Bro why not just say it's $12 in the article title
If one buys used from Tesla, presumably they would qualify for this?
Lol
Then there would be no reason to click into the article.
Anyone know if this available for the MX in California? I don’t see any options in my app Edit: never mind, new vehicles only 🙄
Just a PSA, auto insurance will commonly have coverage of some kind for glass. Check your policy coverage before spending more.
You can schedule a free service inspection to qualify for it
My insurance (Amica) charges $122/year for windshield replacement coverage. So, a bit cheaper, but around the same cost as the $12/month Tesla wants. Everyone should check before buying the Tesla coverage, though, because I’m sure it varies widely between areas and carriers. Also worth noting that the fine print says Tesla will try repairing the windshield before replacing it.
Can you imagine, a world in which we didn't have to click through ads? Horrifying.

Where are you getting a Tesla windshield for $550? My model 3 is $1000-$1500
I replaced my Model S windshield on Tuesday. Covered by insurance with a zero deductible.
And in some states it’s required by law to be a free replacement.
i think it’s worth noting that every insurance out there will force you to use aftermarket windshields and not oem. sometimes aftermarket is just as good and sometimes it’s complete trash.
If it’s just for windshield, it’s pointless. I have $0 glass deductible for windshield already with my insurance and it only adds $30 for 6 month coverage. So the Tesla add-on seems more expensive. It should be for the glass roof. I have already spent $1k replacing glass roof panel once and it’s cracked again.
The first replacement every year is $0 deductible, it's only $100 after.
Interesting, Amica is charging me $125 over 6 months. Think this Tesla plan is worth it for me.

Alternate headline: Tesla puts ads in its app
I’m going to do this. Y and X owner.
Yea, exactly what we have here in FL
Prices vary depending on your vehicle type.
Its location based probably, CA/texas is around $1500 for windshield ($700,parts+ labor $800)
Interesting! Thanks
Some, if not many, insurances record windshield repair/replacement as a claim that stays on your record for up to 7 yrs. Happened to me in FL with both Progressive and State Farm.
Not true.
Ads? May I suggest using Brave browser with built-in ad blocker?
That does not include calibration. If you set up an appointment, they'll add the calibration cost after.
In BC, at least, you have the option of choosing non-OEM glass for zero deductible or OEM glass for the deductible. Neither option affects your insurance rates. Oh, and you can purchase additional insurance, optionally, that covers the deductible / difference between OEM and non-OEM for all claim types. Therefore I don't see Tesla rolling this out to BC (or rolling it out but having poor uptake) because the value proposition isn't there.
I paid $1400 at Safelite last year for a windshield. '22 MY.
I called Safelite to get the calibration cost removed since calibration would happen automatically on my way home. They refused; said it wasn’t an option. It’s a ripoff.
I’ve had my windshield replaced on a previous Model Y. Insurance reimbursed me for Tesla to replace it and they obviously used OEM. I think it was around $1500 for the job at the time.
Says additional cost may be required for calibration
They should launch an affordable battery protection plan.
Depends on your state, whether it’s included with your COMP coverage and/or whether your full deductible applies
Not showing in service plans section for me in Texas, '24 MY
Not everyone has that kind of policy. Once I replace my existing windshield that has a huge crack, I'm definitely picking up this offer. I've already replaced once. Now I have to do it again. '22 MY.
I’m surprised this is a thing. My insurance will cover windshield replacements for free.
I had my windshield replaced by Tesla 2 months ago. I have progressive. In Arizona.(state laws differ)Full comprehensive with $0 deductible glass. Progressive glass claim phone number is actually a safelite rep. I specifically asked if they would use OEM glass and they said it’s OEM equivalent. Which is an indirect way of saying no. They have to read a disclosure that mentions you have the choice to use which ever shop you want but not all shops “work with progressive insurance.” It took like 4 different reps but eventually I figured out If they don’t work with progressive you can still use whomever but you have to front the bill then submit receipts and they reimburse in full. Tesla doesn’t work with progressive. I scheduled repair myself on Tesla app and paid out of pocket. Probably like a 3 week lag time but I got a check in the full amount around $1500. No push back or anything. Just sent a before and after pic of damage and sent copy of invoice.
How much is your monthly premium?
Probably not yet. Look at other replies in this thread. There is mention of existing owners needing a pre inspection before being eligible.
I’d much rather have and use a protection plan. Filed a couple $0 deductible glass claims the last few years and it screwed up my insurance rates. Two windshields in 2021 and 2022 respectively, and probably 3-4 glass chip claims the last 7 years. Still feeling the effects of it, Progressive for example wouldn’t even give me coverage for “too many claims”. Also doesn’t help living in a state that has $0 glass deductible under comp yet is very lenient on carrier underwriting (a lot of states don’t let carriers use those claims in their underwriting). As far as I know protection plans and redemption is not recorded under insurance, thus no records to LexisNexis for using it.

Numbers probably aren't looking good and are trying to find more ways to get money out of people.
How do you calibrate a windshield? What is there to even calibrate on a windshield.
But if your insurance covers it it means your paying for it already. And your insurance would likely count it as a claim if you use it. Up to everyone to decide if it's better to spend $180 without any insurance involvement or say like $100/yr through your insurance. I'm sure there is a point that is more expensive than insurances cost where it is worth it. Question is how much more. And obviously if it's cheaper you should go with this and just remove that coverage from your insurance.
But wouldn't a used one from Telsa have gotten that inspection already?
And your rates can be affected by it. Insurance companies don't lose. They can raise your rates or even drop you and make it much harder and more costly to get coverage if they feel you are costing them too much.
it actually is true.
State Farm replaced mine with an OEM windshield for my Model 3, so it's not universally true.
Reddit is that world! The comments ARE the article in this world.
You should check to see if they have it. I didn’t know it either for a long time because it’s not actually advertised when you sign up on the website. Only when you call and talk to a representative, they can add the glass coverage to a specific car on your policy.
I have the same full coverage with glass $0 deductible on glass. $140/m Colorado State Farm
They'll still count it as a claim though.
Good to know! I'll give them a call.
Cameras behind the rear view mirror.
The cameras, but it's confusing. It sounds like the calibration doesn't actually need to be done unless it's really off. Tesla replaced mine twice and both times said there is no calibration, it's gonna calibrate on its own on the drive home.
My Tesla OEM replacement on the S is like $1900. Safelite was charging ~$1100 but they kept getting the wrong glass and eventually we're just gonna order from Tesla and pay the difference.
Man that’s really awesome. Replacing a windshield in the states requires a claim that can increase your premium on renewal. You also gotta pay the deductible if you have one. Most people in the states have a $500 - $1000 deductible.
Some carriers count this as a “claim”
Most insurers have a separate deductible for windshield coverage. I set my standard deductible at $500, and my windshield deductible is zero. In my state they are legally not allowed to count windshield claims against you as a claim that can increase your rates.
In my state they are legally not allowed to count it as a claim that can increase your rates.
I’ve used GEICO and Tesla insurance. Neither one had windshield only coverage.
All carriers file this as a claim. It's money paid out by your policy's coverage, period. Even a glass endorsement results in a claim on your record. All claims remain on your CLUE report for up to 7 years. Some carriers only rate on 5, but carriers like Progressive look back up to 7 years. Source: I'm a licensed independent insurance broker.
Windshield on my 2018 3 is thick and never had any problems. Not sure what changed, and not sure if true but SA told me prior to covid replacement batches they’ve been getting are thinner and flimsy when we were just having a side convo about it when my 2018 was in service
It may not impact rates in all states, but it does effect eligibility. A carrier like Progressive will deny a new quote for applications with 2 glass losses in 3 years. Source: I'm a licensed independent broker.
Progressive paid out on my OEM Tesla windshield, twice.
🤷♂️ I guess I'll never do business with them.
Its made out of people!
A grand total of 3 states
Does anyone yet know if it just cover the windshield or also roof glass as well?
I double-checked just to make sure: I'm paying $61 every six months with Amica. So, basically half what they're charging you (sorry). It must be a regional thing. All the more reason for everyone to check with their auto insurance company before signing up for this windshield coverage. Could be a great deal, or a huge rip off (not Tesla's fault). It all depends on your region and your insurance carrier.
OP is a content farmer
You should state you work for these websites given you spam the same article across multiple subs all within minutes. Seems like blatant self promotion
ya, i bet it did. 🙄
Definitely does. I live in Arizona where rocks are everywhere. I went through a streak of bad luck where I had at least one windshield replacement a year at about $1300 per incident for about 4 years in a row. My comprehensive rates were through the roof. $0 deductible glass coverage was around $300 per month extra on my policy. Some companies wouldn't even quote me a policy based on my claims history (the glass claims were the only claims I had). Fortunately things have returned to normal now, but people really need to stop saying it doesn't affect your rates. It does.
I’m thinking about getting a Tesla Model 3 (new). So excited about the technology! Are they notorious for windshield damage from Flying rocks and debris?
Separate deductible, not separate coverage. I’ve had no deductible glass coverage with Geico
What states? Edit: looked it up In these three states, insurers are legally required to waive your deductible for glass damage (repairs and replacements) under comprehensive coverage: • Florida • Kentucky • South Carolina Here, insurers may offer zero-deductible glass coverage, but it’s not mandated: • Arizona • Massachusetts States Allowing Glass Coverage Add-Ons In these states, you can buy optional full glass policies that waive deductibles when used: • Connecticut • Minnesota • New York In California and Oklahoma, insurers cannot raise your premium for a not-at-fault windshield claim
This IS true. However anything your insurance company pays for is a claim. That is important to note.
They have a list of activities that are not covered. How would they know if you did any of these things? What is not covered by the Windshield Protection plan? The Windshield Protection plan does not cover damage to your vehicle’s front windshield caused by: - Tint, stickers, decals or the replacement of such items - Events occurring prior to effective date of subscription - Vandalism - Cosmetic damages - Collision - Commercial use, including carriage of passengers for hire - Racing or off-road driving - Force majeure events, including but not limited to earthquakes, fire, hurricanes, flood or lightning - Negligence, misuse, abuse or towing For more details on exclusions, review the Terms and Conditions of your Windshield Protection plan.
because it's not for all cars
No, they just don't allow people with broken windshields to qualify. You can't just buy it for a month every time you need it.
Sounds like a fucked up place I wouldn't want to be.
> Horrifying Yes, because the ad-funded free stuff we get will now come with a real price tag.
If it helps answer your question I just took delivery on a used model 3 last week and I am able to sign up for this without inspection.
It’s just the front windshield
Genuine question. My glass broke, paid no upfront costs, but my premium went up. I assume until they recoup their money back. My question: what's the point of insurance if we end up paying for the windshield anyway through premium? Isn't insurance supposed to help us when in need? Or is insurance now just a scam that takes money monthly?
I just bought a 2026 Juniper but I don’t have the option to add the windshield protection. Updated app a was able to add extended warranty but not the glass one. Anyone else have the same issues?
> Edit: never mind, new vehicles only 🙄 That's incorrect.
Your car is still new wait until after 30 days and ask for a inspection.
Yep I see that now in the article, I originally missed it
I bought my new Juniper 12 days ago. I purchased the windshield plan today in the app.
Or just add https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin-lite/ddkjiahejlhfcafbddmgiahcphecmpfh to Chrome if that's what you're comfortable using.
It's not true for Tesla and many European brands in the US because nobody actually makes aftermarket windshields for them yet. Safelite just installs an OEM windshield for you. The windshields for the Cybertruck and the Rivian EDV are so large and heavy that essentially only the dealers can install them, because they need specialized equipment.
Not any more than any other car, but the roof panels are also glass, so there's more linear feet of edges for a rock to hit where a crack will start more easily.
No-deductible glass (aka "full glass") coverage is only a mandatory thing in Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina. Several other states require insurers to offer it as an *option* (AZ, NY, MA, CT, MN..) and of course insurers can offer it even where not required to do so, if they want. In most parts of the US it's just a regular comprehensive claim with the applicable deductible.
Not exactly true in all cases or in all states. In AZ (a state where carriers aren’t legally allowed to count glass as a claim), I went through 3 windshields in the space of a year and was still able to switch (from GEICO to Progressive). For clarity: went from GEICO to progressive as my new homeowners was cheaper with progressive so I bundled.
Yeah but now look at your claims history. If you wanted to switch insurance, you have to check the box that a claim has happened in the last five years, thus raising the premiums offered to you..
It’s for two main things, property damage that you may cause to someone else, and collision coverage to protect against a total loss of your vehicle. Anything besides those two things is not worth going thru insurance for the reasons you mentioned. It’s mostly a scam, and in my state (florida) your license gets suspended if you don’t carry insurance
