@Tesla: @LucasDeakins Incorrect – Teslas, like most electric vehicles, produce significantly less brake dust than gas cars (thanks to regenerative braking / using the motor(s) to s

I'm at 290,000km, and I am still on the original brake pads and rotors for my model 3. I would have burned through almost 6 sets of pads on my old gas truck.

These automated posts are getting pretty annoying

mlty 2025-04-16 11:04

What work needed to be done on your car so far? Which year is it?

w4laf 2025-04-16 11:07

"there battery's" is an indicator of this person's intelligence level.

sagenbn 2025-04-16 11:12

We (Norwegian/cold and wet climate) struggling with the opposite, we are not using breaks enough it gets rusty after 2 years. We even have "use your breake thursday" to use your breaks so it won't rust too fast.

crujones43 2025-04-16 11:18

2019 sr+. I have replaced the horn, the 12 v battery, and the upper control arms. That was pretty much it until just recently when the thermal management system and cabin heater went costing me a painful $2600.00. They said my upper control arms are on the way out again. It is a known problem and they only charge parts, no labor to switch them out. I think they said $125 each. All in all, it is the best car I've ever owned by a long shot. I figured that now I have saved more in gas than what I bought the car for.

Funkytadualexhaust 2025-04-16 11:56

Salt your roads i bet

jrherita 2025-04-16 12:12

Just curious - has anyone needed to get their calipers re-lubricated from lack of use?

jrherita 2025-04-16 12:14

Wow the thermal management system sounds like a pain in the butt to deal with. My 2018 (LR AWD+) blew the main pyrofuse when the rear motor went (covered under warranty), and I've had a few small things like the 12V battery, and the charging flap go lazy. My modem also went bad, which was annoying for a few months since it would go in and out of working status (Paid by me). But same feeling/experience -- best car by a long shot.

psaux_grep 2025-04-16 12:36

Salty indeed.

stevew14 2025-04-16 14:50

How long have you had your car and have you changed your brakes?

I have S since 2017, changes about every 2 years. 2023 Y have not changed yet.

There are like 2 posts a day on this sub. Too many?

mistsoalar 2025-04-16 15:48

Isn’t it one of the textbook examples of “Tell me you don’t understand EV without telling me"

akosikalantiaw 2025-04-16 16:32

How's your HV battery?

crujones43 2025-04-16 17:27

The range has definitely dropped. I'm sure it would be better if I didn't drive like a cat who just noticed it's tail is on fire. Highway speeds I'm now lucky to get 200km out of it, but that covers 99% of my daily driving now, and I live in the toronto area, which is very well serviced by superchargers.

Naturebrah 2025-04-16 17:57

If they’re junk yeah

cadnights 2025-04-16 23:27

I almost wish we could turn off regen completely for this purpose

[deleted] 2025-04-17 00:35

You can in service mode. It allows you to “burnish” the rotors.

casino_r0yale 2025-04-17 02:39

How do you know it’s time to swap the control arms?

crujones43 2025-04-17 02:56

They start to creak. There is no danger, just noise.

Present-Ad-9598 2025-04-17 03:13

Currently at 104k miles on stock brake pads, 2018 M3, I touch the brake pedal maybe three times a week not including parking

unpluggedcord 2025-04-17 05:31

Jokes on me, ive blocked enough that now the subreddit its dead

[deleted] 2025-04-17 17:16

I have a 2018 awd m3. It's now at 75k miles and has been an absolute dream. I noticed the brakes beginning to squeak and so I set up a service appointment. They recommended brake fluid, a/c desiccation (?), cabin air filter, wiper blades, tire rotation, brake pads and rotor servicing, brake cleaning and lubricant. Totals around $1,000. I am okay with this as I haven't had to do anything other than rotate my tires and add wiper fluid (meanwhile my wife's ICE vehicle service kills me every routine maintenance). I was just curious if that seemed right to you as this is my first time really having anything done. Like I said, I just reached out because of the squeaks at 75k. Thanks.

BritainRitten 2025-04-17 17:18

Brake dust may be less, but wouldn't tire dust be much higher due to increased weight?

htrajan 2025-04-17 17:39

username checks out

dtpearson 2025-04-17 21:12

Just from my personal experience, my tyres seem to last the same as my old ICE vehicles. I am certain that more weight = more dust, but most WELL DESIGNED EVs are equal to or only slightly heavier than their equivalent ICE counterparts (sometimes lighter). So its a moot point.

robidog 2025-04-17 21:31

I’ve read a few dozens of the tweets in that thread. Had to stop, it just hurts the brain too much.

mcprogrammer 2025-04-17 22:45

Setting it to low should be more than enough I would think. You would still need to use the brakes, just not quite as hard.

cadnights 2025-04-17 22:47

With the older models you can't change the strength sadly

Money_Wall_8705 2025-04-19 08:35

The same in Germany. Here the media have been running a major campaign against Tesla for several months because the vehicles have to undergo their first technical inspection after three years and then Fail for rusty breaks.

grmelacz 2025-04-19 20:12

I think setting the power to Chill makes the regen a bit weaker. But it might be just a different power curve used.

KuZagan 2025-04-21 00:29

Try doing a brake burnishing periodically. Can't remember the process to initiate it but it's in Service Mode, walks you through it. My techs when I worked for Tesla had to do them pretty frequently; Florida has a lot of humidity lol

KuZagan 2025-04-21 00:33

As a former Service Advisor for Tesla this sounds pretty consistent and accurate. Only thing I'd question would be the pads and rotors. We almost never did pads and rotors except on older Model S vehicles (different motor type with lower Regen, they actually used more brake pressure to compensate). We did a ton of a service called a brake burnishing though, where the car goes through a specific cycle of accel and decel with Regen almost off to make sure the brakes get nice and hot

[deleted] 2025-04-21 02:23

Thank you for the reply! I live in a really dry climate, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The car has been incredible for 7 years, so it seems pretty reasonable that it may need a few things.

productive_monkey 2025-04-22 02:30

Yes. There are studies showing increased PM10 coming off the tires. Unfortunately, modern tires are made of 100's of synthetic materials, chemicals, and heavy metals these days.

productive_monkey 2025-04-22 02:38

>most WELL DESIGNED EVs are equal to or only slightly heavier than their equivalent ICE counterparts  Do you have an example? Wasn't able to find anything to support that. I copy pasted your comment to ChatGPT and it said this was an inaccurate statement. And then asked it to come up with a chart of comparably sized vehicles including both ICE and EV's. EV's seem heavier by 500 - 2000 lbs.
