more steps removed from texting compared to the phone companies

chiphitter 2025-07-15 01:22

I don't want MechaHitler in my car.

1startreknerd 2025-07-15 01:22

How is it useless?

Putrumpador 2025-07-15 01:24

It's there now. Lurking. Waiting.

TimJay22 2025-07-15 01:24

I don't plan to turn it on in my car.

iteafreely 2025-07-15 01:25

Iteration. First get the link running and solid in the real world. Then work on the more complicated/fraught integrations. Seems a reasonable approach to me.

chiphitter 2025-07-15 01:26

I haven't received the update yet but yeah, you're right.

Mishkafilm 2025-07-15 01:26

This is great ! Can’t wait to get it in my update

Irocko 2025-07-15 01:26

[deleted] 2025-07-15 01:28

I can use Gemini for 95% of what I would need to know while driving hands free already

EyesOverTexas1993 2025-07-15 01:28

I got the email but the update hasn’t been pushed to my model y…anyone else?

k1rd 2025-07-15 01:29

I will use it. I always have random things I want to know while I'm driving and don't want to check my phone.

NCpoorStudent 2025-07-15 01:34

Can I download the auto wipers update by any chance? I am more interested in fixing my wipers than another LLM on my face.

Decent-Gas-7042 2025-07-15 01:37

That would be great. I'm hoping you'll be able to give it very specific parking instructions. I pick up my elderly parents in my Y now and I often use summon to bring it to their side door. But it ever comes quite close enough. It's a little thing but if they want to be a taxi you need that stuff. Grok in the car could be great.

starkiller_bass 2025-07-15 01:41

I’m honestly OK with sandboxing Elon’s pet project AI before I let it have full access to my vehicle controls

Rollertoaster7 2025-07-15 01:44

Yeah as long as it has gps access so it can answer questions with the locality in mind this could be very useful

Virtamancer 2025-07-15 01:48

Tesla is following the Google/Android approach, which actually ends very quickly (months) with the LLM serving as the natural language interface to the device’s functionality, replacing the old voice layer. The first step, as with Android and Gemini, is to get the LLM working on the device. Then they use “tools” (an LLM thing, essentially just functions in a program) to allow it to do the things that the old voice layer used to manage. Tools are super easy to code, and Grok 4 is designed from the ground up to handle tools. The trick is that, natural language and LLMs being non-deterministic, they have to test it to a point where all the main functionalities execute reliably. I would expect this to be integrated in a handful of months.

KforKaspur 2025-07-15 01:49

Considering I use ChatGPT and Gemini for the same functionality? Call it wishful thinking

KforKaspur 2025-07-15 01:50

Even if it doesn't I can provide that context like I do with other conversational bots

veritas2884 2025-07-15 02:08

I disagree with your take. Especially if you have kids. Being able to chat with basically the world’s source of knowledge or have it make up interactive narratives is incredibly fun to do in the car with the kids. I have also put Grok into voice mode on my phone and had in depth conversations or planning sessions with it for work and then had the whole transcript available once I got to where I was going. Getting this build into the car is going to be very convenient for me.

bsears95 2025-07-15 03:03

So the AI on your phone is useful and the AI on your care is useless because the one on the car came second?

[deleted] 2025-07-15 03:11

No, as iv already explained. My complaint is not with grok, or even with AI in general. My complaint is the lack of actual integration with the cars functions. If it could also take the place of the default voice commands and expand upon them I think it would be far more helpful.

cav754 2025-07-15 05:23

Dude, just give up on it. A rain sensor costed Elon way too much money to install so we get AI that acts like it’s in a hurricane when the sun hits the windshield and no activation in an actual hurricane. And that isn’t a joke, drove in two hurricanes and the wipers wouldn’t activate, but you better damn well believe they engaged immediately the next clear and sunny day after.

b1tchell 2025-07-15 06:36

I’m annoyed that we can’t get it here in the UK.

ServeIntelligent8217 2025-07-15 07:41

Companies do MVP releases all the time…the major features like controlling your screen, features of ur car, and navigation (first use of AI for navigation?) will come likely in 2026. But they’re goona announce a new chip in 2027 and by that time you’ll have cheaper cars, robotaxis, and FSD unsupervised. Good to invest now.

jrherita 2025-07-15 09:41

OP doesn't get it

bsears95 2025-07-15 12:19

Gotcha. Thats not clear in the main post with the "pointless" and "bloatware" terms indicating that it's useless in your opinion. Not that it's equal to your phone. Thanks for clarifying 👍 (maybe it's made clear in comments to others, but not in the original post)

[deleted] 2025-07-15 12:49

This!

Admirable_Web_1252 2025-07-15 12:59

I haven't seen it in action yet. Does it just give you updates on the news etc? Or can you ask it to open your windows, lower the air conditioning, drive you to a location, etc?

[deleted] 2025-07-15 13:09

In my original post my whole gripe centers around the idea that grok doesn't really add any functionality to the car that my phone with AI doesn't already have. If Tesla had decided to flesh out the integration a little more by phasing out their antiquated voice command system And allowing more in-depth commands in addition to all that grok is already good at. I think this could have been a home run, but since that's not the case this update comes off half baked

philupandgo 2025-07-15 14:08

I'm prepared to wait and watch how it evolves. If they ever get it doing useful things in the car, I will still be dubious though. Why pay a subscription for server side control of car functions and never be sure if it is going to do what was asked. Surely the auto wipers has demonstrated that it would be better to stick with some C++ directly in the car and know it will work every time. If your toolkit only has an LLM in it, then every job looks like an AI problem. The world was simpler five years ago. If Grok is only ever intended to answer philosophical questions then I might be just as happy to spend my small subscriptions budget somewhere else. I'll wait and see.

ArthurMidian 2025-07-15 14:38

This comment has greatly offended me. Let me speak with your manager!!!

dubie4x8 2025-07-15 14:47

I imagine it’s just like our phone’s smart assistants, but now it’s just built into the car and I don’t have to shout “Hey Siri!” only to have her answer with “sorry, I can’t do that right now.”

whitemiketyson 2025-07-15 15:49

It does not interact with any car functions in this current iteration.

stuzor66 2025-07-15 15:50

You can do this already with the voice command "search Google" and the Google search will calculate for you in the browser popup. Though you have to read the answer it won't speak it

whitemiketyson 2025-07-15 15:50

These use cases are only helpful provided the information returned is correct. I have no faith that it will be so I am in the same camp as OP. AI hallucinates way too often to be useful.

KforKaspur 2025-07-15 16:05

Well to each their own, I've had incredibly great luck with other language models, I've never tried Grok but from the surface it looks like the model is pretty good at what it does but is filled to the brim with controversial content. As long as I get what I'm looking for I'm happy and if I don't, I just don't use it. No big deal

AdviceWithSalt 2025-07-15 20:01

He means using "Hey Google" or "Hey Siri" and having a conversation that way.

Magnus_Tesshu 2025-07-15 20:58

> I’m sure by 2026 Google, Samsung, and Apple You'd think, but LLMs have existed for 3 years almost and Alexa, Siri, etc are all still pretty shit It wouldn't surprise me if Tesla finishes first

Magnus_Tesshu 2025-07-15 21:03

Grok 4 link about a random building near where I live (thought for 67 seconds): https://grok.com/share/bGVnYWN5_12b8a651-e434-486c-b665-b8b1ce86ca19 Grok 3 with an instant response with basically the same content: https://grok.com/share/bGVnYWN5_886ba731-b021-444c-9438-86140f627152 > No, it’s not better to get used to it. Some people just don't want to try things or for them to work.

craigl2112 2025-07-16 11:50

I disagree. Just had a 20-25 minute conversation with Grok on the way in and it's actually very impressive -- dramatically more useful than Siri. Hopefully they ditch the internal voice controls for Grok sooner than later!

MindStalker 2025-07-16 12:11

Most AIs don't make for good calculators, they often are wrong and you don't know when they are wrong.

itshukokay 2025-07-16 17:54

I guess you could ask it business information about a place you drive past. Other than that I can't think of a practical use. Probably won't ever until Musk gets his way and Tesla is acquired by X entirely.

MetaWhirledPeas 2025-07-16 19:05

You do not want \*any\* chat bot controlling your car without an extensive ad-hoc-and-explicit permissions arrangement. Chat bots are inherently unpredictable, fallable, and foolable, and bad things would happen pretty quickly if they had unrestricted access. The reason phone bots can do \*some\* things is because you can stare at a phone screen, read a disclaimer for a specific desired action, and agree/disagree to the action. The best I could see Grok doing as far as controlling the vehicle (again, with EXPLICIT PERMISSION before each action) would be actions you can already do with voice controls, such as navigation, texting, and so on.

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2025-07-16 20:24

I can’t think of a practical use for myself. I’ll probably ask it a couple dumb questions, and then never use it again.

mjuevos 2025-07-17 00:12

find grok to be quite useful actually..

red19plus 2025-07-17 03:46

Having a fit because a free update isn't useful for him and making a whole post about it...oh and there are also other cool features under 2025.26.

red19plus 2025-07-17 03:54

I guess some ppl think the world revolves around just them and other ppl's opinions don't matter, i.e self centered or entitlement.

Snoo93079 2025-07-18 01:38

I'd love to have Gemini in my Rivian. Not sure why you think a LLM tool is useless.

punfire 2025-07-18 02:08

I’ll be using for things like: can i turn right on red in North Carolina? Can i park on opposite curb in Seattle? From what age can kids be left alone in the car in Florida… Can be very useful, but i wish they started integrating with car: activate carwash mode, find an alternative route avoiding stop lights, turn left mirror back up (in reverse)

mchinsky 2025-07-18 13:44

It's 'interesting', but after using it for about 45 minutes, I don't see how it's really any different than having your phone connected via blutooth and using Gemini or ChatGPT voice modes. It's the same thing except the microphone is better and it has cute visual animations on the screen. If I'm bored driving and I want to ask it a question, it's great for that stuff due to the simplicity of using the steering wheel button, but it's no game changer. If it was integrated into the car, that would make it 3x more useful. Also, I find the language tutor interesting, but it speaks the foreign language too quickly understand and repeat what is being said.

mchinsky 2025-07-18 13:45

It's also only has 3 voices. The default, Ari is perfectly fine. The first male (forget name), sounds robotic, and the 2nd one called 'lazy', sounds stupid other than a parlor trick so you really only have one decent everyday voice.

mchinsky 2025-07-18 13:50

I agree, although having to lower the volume of your stereo, then hit your AI button (or speak command) and then get answer through a phone speaker (unless you were already on Bluetooth) isn't as simple as just pressing and holding a button on the steering wheel and all just working. That being said, I agree, it would be about 3x more useful when (if?) it's properly integrated into the car's systems. Google has the jump here as they have already done a lot of work making Gemini do things the Google Assistant used to do (but it was a painful road). Grok was never part of a phone OS, so they will have to go through that whole process. Hopefully it doesn't take a year like it took Google.

Warm-Tour9099 2025-07-18 15:59

Like everything this will get better and batter with time and usage

Whoop_Rhettly 2025-07-18 21:19

I didn’t get it. Bummer.

Zachstresses 2025-07-19 01:31

Idk, man. Grok got extremely sexual with me earlier, so it was good for laughs. 8/10 update.

[deleted] 2025-07-19 15:46

This is likely just Elon making use of his public companies to drive revenue and distribution to his non-public companies. First xAI licensed tweets for X, and then xAI just acquired X. Now Tesla is licensing Grok from xAI… So obviously they have not put any effort into integrating it properly in the car. So it’s likely some engineers at Tesla got told Elon wants Grok in all Teslas by next week and so they did what he asked for.

[deleted] 2025-07-19 15:48

I've already explained this in previous replies, but because it doesn't actually have any functionality to do with the car. It's just talking to an LLM for the sake of talking to an LLM

[deleted] 2025-07-19 15:49

That's exactly my point.

[deleted] 2025-07-19 15:50

As soon as they ditch the antiquated voice controls I'll be satisfied

HollywoodSX 2025-07-19 16:10

Ironically, it used to work a lot better when it didn't try to add punctuation automatically.

Opposite-Knee-2798 2025-07-19 16:10

*cost https://grammarhow.com/cost-or-costed/

SirBill01 2025-07-19 16:11

Your understand is about two years out of date.

SillyMilk7 2025-07-19 16:12

Yep, a hands-free tour guide or concierge would be a use case. Someone mentioned using story mode and having it act like a podcast for a topic they're interested in. I'm definitely looking forward to updates with car functions. I think it'll be quite a while if ever to be able to control mission-critical tasks like turning on autopilot or FSD. But maybe sending specific instructions that it confirms with you like park far away and away from other cars.

Opposite-Knee-2798 2025-07-19 16:12

Nobody said it would have that. In fact, it was made abundantly clear that it would not integrate with car functions. Why are you so confused about it?

SirBill01 2025-07-19 16:13

Think of it like an infinite interactive podcast machine where you can learn about anything while driving.

[deleted] 2025-07-19 16:14

I can already do that with Gemini on my phone

virtualnsanity3 2025-07-19 16:15

Right? Those have been shockingly bad as compared to the competition. Feels like the initial Siri - a huge initial advantage that just stagnated. Here’s hoping that can deliver on the promise of in-car controls *and* the other conversational stuff

[deleted] 2025-07-19 16:16

Exactly

SillyMilk7 2025-07-19 16:17

A lady at my work in her 70s, who's been a world traveler since she was in her early 20s tells me how great the free version of chat gpt was as a tour guide and planner in one of her latest travels. It's amazing how some people can become so set in their ways and can't adapt, while others continue to learn and grow.

MattMason1703 2025-07-19 16:19

I just want to able to make the clock larger.

frozenunicorn 2025-07-19 16:26

I only use setting 1 on the wipers and wish for an intermittent setting like every other car since the 50s

JayMo15 2025-07-19 16:31

I bought and still have a 2017 Model S… the voice button has never worked and Tesla has only shrugged. Not that my car would get Grok, but it wouldn’t be able to use it anyway!

ThatRocketSurgeon 2025-07-19 16:33

Kids can be left alone at birth in FL. There are no rules.

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2025-07-19 16:35

I did come up with something. I like music trivia. If Grok could play music snippets and allow me to guess and ask for hints, that would be fun on a road trip. But I don’t know how licensing works with songs.

JayMo15 2025-07-19 16:37

Nice try, AI

Itchy_Platypus4085 2025-07-19 16:39

Like anything this will improve with time. At least we're getting updates.

CaptnUchiha 2025-07-19 16:50

Because you look cool when you hate on AI nowadays. Especially if it’s Grok.

[deleted] 2025-07-19 17:11

As if you can’t extrapolate into the future? Step: 1) Make Grok available 2) Make Grok useful They’ll 100% expose various controls to Grok soon, including routing. It’ll be great when you can ask Grok to stop at Starbucks on the way.

Dap1082 2025-07-19 17:11

Gemini on Android used to be useless, but it's getting better and actually does stuff now. I bet Grok will be the same. It's just a toy AI right now, but eventually, you'll be able to control your car with it. Give it some time.

[deleted] 2025-07-19 17:17

Thank you

[deleted] 2025-07-19 17:18

Clearly

SirBill01 2025-07-19 17:27

Dud just try it! Give me one example of a math equation that AI fails on now. They focused hard on fixing exactly that issue because it made them all look stupid.

Harryhodl 2025-07-19 17:43

All this tech not just in Tesla but all companies just needs a bit more time. We are at the beginning but when it all jumps off it’s gonna be like the jetsons cartoon.

cav754 2025-07-19 18:18

*nobodycares

Informery 2025-07-19 18:19

This is just simply not true of any modern AI, and hasn’t been for a year or two. There are still obviously hallucinations in some fields and queries. But math is a strong point.

Informery 2025-07-19 18:23

Just ask it to “keep summer safe”, and then report back.

aTickleMonster 2025-07-19 18:45

I think it's more than people are realizing AI is just machine learning and it's nowhere near as intelligent as they think it should be.

jb69029 2025-07-19 18:46

I made the mistake of asking in one of the Tesla Facebook forums if we can decline the Grok update. Immediately got called a libtard and insulted about my weight. Apparently not wanting the antisemitic AI on my car was a direct personal insult to a bunch of bootlickers that have made politics their entire personality.

BigSprinkler 2025-07-19 18:48

I mean, it’s cool. But Siri can actually command.

TechDudeInBlue 2025-07-19 19:18

It is useless

jevawin 2025-07-19 19:22

They could put music and map caching in, ending the frustration of internet black spots. Instead they give us news and weather, with a side of fascism.

Stew_Pedaso 2025-07-19 19:33

Your phone already does that, and connected to the Bluetooth is functionally superior since you can use a wake up phrase. You must be part of the (sadly) large part of the population who is happy with anything no matter how useless.

DayRepresentative110 2025-07-19 19:58

Man, i would be just happy to talk with Grok at my car, as i am AI enthusiast, but there no update to be seen... :(

CandyFromABaby91 2025-07-19 20:16

On a road trip. This would be amazing for the kids. They keep taking my phone to talk to ChatGPT already.

ignite1hp 2025-07-19 20:35

I uploaded a bunch of electric bills and asked them to write a report on my kwh usage each month. The data was wrong the majority of the time.

johnnyXcrane 2025-07-19 21:21

then you used the wrong LLM or the wrong prompt. LLMs now just write a python script on the fly that does the calculating and take the numbers from that output.

MaterialInevitable83 2025-07-19 22:38

Really depends. ChatGPT is AWFUL at calculus

green-dragon-24 2025-07-19 23:07

yep, that’s what i looking for while driving - solving differential equations 😎

SomeoneInQld 2025-07-19 23:21

I had chagpt get some maths wrong for me about 2 weeks ago. It was a simple multiplication.

Old_Scene_4259 2025-07-19 23:22

I love grok and use it dozens of times a day. And naturally I'm going to be the last one to receive the update I'm sure.

flybikesbmx 2025-07-20 00:51

Why are you so confused about the comment? They are aware, and they do not like it.

TrickLuhDaKidz 2025-07-20 01:44

I love getting in my car an hour after it rained and the wipers go ballistic for no reason And then while driving in the rain on the highway I have to manually do the windshield because the auto feature hasn't realized it's raining yet Forking stupid

TrickLuhDaKidz 2025-07-20 01:53

All the Tesla "games" are bloatware, too. I want that 💩 gone

dopestar667 2025-07-20 03:20

I’m looking forward to having conversations about world events, the economy, etc, while my car drives itself

fr3d0511 2025-07-20 03:25

My car has an Intel processor so I don’t care lol

LilReef599 2025-07-20 04:39

I disagree, this has huge potential. The camera, gps location, internal systems, etc could be inputs to grok You can have a tour guide explaining the things you see from the car. It can plan an entire trip end to end, no need for an itinerary. It could do reservations, etc. I see lots and lots of possibilities.

LilReef599 2025-07-20 04:40

I disagree, this has huge potential. The camera, gps location, internal systems, etc could be inputs to grok. It can be your personal tour guide explaining the things you see from the car. It can plan an entire trip end to end, no need for an itinerary. It could do reservations, etc. I see lots and lots of possibilities.

keiye 2025-07-20 05:19

How do so many people here have grok now, but it shows only 1.7% of fleet (basically employees)?

avatarname 2025-07-20 09:25

I can see some uses for it, like when I drive and see some monument or building that looks cool if it was connected to car's cameras I could ask it what it is. Maybe we are not there yet but Gemini is rather good if I take a photo of some places ask it what that building is etc. Another use case is... and I believe they are working on Grok for kids, so it can ''look after'' the kids while they are in the car, hopefully providing less brain rot content... Other than that I dunno, if it was more agentic there could be other use cases like writing e-mails of text messages for you or going through Tinder while you are driving and swiping left or right or starting conversations as per your preferences :D

craigl2112 2025-07-20 11:16

Yes, for sure. I can't see Grok not ultimately replacing the internal voice control on the car, though.... With that being said, three years ago when I bought my Model 3 I was sure Messaging would be improved dramatically by now and look at where we are :-)

ATXRSK 2025-07-20 14:29

Can I get it to DM an RPG while I drive? Note: i dont want Hutler as my DM.

[deleted] 2025-07-20 15:00

The good thing about Tesla games is that you can actually uninstall them

[deleted] 2025-07-20 15:03

Those uses for it would totally be fine except that it's not actually integrated into any car systems

TrickLuhDaKidz 2025-07-20 17:11

Seriously? I've never even opened them. I had no clue. Thanks Do they get re-added in future updates?

avatarname 2025-07-20 17:11

yeah I was thinking in future maybe

[deleted] 2025-07-20 17:17

Nope

Additional_Ad4116 2025-07-20 17:32

wow this is classic Tesla. Do you think it will ever be useful?

IcySwine 2025-07-20 18:36

Right now it doesnt feel too exciting. But i have high hopes for the future, it is in beta after all.

Overall_Curve6725 2025-07-20 19:27

What a waste

G67jk 2025-07-20 20:25

I find this post more pointless than the update

PhEw-Nothing 2025-07-20 22:05

Yet you spend money swapping your wheels. What’s the functional purpose of that lol?

wasianjimothy 2025-07-21 01:39

I had ChatGPT calculate the value of a call option this week using the Black-Scholes model and it continuously got the math wrong multiple times

SirBill01 2025-07-21 01:50

Ok, maybe at the boundaries some current AI still fails, but that's way beyond what we were talking about - even so did you try Grok4? I think it may be able to handle that now.

TheHydroborator 2025-07-21 01:52

This had changed. Most if not all use code now when calculating or you can prompt as such.

Pavores 2025-07-21 02:28

Ironically, speed, acceleration, and distance are all differential equations we solve while driving.

green-dragon-24 2025-07-21 02:29

😊

Dragunspecter 2025-07-21 03:42

Bro ChatGPT didn't know how many r's were in strawberry literally a year ago.

amalgamator 2025-07-21 04:00

AMD only? That sucks.

Back-Opposite 2025-07-21 06:54

Typical New Yorker response

thegreatestd 2025-07-21 13:00

I got ripped to shreds for asking about justification if it’s not ready. “What if I want to look up what something means while on a podcast” - so you’re listening to jibberish that’s 10+ lines that doesn’t save in a car. How is that usable? “Well I want to look up a place to eat where I eat, etc” it’s not implemented for that any safer than using your phone, etc. you’d have to search for it on the car + on your phone if you wanted to look further into it.

cloneman88 2025-07-21 16:30

Why not? I’d imagine it would work like normal chat agents. The car could serve its functions as an MCP server at some point and grok could call the functions.

besop12 2025-07-22 02:50

1. Grok interface is on the Tesla screen 2. For IOS Siri is useless. using phone whilst driving is illegal, you can probably get around it with shortcuts but built in solution is 10000% better 3. you truly write like a male karen redditor

CourtBitter8868 2025-07-22 04:09

It’s cool until the ai become sentient and take over your car

Pattont 2025-07-24 07:49

I just want voice input to recognize which number I want to call for a person. EX. “CALL {persons name} mobile”. My 2015 and 2018 bmw could recognize mobile vs work when you told it to call someone yet the most technologically advanced car on the market you have to click the screen when a person has more than one number stored in your phone…. I just don’t understand how that feature has been left out for this long when the car clearly understands complex names and commands. *edit* - I did a search for this and there are Tesla Forum posts where this problem was reported around 2014 as a feature request…… 11 years later it’s still not available…….

[deleted] 2025-07-24 12:40

This is exactly my point (and now experience after having the update on my car.) I used it twice. Once by myself and once with my SO to see if a second perspective could find any redeeming qualities for it. What I have found is that it does not really work well with more than one person in the car since the slightest bit of background conversation will "cut it off" mid sentence and force it to re try its response. The different modes and voices are cool compared to other LLM models but only really offer a laugh or two before never wanting to use them again. Ultimately I stand by what I said. This is pretty pointless and more of just a "show off" update. Similar to light shows it's cool as a feature you can show your friends and get a few laughs/smiles but outside of that im probably just going to stick to my phones LLM since it can actually change music, set a destination, send texts, etc.

Improvement-Fabulous 2025-07-27 23:25

That is some hate! Grok actually is quite fun to chat with on my drives. And quite useful. I mean you have an assistant in your car! Can you imagine tomorrow it will dial into your conference calls....give you directions..take directions..the future is here! And please dont compare Grok to Siri and Google assistant. They are not even close...

[deleted] 2025-07-28 11:28

All the stuff you just described is stuff that Google Gemini can already do.

Improvement-Fabulous 2025-07-28 11:29

In which car?

[deleted] 2025-07-28 11:32

That's the beauty of it, you can literally do that in any car that you have your phone in. Hook it up to Bluetooth audio and you can do it hands free by just saying "hey google"

Improvement-Fabulous 2025-07-28 11:37

Well we know that...i also know Gemini and its history...and I can tell you dont drive a Tesla also.. 😀. Anyways enjoy your Monday.

Robbbbbbbbb 2025-08-01 03:14

It unfortunately isn't great at this. Despite being able to access your location, it won't give precise answers like that. For example, I asked it today where the closest Supercharger was and it told me "about 10 miles away." I was sitting about 20 feet away. So I then asked it where the next closest one was and it said 15 miles away, followed by an equally generic answer.

[deleted] 2025-08-04 02:02

I had a long drive yesterday so I had a chance to use grok in my Tesla for the first time. We got into a conversation on a variety of things from Amelia Earhart to the modernization of telemetry to children's books. Specifically stories I was writing with ChatGPT. I decided to feed grok, the plot lines and the character names and character definitions. Interestingly, I mentioned that I needed supporting characters and I had some in mind. Including a whippet dog which I did not give a name to. However, grok suggested the name Luna. Interestingly, I had never mentioned the name Luna to grok. But, I had used it in chatgpt. I asked grok, how did it came up with the name?. That it seemed too much of a coincidence that I had used that name in other stories, but never in grok. It commented that it was just a happy coincidence. It had come up with the name Luna as a quirky name that seemed to fit the storyline. And it assured me that it had no connection to anything I had done with AI previously. I'm not too sure I bought this explanation. I had also developed a theme song for the characters in Donna AI. I mentioned it to Grok. I sang the first line. It suggested a second verse which eerily was exactly the second verse of what I had developed with Donna. Coincidence I think not.

mvcl 2025-08-10 13:27

Why was Elon accosted?

mvcl 2025-08-10 13:30

that explains a lot actually

cav754 2025-08-10 16:21

Because he saw the price of a car rain sensor was like $50 when buying in bulk and thought that it would be cheaper to use an AI algorithm to have a normal camera double as a rain sensor and pay some software engineers millions of dollars to come up with a worse solution. A terrible decision for the reliability and customer satisfaction, but over millions of cars he saves money so why not from his perspective.

milventures 2025-08-28 20:25

Grok is hilarious! I just tried the voices and the lazy male is just flat out hilarious!
