It's almost like Tesla has a major refresh of one of their car models that is just around the corner and people are holding off on buying a Tesla so they can get the brand new model.

SnootyGoose 2025-02-07 16:39

Or you know, maybe some people are not thrilled with his little stunt on stage. I personally feel he should leave Tesla and let somebody who has more time, take over and really focus on delivering the best cars they can. Who knows, maybe we would get an actual rain sensor instead of relying on a camera.

omnibossk 2025-02-07 16:42

In Norway sales ov BEVs have increased to 96% of all new cars for January. I think it’s more about Y still not available in all trims. And also the bad media attention

[deleted] 2025-02-07 16:43

[removed]

ThaiTum 2025-02-07 16:49

It’s probably a combination. We will find out after the refresh becomes available if sales don’t pick up. Working with a lot of Europeans, I find them more aware and sensitive to social signaling than Americans.

yhsong1116 2025-02-07 16:52

Byd is also down lol

ReticlyPoetic 2025-02-07 16:58

Brand damage or people want the new Y?

KnowledgeSafe3160 2025-02-07 16:58

Or even radar back instead of relying on camera to save a few bucks. So dumb. Going backwards…

StartledPelican 2025-02-07 16:59

If you are referring to Inauguration Day, then that happened 2/3 of the way through the month. I'm doubtful the data supports the hypothesis that sales were doing great until Jan 21st and then dropped off a cliff.

Berlin factory only produces model y, with low inventory from Q4 and re-tooling for new model y, not surprised. Less model y to sell, and ppl are waiting for the new model y. But could also be a mixture of that and less ppl are buying tesla. Best way to tell is look at only model 3 sales.

SnootyGoose 2025-02-07 17:05

💯

goldenhornet 2025-02-07 17:17

Both.

Ok_Cry7572 2025-02-07 17:18

Q1 is always slowest plus this isn't just due to 1 factor. Many factors like inventory and other stuff

Euro_Snob 2025-02-07 17:20

>And also the bad media attention That makes it sound a lot less self-inflicted than it really is. People make excuses but I believe the true sales impact is yet to be seen in full.

TheBlackCat-007 2025-02-07 17:20

Pretty sure Canada sales will do the same if not worse with the disappearing EV credits, the price hike and the bad publicity.

MrFro9 2025-02-07 17:22

ITS JANUARY FFS. The softest month of the year. We’ve heard this same stupid news story every year for the last 10 years. Seriously, some people need to learn critical thinking.

Present-Ad-9598 2025-02-07 17:24

Oh no! Anyways…

Present-Ad-9598 2025-02-07 17:25

It’s January, always a bad month for automakers, nothing to do with “brand damage” lol

nugitsdi 2025-02-07 17:30

It's fallen back (big) compared to jan '24, while general EV market has grown.

GrogRhodes 2025-02-07 17:34

Tesla new car sales are gonna definitely be taking a hit. Used offerings are starting to get pretty cost effective.

torb 2025-02-07 17:42

Norway saw a 40% drop since last year. Tesla has been top in Norway for Years, now it's third.

dacreativeguy 2025-02-07 18:48

It must be hard to sell cars when you aren’t making any. All 4 factories are retooling for the new model y. Move along.

DanielBDK 2025-02-07 19:00

I dont care, I love my Tesla and will buy another one 🤩

Commercial-Sorbet309 2025-02-07 19:12

I would be very shocked if they didn’t slump in the US and Canada. He alienated majority of his target market.

kael13 2025-02-07 19:15

It’s gone from bemusement to mild shame in my locality. But a relative just ordered a model 3 so I guess for some it’s not a deal breaker.

This doesn’t counter what he mentioned. I’m not saying either statement is true but it’s likely the case people already own those teslas and their next car will not be.

edit_why_downvotes 2025-02-07 19:34

Was December & January when all plants were shut down as they re-tooled for refreshing the the car that contributes to the majority of their sales and is the #1 selling car in the world?

> other stuff Small things, like " **all** their model Y production lines being down while they release a new version"

nugitsdi 2025-02-07 19:43

This is about a month old sales, I bet that counts for a very small percentage of the cars you're seeing ;)

PumperNikel0 2025-02-07 19:44

Are all cars skins?

sunny_tomato_farm 2025-02-07 19:45

I have a Y and will hold on for as long as possible, but for my wife’s next car I’m looking at the R1S.

askingaquestion33 2025-02-07 19:47

Last year there were incentives like no interest rates. Now we’re not getting any incentives… do they just not care about less sales?

CaravanShaker83 2025-02-07 19:52

It’s definitely brand damage or a combination of both. There is no way what he has done hasn’t damaged the brand.

I'm pretty sure this is going to happen in the US as well. We have a 2018 3 and a 2021 Y. We convinced my sister to get a Y in 2023 and we convinced my parents in December a few months ago to get a Lyriq instead. We were eyeing the new Y but due to bad publicity we're now considering a RAV4 Hybrid or Lyriq now. Bad publicity is pretty difficult to undo quickly. And it doesn't seem like he's interesting in doing that. Tesla board needs to get rid of him otherwise the sales will continue to tank everywhere

Alexhale 2025-02-07 20:39

I would be surprised if he really cares all THAT much. Like he probably doesnt think its a good thing but I am sure he anticipated this.

whiteknives 2025-02-07 20:44

This is the source of his data. https://eu-evs.com/bestSellers/ALL_HIGH_DQ/Brands/LatestDate I presume the chart shown is from the premium service, but you can make one on your own by scraping the raw data they provide for free.

Flipslips 2025-02-07 22:01

I’ve been hearing that for like a decade lmfao

Art_Vandalay_1 2025-02-07 22:02

This was actually the second best January ever for Tesla in Norway, a 130% increase of the average for the last 8 years. Of course, that would never make it into a headline. Tesla ships cars mostly in batches by the end of quarters. There are frequent months with almost zero deliveries, January is frequently one of those months. So these statistics, based on a single month are absolutely meaningless.

Flipslips 2025-02-07 22:03

Dead internet theory

Art_Vandalay_1 2025-02-07 22:05

It was also the second best January ever for Tesla. 600% increase from 2023, 1500% increase from 2022.

[deleted] 2025-02-07 22:37

[deleted]

ipcmlr 2025-02-07 22:46

chart is totally misleading. [https://x.com/ICannot\_Enough/status/1887892203730555260](https://x.com/ICannot_Enough/status/1887892203730555260) according to poster "The 2025 “crash” is just because there’s only one month of data so far in 2025, compared against 12 months of data in all previous years. January sales are low due to seasonality (for all automakers), low December ending inventory levels for Tesla, and Giga Berlin stopping production to retool the line to make the newly refreshed Model Y (the only model that factory makes)."

electricshadow 2025-02-07 23:07

Tesla Canada has this promotion going on currently on their website: "Promotional rate available for well-qualified buyers with excellent credit who order a new Model 3 between February 6, 2025 and March 7, 2025 and take delivery before April 1, 2025. 0.99% APR for terms up to 48 months, 1.99% APR for terms up to 72 months, 2.99% for 84 months and 3.49% for 96 months." I wouldn't be surprised if they start doing price cuts by the Spring at this rate.

tomcmackay 2025-02-07 23:14

A slump? This is 10x consumers, per entity, who can't buy their UberTrucjen, because it slices pedestrians to little bitty bits in confrontations. So yeah...50 consumers thwarted

jwrig 2025-02-07 23:23

Is this trend just with tesla or all ev sales. Is gm, Ford, Volvo and others that sell in Canada increasing or decreasing at similar rates?

terran1212 2025-02-08 04:54

I wonder why

[deleted] 2025-02-08 05:08

120,000 employees? Yeesh. Wasteful spending. The vast majority of them could probably be laid off. Needs to slash the company to the bone to save on costs. What works for the US federal government, can work for Tesla too.

Yarafsm 2025-02-08 05:20

Lolz..try standup seriously

tannerge 2025-02-08 05:24

So you aren't worried at all about the top posts on the front page saying we will never buy a Tesla again ?

doug4630 2025-02-08 05:41

This is the sort of twisting facts and flim-flamming American politicians do. Most (large?) companies compare their sales from one month to the SAME month the previous year. Comparing this January to the AVERAGE of the previous 8 bears little resemblance to how companies evaluate how things are going. Not only that, but THIS January is a January like no other. Make of it what you will George. LOL

twinbee 2025-02-08 05:45

> Tesla board needs to get rid of him otherwise the sales will continue to tank everywhere No, he is worth far more to the company than he is gone. Almost every decision he makes turns out to be the right one. Optimus and FSD will help Tesla grow by a further 10x. You're probably not a shareholder, but I am.

twinbee 2025-02-08 05:50

You're on reddit which swings overwhelmingly left if not far left, so the apparent public sentiment is not the real one.

twinbee 2025-02-08 05:52

twinbee 2025-02-08 05:56

Good luck getting someone with the same vision, such as creating Optimus which will be an insane money spinner.

Present-Ad-9598 2025-02-08 06:20

Nope! It’s a trillion dollar company that outsold Audi, there’s way more people buying Teslas for the first time than those saying they won’t. It’s a fad, I’m confident in a few years no one will care

Zealousideal_Aside96 2025-02-08 07:10

BikebutnotBeast 2025-02-08 07:13

Zealousideal_Aside96 2025-02-08 07:15

> This was actually the second best January ever for Tesla in Norway, a 130% increase of the average for the last 8 years. Of course, that would never make it into a headline. It would never make it to a headline because it’s such a stupid statistic. 8 years ago there was no model 3/Y and Tesla was still a baby automaker. Ford is also probably doing better this month compared to 100 years ago but that won’t make the headlines either.

[deleted] 2025-02-08 07:19

In the history of promises, not one has been delivered remotely on time, or even close to his promised scope. "Full driving autopilot", the roadster, 500 mile range cybertruck released in 2021. And there are all promises on cars, which is something in his wheelhouse. Robotics? Lol. The market keeps buying his fake promises to the tune of 177 P/E. That bill will eventually come due.

Max-Normal-88 2025-02-08 07:28

Most of us don’t want electric cars honestly. Diesel is still the best around

Mayotte 2025-02-08 07:49

KymbboSlice 2025-02-08 09:33

If you have a place to charge the car at home, electric is an absolute no brainer and there is no contest at all. I wake up with a full tank every morning for half the cost of gasoline or diesel and I never have to go to gas stations or even think about refueling. If you don’t have a garage at your home, such as a downtown apartment, then you’re right; EVs lose their main perk. Otherwise, I think it’s overwhelmingly obvious that an electric car is the way, and I won’t even consider a gasoline or diesel car for my next car because I have a garage.

_Smashbrother_ 2025-02-08 12:44

\> we convinced my parents in December a few months ago to get a Lyriq Kind of a bad time to be buying an EV with a dying charging connector

casino_r0yale 2025-02-09 05:19

Tesla has always been supply-limited. If they weren't, you'd be seeing them cutting into their 30%+ margins with discounts like they sometimes do during end of quarter sales pushes

ColdAsHeaven 2025-02-09 05:20

Not really. They gave us a free adapter + 12 months of free charging. It's been fantastic, they love it

linklitter 2025-02-09 05:49

Good thing they’re not a car company

xlynx 2025-02-09 06:08

You're right nobody will care because they'll be happy with their BYD.

xlynx 2025-02-09 06:12

Just get a normal Tesla. It won't attract all the negative attention that the cybertruck now does.

Also other brands have been catching up FAST, a few years ago Tesla was far more ahead efficiency-wise

NevrForvr 2025-02-09 17:35

So now Tesla produces cars in batches like muffins? Car factories are like oil refineries - every minute the factory is running, finished cars are coming out. Or are you saying Tesla holds them back until the end of the quarter so they can sell them at a margin-killing discount?

justadubliner 2025-02-09 19:53

Google "Tesla sales collapse" for multiple reporting from everywhere from The Financial Times to car specific media. Every single large market in Europe and Australia saw a crazy drop in Tesla sales in January. Even China is starting to see a decline and I didn't expect that. I did with the others.

justadubliner 2025-02-09 19:57

You don't need a garage. Just an offroad house adjacent parking spot. In fact for safety I wouldn't put an ev in an attached garage.

justadubliner 2025-02-09 20:01

Just Tesla.

jwrig 2025-02-09 20:07

Fords ev business is down 39% in 2024 Stellantis ev sales is down 15% in 2024 VW down 4% BMW, GM, and Volvo ev business had increases. So no, it wasn't just tesla.

USAID will buy them for third world countries

twinbee 2025-02-10 02:36

So if you're so confident, why don't you short them? We all know why.

Vattaa 2025-02-10 13:12

Yoke, getting rid of lidar, getting rid of USS, getting rid of indicator stalks, firing the whole supercharger team, and building whatever the Cybertruck is for only the NA market rather than a small hatchback that the world is screaming out for. "FSD" that is always one year away. Yea great moves.

Vattaa 2025-02-10 13:13

Also known as lying.

Vattaa 2025-02-10 13:15

Chinese cars at the same price point are better.

Vattaa 2025-02-10 13:16

Its basically the same as the "old" Model Y, they could just drive that and it will be a near identical experience.

Vattaa 2025-02-10 13:18

Why do you care how sales go?

twinbee 2025-02-10 13:37

All small fry other than FSD, where Tesla leads the competition by miles. They don't have to be perfect or quick with FSD, just sooner to market than everyone else.

twinbee 2025-02-10 13:38

No lying implies intentional deceit. Being naive or optimistic is not the same.

Vattaa 2025-02-10 14:06

Ill use that one the next time I'm home late from the pub. "I intended to be home in time for dinner at 19:00 but I accidentally stayed out until 00:00 as I met some old mates" Will see how that goes down with the wife. Some things he has said are just complete flat out lies. Like when he said owning a Tesla is owning an appreciating asset.

greyscales 2025-02-10 14:33

What do you mean? Teslas automotive gross margin has been declining every single quarter since Q1 22 where it was 29.1%. They are now down to 16%. They also have been producing more than they are delivering for a while now.

[deleted] 2025-02-10 15:01

I'm curious to see how the lack of sales will (or will not) impact the stock price. This is a company that hasn't profited much yet its stock remains high.

Vattaa 2025-02-10 15:08

Thats typically how "tech" companies go.

[deleted] 2025-02-10 16:32

Are you a bot?

casino_r0yale 2025-02-10 18:35

Look at the gross margin of their competitors in the auto industry. Car manufacturing has always been an extraction racket between the manufacturers and the dealers with razor thin margins, Tesla has more Apple-like margins until recently. They’re not gonna sit on inventory, they’ll just cut prices like they did last time. They have room to cut; big auto is selling at a loss and subsidizing

twinbee 2025-02-10 18:47

Don't be ridiculous.

[deleted] 2025-02-10 19:27

I’m being completely serious.

[deleted] 2025-02-10 19:45

Yes, I'm aware.

laplasz 2025-02-10 20:38

your are aming to buy a car - so buy a car based on the features - RAV4 Hybrid? going back to a ICE car.. it is not a wise decision at all

ColdAsHeaven 2025-02-10 20:43

"it's not a wise decision at all" Why not? CA has the most expensive electricity in the States. Literally I pay 47 cents per Kilowatt to charge overnight. *That's more expensive than Tesla supercharges* Even using Teslas own gas saving math, it says I don't save any money at all. Not to mention, Toyota makes significantly more reliable cars.

laplasz 2025-02-10 20:48

although Toyota hybrid system is reliable ü Tesla's system is way more better - with a new Y for sure. but good luck with the annoying engine noise.

fgreen68 2025-02-10 21:09

The Lyriq and the Ionic are both great cars.

twinbee 2025-02-10 21:41

No. You're just used to the lefty reddit hive mind.

[deleted] 2025-02-10 22:20

Not really. You can go on r/conservative and see people talking normally. But the way you talk and act is extremely odd. Makes me think you aren’t real. If you’re not a bot, then why are you acting like a bot? You should really think about that.

Nukemind 2025-02-10 22:33

Same as prices have gone up I have found myself borrowing a family members car that gets ~45 mpg. I don't think I will be getting another EV for a while tbh.

greyscales 2025-02-11 15:51

Tesla has worse margins than many other car manufacturers. Kia, Hyundai, Subaru, Stellantis, Mercedes, Toyota, they all have better margins.

a_moniker 2025-02-11 16:05

Because they have released zero proof of any of that? They just keep posting twitter comments about “fraud,” but haven’t actually proven that there is any. If there is actually fraud then they need to be able to rigorously prove it in a court of law.

mazink121294 2025-02-11 16:20

I guess the investors are not falling for Elonhole's hype about 2025 and 2026 will be ballistic.

Sochinz 2025-02-11 17:55

No. But that isn’t what he is doing. He is unilaterally and illegally dismantling entire government agencies. It’s violates separation of powers, the impoundment act, and a whole slew of others things. The courts are finally weighing in with orders for them to stop. He has no idea what he is doing and is simply taking an axe to entire aspects of the federal government. Even if you approved of the results (which you shouldn’t) you should be appalled by the blatantly unconstitutional power grab. You cannot take Elons word on what is waste and what isn’t. He doesn’t even know what he is looking at or the purpose behind things. Source: I’m a lawyer.

McMethHead 2025-02-11 21:52

Tell me what you object to below. I'll wait. In 2008 the for Fed Chair Ben Bernanke testified that a half trillion has gone missing - doesn't know which foreign banks it went to DOGE is investigating federal employees with high net worth despite low pay (Elizabeth warren has a net worth of 12 million while on a government salary of less than 200K) Federal government sent 1.3 Billion to deceased people and the cheques were cashed FEMA sent $59M to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants. The city of New York pays $220 million to rent the entire Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan to house illegal migrants. The hotel is owned by the government of Pakistan -- Meanwhile veterans have their benefits slashed and victims of natural disasters (hurricane, wildfires etc)in US get little to no funding Ludicrous Projects funded with American Tax Dollars A ‘Transgender Opera’ in Colombia A ‘DEI Musical’ in Ireland Serbian ‘DEI’ Project A ‘Transgender Comic Book’ in Peru Technical assistance for the LGBT community during the 2021 Honduras election Grant to Princeton university for a study racial diversity in the middle east and north Africa 9.9 million to create jobs in the carpet and jewelry section for women in Afghanistan 16 Million to China for "energy" projects in China

Nobody elected him and a lot of people don't trust that he is acting in good faith. He was already caught openly lying about multiple examples of what he called "waste and fraud". It is the job of congress to allocate and approve spending. Not some foreigner that the president happens to like.

Tesla have been ditched as an option at my and my wife's work salary sacrifice lease scheme in the uk. Official reasons for both is Tesla is being whooped on price by Mercedes, VW and BMW. She was originally going to order a Tesla, but a BMW i7 was coming in at £100 a month cheaper.

_casshern_ 2025-02-17 23:58

I wish they offered 0.99 on the new model y.

_casshern_ 2025-02-18 00:01

EVs in general. Tesla sales were down 70% in the last month or quarter, BUT EV sales were down 79%. So Tesla actually gained market shares in the EV segment. https://apple.news/AmRVcXknKQUuNWGMI47pa1Q

_casshern_ 2025-02-18 00:02

No. Tesla is actually doing better than other Manufacturers in Canada. Tesla sales were down 70% in the last month of 2024, BUT EV sales were down 79%. So Tesla actually gained market shares in the EV segment. https://apple.news/AmRVcXknKQUuNWGMI47pa1Q

_casshern_ 2025-02-18 00:03

No, actually they dropped less. EVs in general. Tesla sales were down 70% in the last month or quarter, BUT EV sales were down 79%. So Tesla actually gained market shares in the EV segment. https://apple.news/AmRVcXknKQUuNWGMI47pa1Q

justadubliner 2025-02-18 00:40

Assumed it was the same as in Europe and Australia where ev sales are steady but Tesla has dropped severely. Can't see Tesla improving anytime soon in Canada or elsewhere. Even China seems to be stalling for them. And that's before the potential trade war.

Learning_ENGR 2025-02-18 00:57

Why

twinbee 2025-02-18 01:17

Because he's not really confident in his views.

Learning_ENGR 2025-02-18 01:40

I sold all my shares that I’ve been holding since 2015. That’s confidence enough. I’m not going to short it because if you understand how options works, even a good play can go against you. It literally gambling.

Onaliquidrock 2025-02-18 06:57

flaviusUrsus 2025-02-18 15:40

They already tried to get me to go tests drive twice in less than a month. Even though I said I'm not planning on buying a Tesla again after the first message. Also tried twice to reach my wife. They never did that since I bought my first 3 in 2019. Pretty sure the inventory starts to pile up.

Flaky-Character-9383 2025-02-19 11:48

Sometimes sarcasm is hard to spot, but I really hope this was like that. But admittedly your post was a great caricature of what the Muskbots and bootlickers are like here on Reddit nowdays.

lurkANDorganize 2025-03-02 23:08

If they're a share owner...they're going to want to know if their investment is fucked. If you're a car owner, of a car that needs A LOT of technology, you're going to need your car manufacturer to succeed because the level of support required to maintain complex, semi-autonomous technology is back breaking. If the company does VERY poorly over the next ten years we're going to see a LOT of lawsuits as older models will get decommissioned significantly sooner than one would expect.

xlynx 2025-03-21 02:39

It takes some special arrogance to laugh at a competitor that grew 41% while you declined 1% with less than half the deliveries in absolute terms.

Present-Ad-9598 2025-03-21 07:18

To my knowledge BYD isn’t even in the top ten of EV sales in Europe, because they mainly sell to China, whereas Tesla is still at the top
