The crowd at r/worldnews is making this out to be a massive blow to Tesla, but I thought they didn't spend money on auto shows. Is that still the case?

thelowkeyman 2025-03-19 13:08

It’s really not a big deal at all, a lot of the automakers aren’t even going to the auto shows anymore. I went to the one in Chicago and it was the worst I’ve seen it in a long time

Austinswill 2025-03-19 13:11

It is so fun watching so many grown people act like complete children.

almosttan 2025-03-19 13:12

Nakatomi2010 2025-03-19 13:26

My interpretation of auto shows has always been more about getting people who own dealerships to get a look at cars that they might want to get on their sales lots, and Tesla doesn't really conform to that, it's basically just a pop up store for them, since they can do sales on the spot. Frankly, an article about Tesla *not* being at the show is more likely to get them better publicity than if they were attending the show. Yeah, the reasoning is steep in *understandable* politics and such, but not broadcasting stuff like this tends to do better at hitting back on something than broadcasting it does. It's a bit like having a bad Uber ride and then writing an article about it. People are going to be curious about whether or not the Uber ride was *that* bad, resulting in more people riding in Ubers, and more articles being written about it. I see this as a non-issue.

GuyRayne 2025-03-19 13:27

When you are the best, hate is what you get. No alpha lion or gorilla or elephant seal attacks the smaller, weaker inferior members of their society. If you stop listening to the narrator, you will see that only the small and the weak attack the alpha. This is true across the natural world. If you look with your eyes, instead of what someone else is telling you—It goes with the territory.

It's almost like actions have consequences. When your management is so intertwined with the perception of the brand, their actions can have serious repercussions.

Nulight 2025-03-19 14:08

I'm pretty sure that sub is fueled by bots also including fake upvotes and awards to appeal to the masses

bjb8 2025-03-19 14:15

They were at the Toronto show last month, so they do go to car shows. But they don't spend big money on displays or shiny things, it is basically the cars and a few employees answering questions. And there was no sign of protest, the cars were always full of people checking them out and the test drive line for the cybertruck was always long the day I was there (mid week). And yes some other manufacturers were not there like Honda, VW and Mazda. I was curious to see the VW ID. Buzz so that was disappointing.

Mateking 2025-03-19 14:18

You can try to downplay this if you'd like but they attended with a pretty big stall last year. So "thy didn't spend money on Auto shows" is already incorrect. No they were kicked off and yes that's a pretty big deal. Shit like this doesn't happen.

Mateking 2025-03-19 14:18

Yes they decide to not go. They don't get kicked out.

Deceptiveideas 2025-03-19 14:23

I live near one of the busiest malls in all of America and Tesla displays were all removed. The Tesla show cases were located in the center so they likely paid big bucks to display their cars including the cyber truck.

MobileVortex 2025-03-19 14:25

I can't believe you typed this out for the public to see lol.

WhenKittensATK 2025-03-19 14:28

If you’re looking into an EV you’re going to discover Tesla pretty quickly. They don’t need marketing.

slykethephoxenix 2025-03-19 14:29

It is. Pics and AdviceAnimals is too.

_casshern_ 2025-03-19 14:31

They had a fairly large area at the Toronto auto show.

Radium 2025-03-19 14:33

Vancouver auto show is ran by the auto dealership association. They’d be the first to block direct sales Tesla for “safety”

The truth hurts. That’s why everyone is loving a lie. Anyone who doesn’t know this, is just doing what they are told. In real life, the little weak bulls (which is where the term “bullies” came from) are the ones attacking and killing anything. If you’re an OG gang banger, you get shot by a group of tiny 13 year olds.

frosticus0321 2025-03-19 15:02

Hyundai/kia didn't attend last yr. If you wanted to see EVs it was tesla, rivian, polestar and a locked up rally mache e. Slim pickings for such an EV rich city.

DrPeppehr 2025-03-19 15:03

People dont buy tesla cus they want an ev they buy cuz its a good car. I never cared whatsoever for climate or ev. Just wanted the best car under $30k, faster than most expensive $100k cars and cheaper than a Camry

woalk 2025-03-19 15:03

But that’s only feasible for those that are in the area of that auto show. 99% of people around the world won’t be anywhere near it.

WhenKittensATK 2025-03-19 15:14

Not sure why you’re trying to downplay whether a car is an EV or ICE is not a factor in car buying. Some people may not have the ability to self charge at home. They may not be in an area with a good charging infrastructure. They may put a lot of miles per day and don’t want to be inconvenienced by waiting for the car to charge.

garbear2016 2025-03-19 15:26

Responsible-Income30 2025-03-19 15:26

rotaryfurball 2025-03-19 16:42

Vancouver Canada has so many Teslas that I doubt this will have any substantial quantifiable impact on the sales of Tesla.

ctzn4 2025-03-19 16:47

Gotta be a North America thing. We gotta let them in, even at maybe some ridiculous 50-100% tariff, because at this rate the NA market automakers aren't really competing in the EV space. Only Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid are actually meaningfully innovating.

Yellowpower100 2025-03-19 16:50

It is never free market haha. Ps. Low key polestar is Chinese EV with EU appearance.

kryptonyk 2025-03-19 16:56

I was just in Mexico and saw a BYD dealership. So at least not all of North America is closed to them.

[deleted] 2025-03-19 17:04

When in that area of Canada (between Kelowna and Vancouver) I see more Tesla vehicles than any other vehicle by a LOT. More than F150's or anything else. I don't think the VAS is relevant these days.

frosticus0321 2025-03-19 17:10

They have a 100% tariff now, but none of them were here before that either. It isn't as simple as shipping the cars here they'd have to support repairs/service somehow.

Trainereddes 2025-03-19 17:19

I'd sell my '20 Model 3 AWD in a heartbeat for a SU7 Ultra if it were allowed into Canada and had customer support.

BadManParade 2025-03-19 17:20

They can already come at a 27.5% tariff they choose not to. Volvo sells EVs that are made in China stateside.

ctzn4 2025-03-19 17:23

Oh yeah, forgot about the EX30. I guess with that tariff in mind it makes little economic sense for emerging/new Chinese automakers to try to break into the US market at the moment. It probably eats into the margin so much that they can't price it competitively without losing money, and making them in the US may not be possible/cost effective right now.

neale87 2025-03-19 17:46

Haven't you seen 2nd hand prices? They're dropping too. Frankly I'd sell my LR in a heartbeat if I could afford to take the hit, but I bought it with a view to 10 years so just 7ish more to go. Even when I bought it I was starting to look seriously for alternatives. If I'd held out (had a Model 3) and bought say an Volvo EX30, I'd have lost an extra 10k on the Model 3, so I count myself lucky.

BadManParade 2025-03-19 17:47

BYDs are kinda shit tbh people say they’re gonna take over the American market and push Tesla out etc but I highly doubt it given the fact Tesla is a pretty sizable share of the EV market IN CHINA

Kidchico 2025-03-19 17:47

Attitude reflects leadership.

neale87 2025-03-19 17:48

The sad part is that people seem to think that "political reasons" are not valid, which is how we end up with people so ignorant about the claims of politicians (or should I say the claims of oligarchs now) vs the reality.

WeebBois 2025-03-19 18:25

Average Reddit moment. It was even worse on the r/interestingasfuck post about the Tesla fires.

byyie 2025-03-19 18:27

It’s for the safety reasons. Too many left lunatic terrorists in Vancouver.

JerryLeeDog 2025-03-19 18:46

Turns out when you give in to terrorists, people don't like that When terrorism starts to win, that is a huge problem

JerryLeeDog 2025-03-19 18:51

When you give in to organized terrorists that coordinate attacks on innocent people, it's not going to go over well All their socials were basically shut down because thousands of those innocent people made themselves heard. Good for them, bad for the cowards. Cowards who cave in to violent intimidation never win

FreshNoobAcc 2025-03-19 19:33

Extremely biased sub that permabans extremely quickly and broadly in order to form a one sided narrative

Substantial_Mail_781 2025-03-19 19:48

God forbid Canadians don’t like the car company that financed the guy who is now continually threatening Canadian sovereignty. Canada should remove the tariffs on Chinese cars that artificially stop competition. No point aligning with American protectionism.

WhenKittensATK 2025-03-19 20:05

Separate the car company brand from the hypeman’s ego. Tesla brand has been word of mouth marketing. They don’t need to do the marketing themselves.

AuclairAuclair 2025-03-19 20:12

There are other EVs. Tesla is a tainted brand

JerryLeeDog 2025-03-19 20:20

Model Y is the #2 selling car in China, soon to be the #1. So... that idea would basically fucking do nothing. But why would I expect someone a Tesla page to actually understand int'l Tesla sales??

Trantorianus 2025-03-19 20:20

Well done, Canadians!

Trantorianus 2025-03-19 20:25

What happens when oligarchs win, you can see in RuSSia.

[deleted] 2025-03-19 20:27

I love auto shows 25 years ago when they actually did concept cars. I haven’t been to one in years because I don’t see the point anymore.

VideoGameJumanji 2025-03-19 20:33

Repair centers would exist if they were sold here, it’s not the limiting factor. The limiting factor is the tariffs price out the cars from almost all consumers

frosticus0321 2025-03-19 20:36

Up until 6ish months ago the tariff on Chinese vehicles in Canada was 10% (i think). We frequently received Chinese teslas prior. If Chinese companies wanted to sell here it wasn't the tariff stopping them (it is now).

VideoGameJumanji 2025-03-19 20:39

Year 2000 concept cars? Lmao ok, I went to the Vancouver auto shows with my dad from 2005-2008ish and they were awesome, tons of cars from every single automaker and tons of free shit. Post financial crisis and the auto shows dramatically reduced in scope.

flyryan 2025-03-19 20:44

That exact reason is why they aren't in the US and Canada, unfortunately.

[deleted] 2025-03-19 20:44

Good point. Most people on Reddit are 13 years old.

GuyRayne 2025-03-19 21:03

Sadly, “alpha” means the opposite of what you believe, using my definition. Using my definition, the violent aggressor is NEVER alpha. If you simply observe—and resist cutting and pasting someone else’s beliefs into your mind—it’s obvious that this is true.

Dexeh 2025-03-19 21:16

I literally sat in an IONIQ 5 N at the show last year. I don’t recall the full scope from the brands, but that car was certainly there.

frosticus0321 2025-03-19 21:45

Hyundai def wasn't there on the floor. Maybe they had one in the little test drive area?

ryfitz47 2025-03-19 21:46

Y0ungPup 2025-03-20 00:23

You guys HAVE to stop using “virtue signaling” whenever anyone does or says something you don’t like. People actually believe things, and might do wrong in pursuit of such beliefs. You can disagree and say what they’re doing is wrong, but to drill “they’re virtue signaling! They don’t actually believe the things they say!!” into your brain, is like, wild mental manipulation. I see it every time anyone does ANYTHING. Pronouns in bio? VIRTUE SIGNALING! Accept that people behave and believe differently than you.

Y0ungPup 2025-03-20 00:24

Isn’t BYD expected to beat them?

Alert_Contribution63 2025-03-20 00:31

Throwaway1604778236 2025-03-20 01:14

Pretty sure it’s the combination of not meeting N/A safety standards n Tesla heavily lobbying the governments to not allow Chinese (branded) EVs in. Tesla knows Chinese EVs have better pricing n better performance, just not safety. Ppl will flock to buying Chinese EV instead of Teslas.

People love to be part of the hate club and to win internet points, without believing anything they’re saying or doing any research themselves. Definition of circle jerking and virtue signalling.

[deleted] 2025-03-20 01:39

I do my own research, and come to my own conclusions. I don’t just bandwagon hate to get internet points or to please people IRL. This is virtue signalling.

Y0ungPup 2025-03-20 01:45

There you go virtue signaling again. (You see the issue with just accusing random people of being inauthentic? You know how many people I see parrot your exact talking points? Lol... [Joe Biden Takes Hybrid Jeep For a Joyride at White House](https://people.com/politics/joe-biden-takes-hybrid-jeep-for-a-joyride-at-white-house-not-a-bad-day-on-the-job/) but even if you want to dismiss that one..... In 2011, President Obama held a press event on 'advanced vehicle technologies" where GM showed off the Volt for a second time at the white house, Ford showed off an electric version of the Ford Focus. Less than a year earlier, Obama hosted a press event on the recovery of the American automotive industry after they got wrecked during the global financial crisis. Ford showcased the electric transit van, and GM showed the volt for the first time In 2007, Bush Jr held a press event for GM and Ford where they showed off alternative energy vehicles. Ford showed a plug-in hybrid with a hydrogen fuel cell, GM showed off a hydrogen fuel cell SUV In 92, Ford took a new 92 Taurus SHO to the white house on a press event to "celebrate American manufacturing." In 85, Chrystler gave Reagan a LeBaron GT and delivered it to him at the White Hous—a ceremonial event. Reagan then gave a speech about how awesome Chrysler was and how they recovered from the government bailout they receivedn in 79. In 1979, Carter held a press event to discuss EV investments, at which GM showed off an electric prototype of a Chevette which was a lolololol ev car in and of itself with unprecedented 50 miles range going no more than 30 mph with a tail wind, and topped out at a speedy 53 miles an hour which at the time could have kept up with traffic on the freeway for about 15 miles.... In 1961, Ford gave Jackie Kennedy a Ford Falcon at a white house press event, only to have the car packed up and shipped to the Hyannis Port estate. There are a lot more examples if we really wanted to get into it.

Mustangfast85 2025-03-20 02:46

Also from what I understand they aren’t designed for North American safety specs. Adding the missing things would not make them considerably cheaper than any other EV and as I understand in Europe they’re similarly priced in many cases

QuestGiver 2025-03-20 04:13

Idk I'm a really detail oriented person and like to do my research and Tesla was far and away the best option for an EV in the US. Now that I've owned it for about a year even with all the protests and politics as a straight up vehicle I couldn't imagine having another EV unless it was a straight commute and charge at home vehicle. Superchargers and supercharging planning, frequent updates and a smooth interface, really cheap premium connectivity and most importantly FSD with a really nice "free" auto steer option. Last of all it's honestly a really affordable car but I got mine with a 0% apr promo. Idk I'm clearly biased but I don't see how someone gives up on all that from a purely practical perspective. Certainly can understand politics playing a role though.

AutoBidShip 2025-03-20 04:32

They should have allowed them to attend just to waste their money and make them a laughing stock with nobody showing up at their displaying booth.

Dr_Pippin 2025-03-20 13:12

My wife and I each have a Model 3, and environmental concerns aren't in the top 5 reasons of why we bought the first one, let alone the second one.

[deleted] 2025-03-20 13:35

Im sorry, but you believe doing research and actually studying both sides, facts vs fiction, and coming to your own conclusion based on that is the equivalent of hearing what your friends, family, and Reddit is saying and believe + go along with it? It’s called using your brain. There’s more fact than guess work to most things if you dig deep enough and have above 30 IQ

Yellowpower100 2025-03-20 14:56

Are you sure? I feel it is more due to countries put super high tariffs to avoid fair competitions

JerryLeeDog 2025-03-20 15:26

I invest in both. BYD will beat a LOT of companies but not Tesla. no chance really. BYD makes its money from hybrids still, not BEVs. They will probably start to make a profit from BEVs this year. And even then, Tesla makes 5x more profit per unit as of now. BYD is positioned to destroy EOMs like Ford, GM, Stellantis... Tesla and BYD are going to chew through market share like a 2 company wrecking team.

independent-dog142 2025-03-20 15:42

What about the BMW and Audi? Were they there?

megacewl 2025-03-20 17:11

Hold that L

mobonandez 2025-03-20 18:44

As pathetic as that stock price, yea? Reddit isn't the entire world, it's a small piece of how the entirety of the world feels about Tesla. Go whine elsewhere is that makes you sad.

PotatoesAndChill 2025-03-20 18:53

You're delusional if you think Reddit represents the world. If it did, then Harris would have won the election with 500 electoral votes. And now you got a Reddit front page making it look like the world turned against Teslas, meanwhile in real life guys are leaving their Cybertrucks in the middle of leftist city centres and getting nothing but positive responses from passers by. Anyhow, the stock never dropped below its July 2024 price and is on its way back up again. I suggest you get off reddit and see what's actually happening outside every now and then.

Very strange case of Tesla Derangement Syndrome. Hopefully a real auto show is created free from politics and adult children

LOL what is the fun in that?

Honestly I don’t recall exactly where it was on the show floor, but it was certainly a cool car in my opinion.

Yellowpower100 2025-03-20 21:09

Maybe they should go out of business

dtpearson 2025-03-20 23:39

Because that has not lead to millions of deaths in the past....... But yes let's worry about a few idiots vandalising cars. That's the REAL problem.

ryfitz47 2025-03-21 00:07

no idea what you're on about. it's the leader of one country saying "it'd be easier if you were just part of our country" to its neighbor.

Hoobleton 2025-03-21 00:13

As long ago as 2016 I can tell you they spent a lot of money exhibiting at Goodwood.

GreyGreenBrownOakova 2025-03-21 06:51

The Goodwood Festival of Speed held in  West Sussex ? I'm interested in what happened in Vancouver, 2024. What's "a lot of money" anyway?

[deleted] 2025-03-21 16:29

>“The Vancouver International Auto Show has removed Tesla as a participant in this week’s event, after the automaker was provided multiple opportunities to voluntarily withdraw,” said Eric Nicholl, the show’s executive director, in a statement.

Substantial_Mail_781 2025-03-22 00:43

BYD will get Tesla eventually. Tesla's battery and drivetrain tech has stagnated since 2020, while BYD has improved by leaps and bounds. In the time Tesla took to refresh the Model 3, and Y and deliver the Cybertruck, BYD has released 12 new models.

GreyGreenBrownOakova 2025-03-22 04:00

I read the article, but it doesn't say anything about last year, nor if they paid for a small booth, a large stand, were showing a unique vehicle at no charge, or if it was third parties (eg aftermarket suppliers or supporter clubs) participating. I'd like to hear from someone who actually attended these events in recent years.

Mnawab 2025-03-22 06:40

A lot of people are inauthentic. People who are screaming doom about the company don’t even know that Elon isn’t the chairman of Tesla. How am I suppose to listen to people who just like to scream hate all day.

Endotracheal 2025-03-22 12:10

Let’s punish the one guy who has probably done more single-handedly to lower the carbon footprint of the transportation sector than ANY man alive. Yeah… that’s the person we should go after. So much for Climate Change being an existential crisis. One step forward, two steps back.

Michael-Brady-99 2025-03-23 17:33

Wait, so Canada has 100% tariff on Chinese cars but when USA says they will put tariffs on Chinese cars people lose their minds?

frosticus0321 2025-03-23 17:34

We put them on same time as you guys as a united front.

WilJr21 2025-03-23 19:49

I had to unfollow all the r/ “politically neutral interest or topic but somehow all that’s posted is political content that barely has anything to do with the original purpose of the subreddit” subreddits a while back. People get to be unhinged and then gaslight you for wanting to see Cats on Pizza boxes on the “Cats on Pizza boxes” sub.

Billionaire doesn't want competition for his janky cars.

Bells_Theorem 2025-03-24 05:33

It's part of the "illegal boycott" as Musk likes to call it.

fragileblink 2025-03-24 12:18

Virtue signalling doesn't mean "they don't believe the things they say". It means that people profess their beliefs publicly to demonstrate they are on the moral side of the issue to get approval from others, with no need for that statement to be made, often without an accompanying action that would put themselves at any risk for those beliefs.

aptwo 2025-03-24 20:24

Are you the one going around wanted 100% tax on the rich?

Thanksnomore 2025-03-25 03:39

Pretty sure the concept of terrorism applies against people, not a company

Quin1617 2025-03-25 20:14

I say this applies to real life but not social media. People on the internet generally follow whatever the current trend is, whether they believe/like it or not. Of course there’s plenty that *are* being honest, but imo the majority aren’t. And even if they are, posts, videos, comments, etc will never represent a sizable portion of the population. Which is why it’s better to just ignore it. What others may or not believe isn’t my problem, I’m living my life regardless.

Quin1617 2025-03-25 20:22

It’s kind of the same for me. I love EVs but that isn’t what drew me to Tesla, their tech and safety features did. If everything feature wise about the Model 3 was the same, but it was an ICE or hybrid, I’d still buy one without a second thought.

Quin1617 2025-03-25 20:51

Owners of Teslas are people, albeit I think the threat is way lower than some are making it out to be.

Thanksnomore 2025-03-25 21:27

Well, so far it's the stores that are getting hit hard. Tesla's drivers have had their cars keyed and coal-rolled for years now, without anyone calling that terrorism.

[deleted] 2025-03-25 21:49

Fair, hey at least you are not emitting CO2. It would be kinda hard to get this kinda tech in a combustion car.

Substantial_Mail_781 2025-04-08 18:07

Porsche was there, so we got to see actual cars. Nobody wants to see an iPad on wheels made by tech bros who have no idea how to tune a chassis.
